Spent $120 on balloons for my sons third birthday. Picked up yesterday at 5 pm while it was raining. The man refused to put balloons in a bag for me and told me they wouldn't get damaged. The first picture is what they looked like when they got home. The second picture is what they look like this morning for my sons birthday after I cut off the deflated ones. I wanted to support a small business instead of Party city- but do not go here. They are rude and unhelpful and a rip off. read more

I came here looking for confetti, and it's awesome to know a store like this exists on the UWS. They had the confetti -- in fact, it was tons of different types of confetti. Don't narrow your eyes to just be cards and party supplies, take a deeper look and see the interesting and amusing variety of stationery, costumes, toys, and other little knickknacks that this store has! Adults, kids, everyone of all ages should be able to find something interesting here. Be sure to look properly! There's a cute section of Halloween & other costume accessories, two small stationery stationery sections (one with notebooks and other small writing pads; the other with pens, markers, and some pencils) As a lover and expert on stationery (not Staples, but various other brands of stationery) I was pleased to find Pentel Arts glitter pens, Marvy & LePen markers, and other interesting writing tools. Within the aisle of stationery are miniatures/little statues and other toys. Toy cars, a big and cute wind-up chick and other wind-up animals, and other little things that kids would enjoy. Miniature decorations that look hand-painted or carefully constructed include a piano, cats in a lying pose, and more. The guy at the cashier was soft-spoken and respectful when I paid. However, the attractiveness of a place lies not in the service when there are many things that overshadow it! Figured I'd surprise my wife with balloons on her birthday. Balloons! Where do you even get proper helium balloons in Manhattan? Here, apparently. I checked the hours... Great they close at 9:00! Checked my watch... 7:30. Plenty of time to hoof it (I'm woefully far from a subway stop, so I do a lot of walking). So I head that way, whistling to myself; filled with thoughts of a happy wife with balloons on her birthday. I arrive 30 minutes later to a locked door and the lights off... one hour before the sign posted on their door claimed they closed. The 30 minute return trip had decidedly less whistling. read more

I was under "high stress' as I was on my way to my brother's funeral up the street at the RIVERSIDE and I stopped in to buy a Guest Book: Ken could not have been MORE HELPFUL, SYMPATHETIC or UNDERSTANDING. He went out of his way to find the appropriate book (which was priced reasonably)and really said 'all the right things' which not only brought me comfort but I will always remember! THANK YOU KEN! It's crazy packed with the cards for this moments events AND they even have a Spanish section for your Abuelita AND a French section for your Mon Ami. Seriously, if you can't find it here you are just making it up. The only con is that there are too many choices. I took up to 30 minutes to get this year's Mother's Day cards. Forget little high end Papyrus or very low end Duane Reade. If you are near Paper House get your Festivus Card, a Statue of Liberty novelty headpiece and a coconut bra! read more

Contrary to what you would believe, this place does not actually sell that much paper. They have a ton of cards and seasonal stationery, plus a whole section of things I would classify halfway between trinkets and tchotchkes. While I don't know why anyone would want to buy these normally, they were great for the advent calendar I was doing with my friends. There's a little section in the back for mini-boxes of various sizes, one section in the front for confetti, another side for seasonal things (they were on Valentine's and St. Patrick's Day last time I was in there), and some random party/gift supplies like ribbon and balloons in the back. It's not full-blown enough to be called a party store, but it's not just a stationery/card store either. Most items are pretty well-priced, and you'll probably find something you need if you just wander through the place. The aisles are pretty narrow. read more

I'm giving Paper House 5 stars because it had exactly what I was looking for all week: adorable and pretty party supplies and goodies for my baby's 1st birthday. I searched everywhere for appropriate "1st birthday" paper plates, napkins, dishes, and decorations. No one -- not Albee Baby, CVS, or grocery stores -- had any full sets of party supplies. And, even though Paper House is a small store, it had everything I wanted, and more. I even had options. Dora the Explorer, thr Backyardigans, Sesame Street. I love the paper house, you know why? Because in July you can buy halloween costumes, including grass skirts, coconut bra's and lei's a plenty. You can also get harry potter plates and napkins, stickers with your name on them, pirate patches, kazoos, fake tattoo's, pinata's and handcuffs. I absolutely did buy all of that stuff there for one outrageous party and I have to thank the paper house for stocking all of that and much much more at reasonable prices and within walking distance to my apartment. They rationalized their price by saying there's a price for the balloon, and a price for filling it. In addition to being pricey, they also stand out in their pricing structure. Everytime I come back to New York for a visit I get postcards and little silly gadgets at this store. Why here? Well, because I am absolutely in love with the Upper West Side and because they always have the funniest cards and I always find the right one for every person and occasion. They also have all sorts of party planning stuff and you can find pretty much anything, even if it is not seasonal yet. If you need to wrap a gift and make it look amazing, you will find what you need here. The staff are usually helpful although you will find someone having a bad day every so often, just like anywhere else... I must have sent hundreds of cards I purchased in this store: birthdays, baby showers, weddings, divorces, thank you cards, you name it! Best card selection I've ever seen!! This is a great place for helium balloons. The only place on the UWS I could find where you can buy balloons and they inflate them with a helium tank and attach ribbons. I think they charge about $1 per balloon, so if you just need 1 or 2 dozen, this is much less expensive than having balloons delivered. And you get to choose the exact balloons you want. As mentioned in the other reviews, they also have an extensive selection of party supplies, costumes, and greeting cards. Lots of kid-themed party supplies like Dora, Thomas, Mickey Mouse, etc. AFAIK, this is the only store on the UWS with a full array of party supplies. But like most things in Manhattan, you pay extra for the convenience. The service is a little gruff, but fine. Things are very packed-in here and the aisles are narrow, so not a great place for strollers or grabby kids. read more

I know this is the UWS but this is highway robbery!!! They've got all the cute sh*tty party favors you want, but for a small fortune. I live right near this store and end up shopping there often but I always walk out with a bit of buyer's remorse... On the positive side, the store has a very large selection of cards, small toys, craft items, birthday party paper goods and odds and ends and they do a great job carrying seasonal-holiday items for all seasons and all holidays. On the bad side, just about everything is overpriced, other than the balloons. I can't leave that store spending less than 40 bucks--of course I always seem to go when I'm desperate and need a last minute item plus they have great hours, open early and close late..... The paper goods in particular are soooo pricey. 12 plates for 7 dollars... what??? But I need' em so I buy them. Also, the staff is not that professional.
