I've been passing by here and didn't get a chance to check it out until now. Upon entering, I was greeted by a friendly staff. The shop was busier than I thought, with plenty of customers browsing through their selection. They have a plethora of signs and maps on not only posters and boards but also on magnets and even T-shirts! This is one of the coolest stores in Cambridge! As a life long Bostonian I frequent the MBTA lines, so it was so cool seeing it all come to life. I picked up a full view map of the MBTA system for my room and my friend got a few MBTA pictures. One of the most noteworthy components of this store is the service, it is incredible! My friend and I came in 10 minutes before close, unknowingly, but the sales associate and manager helped me find exactly what I was looking for and didn't rush us at all. They also have a real-time tracker of the MBTA trains which is one of the coolest techno gems I've ever seen. If I could, I would buy everything in this store. read more

I love this little map store! It's obviously best for maps of the Boston and Cambridge areas, plus the MBTA specific stuff, but they've actually got a cool collection of maps from all over the place. They also have vintage almanacs and postcards and other assorted collectables for the area. They also have great books on local history. The store isn't that big but there is a ton to go through. I came here on a whim after seeing they sold official MBTA goods, but they also carry a wealth of vintage Boston-area maps and transit ephemera (think old school subway tokens and schedules). When it's becoming increasingly commonplace to reach instinctively for your mobile device when determining your course, plotting your path or locating one landmark in relation to another, a wonderland like Ward Maps is like a shop lined with vinyl in a world of digital downloads. In one small, clean, well-organized space, the folks at Ward can not only tell you where we've come from, but also where we're going. Beyond the obvious draw for map and geography geeks among the many prints and careful reproductions, are coasters, bags, magnets and mugs printed with local neighborhood and city themes. The sole employee there gave me the background on where some different prints came from and was super helpful is pulling down my final purchase decision, which was clearly out-of-reach. A little more than $30 later, I left with a sleek silk-screened print of a modern/pictoral map of NYC for best friend who just moved into her first apartment in Chelsea. Total win. read more

What a fantastic store this is. I was walking around Porter Square one day and my nerdy inhibitions kicked in when I saw a map store. Cambridge can do that to you. Seriously, how lame can someone be that they are so inclined to stroll into a damn map store? Well, no matter how lame it sounds, I am glad I took the leap of faith. This place is stocked with some truly awesome Boston memorabilia. You want a model of a T car? Well, you can get one here. You want a magnet for just about any T stop or landmark in the city of Boston, you can get one. You want some Boston-ish style tote bags, coasters, mugs, or calendars? You can get em. You want a paper wallet that has the T map printed on it? Hell, you can get that too. And if you don't have the gonads to swipe one of those giant T maps from an actual T station while hammered in the middle of the night, you can legally purchase one here. I guess they have some relationship with the MBTA that allows them to get a hold of things like that to sell to the public. Unfortunately, I am not a map expert and cannot speak to the authenticity, quality, and quantity of selection of their maps. What I can tell you is this store has a crap-load of maps from different parts of the world as well as time periods. Their merchandise is worth checking out. If you are looking to grab a nice souvenir for a friend or even your greedy self, do everyone a favor and skip out on the cheesy crap that you will find in the malls and in faneuil hall. Pretty awesome place that sells not only maps, but tons of MBTA related stuff. Besides the usual MBTA goodies like t-shirts, keychains, coin banks, and magnets, if you've got some real cash to burn, you can buy used bus stop signs, signs that used to be in various subway stations around Boston, or roll signs that used to be on old subway/light rail equipment. My personal faves are the MBTA messenger bags, the black and white T trucker hat, and one of several books available about the history of the T. Of course, I would've LOVED to buy the rollsign mechanism from the recently-retired Blue Line subway cars but they were asking for a good chunk of change on that one. They can also make replica signs of most stations in the MBTA system. Parking in the area can be tricky, but I think its definitely worth the trouble if you are a rapid transit or map buff. read more

Gotta say, the stuff here is awesome if you are into transit or maps (or both) - they run the MBTA online gift shop, so the store is full of MBTA-centric gifts from ipad covers, to place-mats, books, train models and subway car ornaments, and actual and reproduction station signage and surplus equipment (dead-man's lever, anyone?) There are also tons of original and reproduction ward maps and maps from around the world. Great stuff, but wow, talk about rude. We spent a good 30 minutes wandering around, looking at items, and not once did the clerk on duty say a thing. Not "Hello, let me know if i can help you", he didn't chime in when we said things like "I wonder what this is" or "is this original" loud enough so he cold hear it. Oh, he did say "thanks for stopping by" as we were halfway out the door. My partner was interested in several things, and might have bought something, but has a pet peeve about not buying from rude salespeople. Heads up to the owners: explain to your staff the importance of being friendly. This place is amazing, unique and a definite find, and would get 5 stars unreservedly if not for the attitude, shyness or whatever it was - if you don't like people, don't work in a shop! --- Followup: in addition to the reply below, Steven followed up with me personally to find out when we came in and reiterated to me he stresses to his staff to greet each customer. I had a great experience here! My boyfriend and I visited WardMaps with the intention of buying a fairly specific map. We wanted a large map of Newton, Massachusetts. One that included our street. Since our street is on the edge of the city limits this proved a bit difficult. The young lady working (unfortunately I forget her name!) was so helpful and informative. Since we couldn't find what we were looking for on display, she showed us their online database. She explained how the database works and what we should search for. They have a large monitor set up in the shop so we were able to do the online search together and with her guidance. She gave us time alone and checked back in on us which was appreciated. In the end we found exactly what we were looking for! We ordered the map to be framed by WardMaps (framing was reasonably priced!) and were told it would be ready within a couple of weeks. We now have the map and it's framed and hanging on our living room wall! WardMaps is a gem! read more

I love maps. I am a map nerd. I'm redecorating my room these days... (here's the part where any mooches out there steal my ideas)... and I've decided that since I've moved around so much and lived in a lot of great places throughout my life, it would be fun to get maps of each spot and put them in some nice frames and decorate my space in a meaningful, classy way. Vintage maps! So I headed to WardMaps. I'd seen these guys at street fairs, but you gotta check out the whole store. Maps galore! I'm not so much into the more gimicky printing options (coasters, mugs, t-shirts, bags) but they make great gift ideas, so keep them in mind for that. However, I'm super into all of their antique original prints and cheaper reprints! The tiny space is chock full of history. I went in feeling perhaps too ambitious, wanting 4 maps, of 4 places close to my heart. My shopping list: 1) Somerville. Specifically, the part I live in (Davis/Porter). This sounds easy, but it's actually very hard to find one from the 19th century (most of the maps are from around 1900 or so) that have my neighborhood on it. In that regard, you Union Square kids have it way easier. But in the end, after some serious digging, I found a great map of the 'hood, from way before it was much of a 'hood at all. 2) Westport, MA: My family's hometown, and my current home away from home. I was thrilled to find a gorgeous 1895 map (coincidentally, the year my family's house was built) that not only includes roads and waterways, but also the names of all the original property owners, which is super fun. My mom is gonna go nuts over this! (Bonus: The owner, Brian, assured me that they have at least one map of every town in Massachusetts.) 3) Philadelphia, PA: My actual hometown. I wanted one of the whole city, but instead could only find ones of specific neighborhoods. I'll hold off buying this one, but it's cool. It's a big city. ;-) 4) Eugene, OR: If you're not confused yet, this is also kind of my hometown, at least in a sentimental soul-connection kind of sense. Anyhoo, no luck here-- not a thing from Eugene to be found. Sad face. Overall I was incredibly impressed by the vast selection of maps and styles (bird's eye views, street views, ones that focus on properties, ones that focus on streets, others that focus on landscapes), and how helpful Brian was. The poor guy spent about an hour helping me out on my very ambitious mission, and was willing to go above and beyond to make me happy. For example, things he didn't have available in the store, he could have printed for me (in 1-3 business days) from their massive database. So I ended up with 2 amazing prints, which were on sale, so I got a Medium size of one and an "Intermediate" size (larger than medium, smaller, than Large) of another, all for like $90. The real deal authentic big guys usually run around $300. They also offer framing services, and Brian even offered to make me a custom matte for my prints for only like $10 extra, even though I'm too cheap to buy a frame from him. I think that's super sweet. So if you're a map nerd like me, need a quirky and unique gift idea, or are just redecorating, come check this spot out! read more

I am a lover of old maps, historical New England anything, and Boston, so this store was an amazing find. I felt like I was dreaming as I walked in - I mean, they have been here since November 2007 and I didn't know it!! And I live almost right down the street! (in a matter of speaking....right down Mass Ave...) Antique maps are a given; it's what the store's named after. They not only have maps of New England but old maps from all over the world -I spotted a bunch of European and South American maps in their collection. The original prints are pricy (the ones I was looking at were at least $175) but if you want to buy a reprint, those are actually quite affordable, from $19 up. Their website wardmaps.com has a complete listing of their entire collection, but you get a good idea of what they offer when you walk in the store. And they not only sell maps and reprints, but you can get maps on bags, t-shirts, mugs and more...why settle for a 1890 map of Cambridge when you can get a 1890 map of Cambridge on a messenger bag??!? (don't answer that) That's only half the store. As someone who loves Boston paraphenalia but doesn't want to spend $50 on a giant stuffed lobster or salt water taffy along with all the other tourists, this was almost as good as the map section. Coasters, mousepads, journals, placemats, with awesome Boston graphics like T stop signs, the Fresh Killed Poultry sign from that meat market by Lechmere, street graffiti, etc. I ended up buying four coasters emblazoned with photographs of Davis, Porter, Harvard, and Park Street T stops. They've got a mailing list sign up by the register if you want to put your email on and get notified if they get in any old maps of areas you're interested in. Their oldest map of New Bedford/South Coast is from 1879, but I'm hoping they'll have some great find sometime soon and I can get me a map of New Bedford from 1841. I'm really disappointed with WardMaps. I've bought a lot of maps and gifts there, but on my most recent trip, the staff was unhelpful and spiteful. After making my purchase (a map, cardboard backing, in a mylar sleeve) I asked for "a bag or something" since I was going to be walking down Mass Ave to the next T-stop. The cashier looked at me and said "the mylar sleeve should protect it." And I was so flabbergasted, I turned and walked out. I walked down Mass Ave in 20mph winds for a little bit, but it was clear that I REALLY NEEDED A BAG OR SOMETHING, since this map was going to slip out of my gloves or crease/tear/bend in the whipping wind. Halfway to my destination I stopped and turned around, went back and asked to return the map, citing I couldn't carry it home like this. The employee asked "Would you like a tube?" Are you kidding me? Where was that offer when I made my purchase 20 minutes ago, and asked for something to carry my map in? I declined, the proprietor informed me they didn't do refunds, but opened the drawer and handed me cash. He wanted me out of there. This was too frustrating for him apparently. All this. I'm not sure if this is the most accurate business name in the history of accurate business names, or the most misleading business name in the history of misleading business names. WardMaps is full of stuff. Just not all maps. Yes, maps are on everything, but it isn't just maps. You've got shirts and baby onesies, magnets and signs, iPhone covers and toy trains. Basically, its a collection of awesome stuff you'll be happy to give as a gift to someone. Of course, they also have maps of Boston, the MBTA, other cities, books about maps, books about cities, books about trains and more maps. Classic maps, current maps, foreign maps, photographed maps, hand-drawn maps, printed maps and even painted maps. It's worth a visit, even if nothing but to thumb through some beautiful old maps. read more

WardMaps is a very small, unique and niche store which, as you might have guessed it by it's name sells maps. And various other street and MBTA memorabilia as well. From mugs, magnets and t-shirts to small and larger maps, they'll have you covered and they can also custom-print specific maps from their online (and offline) databases as well which can make for some very unique and interesting presents. The friendly and helpful staff will assist you as you geek out and can also answer any of your questions as well as give you quotes for miscellaneous jobs that they can provide. All in all, I've had good experiences there and love to walk and peruse their selection and geek out. As far as the location and convenience, the store is located right on Massachusetts avenue, outside of Porter Square and almost in between Porter and Harvard. It's a pretty convenient location however finding parking in the area can be tricky. read more

Walk just past Grafton Street to find this awesome vintage map/Boston journal/coaster/shirt shop. Two brothers decided to set-up shop after successfully selling their products in booths at events all around the city! Ward Maps ( http://www.wardmaps.com) has vintage maps of Boston from way back when and down to the smallest details like what families owned each buildings! Then Brian, the other brother runs Boston Coasters (http://www.bostoncoasters.com) that puts awesome pictures of Boston on messenger bags, journals, coasters, shirts, journals, you name it! They even do custom orders of images you want, or they can take an image you already liked on a journal and make it into coasters etc. Its a great place to get a gift for someone who is INTO Boston because none of the stuff here feels like "tourist crap". I just picked up 3 great journals with images on the cover for my interns as gifts. One with a vintage map of the Back Bay, one with some old t-passes and one with the a old painting of the Charles Bridge. Its cool because they have grittier images like t-stops etc. and from all different neighborhoods across Boston. And for those who love other cities, they have a small selection of other locals like Rhode Island, San Francisco, etc. read more

I had asked on the yelp boards about cool Boston gifts and someone suggested vintage maps, which made me remember this place which I had mentally bookmarked in my many sojourns to Berry Line but as yet had never gone in. Today was the day, and I'm pleased to say this place gets the highest praise I know how to bestow: wicked awesome. You may not have even realized you had a hankering for vintage maps, but believe me once you've been in this little spot you will. There are maps on: --prints --coasters --mousepads --bags of various sizes --tee shirts --greeting cards --serving trays --mugs --placemats --postcards On these same items you can also find some modern artwork and cool photos of modern Boston with T-stops and the like. The store is very small but I didn't feel like the cashier guy was staring at me to make sure I wasn't stealing something. He was very cool - playing Bjork and letting me browse in peace. Because this shop's hours are either 12-6 or "on occasion," student teaching, grad school, and Quasar practice have kept me from visiting to check out the maps, prints, coasters, shirts and baby onesies inside. I'd also been avoiding the area to avoid the Berryline temptation--I haven't been running too much lately and want to reach my 25 minutes / 8:30 pace goal so that I can go back for some froyo! Today's gorgeous weather inspired me to run down to the Esplanade and I happened to pass WardMaps.com's storefront on the way down. Intrigued, I decided to make a visit my reward for running for 30 minutes. 36:01 later, I stopped at the Weeks footbridge and scampered up DeWolfe St to 12 Bow St to check out WardMaps.com's sweet offerings. I hadn't put any money in my pocket before heading out, but I am definitely heading back to check out the Live Poultry Fresh Killed mug, the journals, and the metal prints. They can put antique maps or Boston-related photos onto metal prints, and the final effect looks really cool. I'm coveting the pictures of T signs the most. The owners are very friendly--Brian gave me some good ideas for making a tiled set of metal prints for a living room wall. The bags, shirts, and onesies are fairly cute--if there were clutches or more vintage-y looking shirts with softer fabric, I'd be coveting them too. read more

Insert "panicked Professor Frink noise" here I am going to spend all of my money here if I am not careful. Ward Maps Boston has some of the coolest old photos, maps, MBTA memorabilia and assorted old Boston randomness you'll ever find under one roof. Their selection of old photos is huge, and most are matted for framing already. They offer in-house framing for their larger maps and photos, and will do so for a reasonable price. Many of the photographs are indexed by town, as are the maps, so if you're looking for that 1885 photo of Bricka Square, you might just find it. The actual MBTA artifacts are pricey, but for original memorabilia from the nation's oldest public transportation system, you'd expect that. They also sell reproductions of any MBTA station sign, so you can hang an actual CHINATOWN sign on your wall and have it look legit. For real though. I am going to need a locator bracelet on myself, and I'm going to give the receiver to you. If it starts beeping, that means I'm at Ward Maps again spending all my money, and you should press the big red button to deliver a shock to my ankle. read more

The stuff here is incredible. The staff is incredible, too. (As in: "Hi, WardMaps, do you guys have any cool photos of South Station?" "Yes. We have this cool photo. [Shows me photo.] Also, we had been thinking about sending some of our guys out to take more photos of South Station... since you asked, I'll send them out tomorrow morning." Dude.) Also, they have photos of Fenway which are nearly as amazing as actually going to a game there. (The one of the sign pointing to the Green Monster seats, where the paint is chipped so you can see the red brick peeking through the green sign? The one of them repainting the Dunkin Donuts sign in Japanese for Dice-K's debut? Holy moly.) Oh, and don't even get me started about how these guys make the T seem cinematic and romantic. This place is awesome. They have a bunch of antique maps and reproduction maps organized by geographical area. As expected they have tons of Boston area maps, but they have maps of everywhere else as well (though just not as many). I got an antique 1897 map of Arizona that I'm pretty excited about. If it's Boston area antique maps you're looking for the possibilities are endless, all types of maps at all scales. I also got a cute coaster with an old Boston map printed on it. WardMaps, I am on to your plan to suck my bank account dry! Not only have they steadily expanded their map & map-related gift offerings, but now that they're in a larger shop in Porter Square, they are offering full antique atlases and, most recently, reproductions of vintage posters. It often feels like someone created a store just for me. I first started patronizing them when they were solely selling their antique maps & reproductions at area fairs. I often spend an hour or two looking through the maps at their shops (two now, the new one in Porter and their previously-only store in Harvard) and they've always been content to let me look on my own if I tell them I don't need any help, but have also answered my questions very thoroughly when I did have some. They will also put an entire antique atlas on a CD-ROM for you, viewable by Adobe Acrobat (the CD images are locked to prevent copying). If you know exactly what you want, you can also place an order via their website and then pick it up in the shop. [By the way, here's a tip from an antique atlas & map lover: Now that authentic antique maps are so, so expensive (regularly around $100-200 both here and elsewhere, frequently more for rarer ones), if you want more than one or two maps from the same atlas, it's often as cheap or cheaper to just buy the entire atlas. Not to mention that looking through an entire antique atlas is a fascinating glimpse into a bygone world, nor that you can feel like a book-saving superhero about preserving the atlas instead of having it torn up to be sold as individual maps.] read more

I have a lot of period maps from there and they have a great local area selection so you can usually find your neighborhood! yespls. I'll say this up front: I'm a sucker for stupid kitschy shit that has no use value whatsoever. However, I'm also moving into a point in my life that I like to not be embarrassed by showing people my living room, and trying to that end to phase out items like my extensive "Vegetables in a Can" marketing materials in favor of, well, classier decor. WardMaps is one of those stores where I walk in and just want everything I can see. 1895 map of Davis Square? In the bag. Awesome coasters featuring Boston landmarks? Yup. Limited-edition artists' t-shirts? Why not? Clearly what will keep this shop in business is the occasional sale of their incredibly expensive antique maps to savvy collectors. I imagine most of you, however, will be less interested in the $1,000 one-of-a-kind antiques, and more interested in the still-awesome reproductions. $30 for an informative piece of attractive wall art is very affordable, especially for an expat like me looking to bring a little bit of home to another city. And for you expats from elsewhere (or foreign sympathizers), there's a smaller-but-still-substantial selection of maps from greater New England, greater America, and around the world -- especially cities that have already been heavily monetized (see: New York, Paris, Tokyo). In conclusion, if you're reading this and trying to figure out what to get me for Christmas, the 1905 print of Somerville Ward 6 is the answer. read more

I wasn't a map nerd. But then I stumbled in to Ward Maps. Everything about this place is perfect for someone looking to give his or her apartment a local, polished-but-not-pretentious feel. Want a century-old ward map of your block, showing that your neighbor's house used to be a Sisters of the Poor building? It's there. Want a "Future of the MBTA" map showing what the T could someday look like if it ever got its act together? Done. Add to that the kitschy collectibles - tote bags with silkscreened photos of local graffiti, coasters with Boston-area photos, actual T station signs - stick it all under a tiny roof with one usually-helpful employee, and you've got a great space to kill a half hour (and half your bank account). read more

By FAR one of the coolest shops in the Boston area. They have all sorts of awesome pictures and maps. Really unique stuff - most of which I haven't seen elsewhere. Staff is very helpful and open to just about any questions or ideas. They've just recently added a ton of MBTA/T gifts and have everything under the sun. I dig the original Green Line signs - only about $500, though. There is a bunch of stuff that is reasonably priced and some other items that are out of reach. BUT what you will find here is a really unique collection of Boston memorabilia that people who live here or people who are just visiting will like. I'd put it on my "must visit" list if you were you. As an aside, they also carry maps from OrkPosters.com which few shops in the area carry. Nice touch. read more

Very impressive shop. Maps and trains have always been of interest to me, so I'm clearly predisposed to places like this, but Ward Maps was about what I was expecting and then some. I was unfortunately pressed for time when I visited, but I thoroughly enjoyed perusing the vintage road maps and assorted collection of MBTA history over the years. I would definitely like to make a return trip sometime when I am back in the area, as I feel I could spend hours in here looking over their maps from all over the country and world. I just visited the store for the first time today, curious to see if they would have an actual useable map of Boston - I was so glad to find that they did! They had the Jimapco Boston Quickmap (http://www.jimapco.com/shop/boston-quickmap/). I've been searching for something that was modern and actually practical for a long time. Their other maps are, of course, antique and beautiful, and they also have lots of novelty items that would be perfect for gifts - MBTA coasters, printouts, station signs, magnets, mugs, bags, antique MTA coins, and even books for kids about taking the MBTA. I also didn't know the name of the map I wanted to purchase, I only had a few pictures of examples we had seen in a restaurant to go off of. They are also what make me work two jobs, but adorning my walls with antique maps of French towns and prints of old maps of my zip code make it totally worth it. The two women in the store are simply beyond helpful and generous. We've bought maps at the store a number of times. Even when it's obvious that you won't be purchasing anything on that visit, they're patient, helpful and willing to spend time. A pleasure to stop in and browse. read more

For the map-obsessed, the MBTA-obsessed, or the Boston history-obsessed (or for those showing symptoms of all three obsessions) this place is pure heaven. Like, they could charge a cover and people would still come here kind of heaven. I came in to grab a T station magnet for my friend's birthday, but gave myself plenty of time to browse...and I needed it. I thought I'd be most interested by the T memorabilia, of which there was plenty (including real, old station signs that cost some serious dough, along with new, more affordable MBTA-licensed memorabilia like magnets, mugs, toy trolleys, shirts, etc.), but the old maps were the most interesting. They have a healthy collection of vintage maps from Boston, Somerville, and Cambridge, along with maps of locations all over the country and world. So. Effing. Cool. The vintage maps are pricey, but they'd make an awesome gift for a map-lover or just an extremely awesome conversation piece if you've got some dollars to spare. They also have a really great vintage postcard collection--mostly from the Boston area, but also from other cities, like Paris--and a small but mighty selection of transit-related books. Lastly-- I really appreciate the super knowledgeable and passionate staff. These people love working here (I can't blame them), and it shows! read more

Very cool store. Full of coasters and mousepads and tote bags with maps, if you're not looking to decorate your wall. I think their specialty is local areas, but they also have world maps, too. I could spend an hour in this small store just looking at everything. Definitely worth a peek, and makes great gifts for any map/travel enthusiast! read more
