Now if you are in the market for stationary and cards and planners and Moleskine Classic Notebooks .... you have come to the right place. This is their second store, the first having been too small so they moved everything to this new storefront ... and it immediately became too small. There seems to always be a line outside ... especially on weekends ... but they have staff controlling entry to keep it from getting crazy-crowded inside. Interest in stationary/paper/notebooks seem to have had a resurgence lately ... and Paper and Pencil leads the way. If you are journaling ... you'll find just about everything you need in this one store. Pens, paper (and yes, pencils), note cards, stickers, journals, washi tape, folders, and on and on. Staff were routinely friendly and helpful. Now while it is a bit expensive in here for some items, you just can't replicate the pleasure of see/feel/touch, rather than ordering over Amazon. Great selection of stationary goods, both local and otherwise, packed carefully into a wee little store. I was looking for a very specific size and type of planner for the new year, and an employee was very kind and assisted me in finding it. For an imported product, it was very reasonably priced! Paper and Pencil also sponsored (hosted? co-hosted?) the Chicago Stationary Fest, a lovely hobbyist event that brought together a bunch of stationary artists/brands. Super cute stationery store!! Queer owned and very active on social media and keeps ya updated on what new stock they! They are super kind in the store. Very helpful and they make conversation with you about your purchase. Honestly I love it because I'm a huge paper fan so I'll talk about it for hours! It is a small shop so it gets full fast! It's kinda steamy inside, too. It's a small but mighty shop. I've been a few times. I went for my first traveler's notebook and some inserts. Also when they had the traveler's notebook stamp caravan. I got a pipsticks sticker book, some tombow glue tape refills, washi, and sticker sheets and a die cut sticker. So many goodies! Great addition to the neighborhood and I hope they can branch out to be a bigger shop because I see so much foot traffic that it would be nice and honestly want to see businesses I like expand. read more

I have been wanting to shop here for awhile, but the line to get in is always so long. This time there were only 3 people in line, so of course we waited. The place is very, very small, but packed with stationary, pens, stamps, calendars, notebooks, markers and everything you need to write a letter or card. You could easily spend hours looking at all the items, but knowing there is a line of people waiting to come in , it puts some pressure on the experience. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Well worth the wait. Those of us queued up in front of the building were amused with the various questions offered in our direction: what's going on here? Is there a book signing? Someone famous here? What is worth this wait? It's just a tiny shop, jam packed with goodies you don't see just anywhere. Lots of stuff from Japan--and any stationery lover knows they have the best, most elegant elements for all things that you might do with paper. Be prepared for waiting, be prepared to be very close to lots of people, but also be prepared to think outside the box and look over every nook and cranny. Even tho small in square footage, they have lovingly organized an amazing array of pens, pencils, little journals, notecards, and other things. My faves of the day: a cutting blade from Japan (slices like buttah!), a sleek letter opener that (still cannot figure out how it works, but again, like buttah), and the roll of little stickers the size of old price tags, but with little decorations on them. Love, love, love. Can't wait til their new bigger spot opens. But I bet there will still be a queue around the block! read more

Really cute store with such a huge range of writing utensils, stationary and notebooks. Every item in the shops has been clearly hand selected. I love being able to find different journals or calendars i might jot have seen anywhere else before. The staff is friendly and not overbearing. Whenever i have visited on weekends the store is really packed and sometimes it's hard to browse, especially when you are having to go around people waiting in line. I've been following Paper & Pencil on Instagram since before they opened. Today I had the chance to stop in! It's easy to miss since it's on a side street off of Clark, but that would be an unfortunate miss for you. If you like writing implements, journals, cards, or anything stationary related, you should check out this little shop. They have a wall full of pens of various types. Whimsical cards can be found around the place. I LOVE that they have wax seal stamps (most of which are from Modern Legacy Paper Company). I think I already have several of the ones they had, otherwise I probably would have left with another one. Unfortunately they don't seem to have a lot of sealing wax--but maybe I missed the bulk of it. They also have the wax seals that are stickers if you don't want to use your own stamp and wax. Calendars and organization tools can be found at this shop as well. They have a Snail Mail Club, which piqued my interest immediately because I love to send cards and get the very rare piece of personal mail. The owner told me that they have an evening where folks can gather and, with other fans of postal mail, can work on cards, letters, or whatever they'd like to send. You can bring your own supplies or you can purchase items at their shop (purchase is not required), and they'll provide a few things as well like pens and rubber stamps. I love that they're creating a community at the store, and third space at which people can gather. Check their Instagram for details (or sign up for their newsletter). I have been looking for a Chicago equivalent of Yoseka Stationery in Brooklyn. Paper & Pencil came up in my search and I am so glad I went. I went on Stationery Store Day, which was super fun because there were so many people there. I'm always on the quest for the smallest point gel pen, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the Pilot 0.25mm. There was another customer there on a similar quest, so I was happy that I was able to share this joy with them. I have been wanting the Deco Rush tapes and there was quite a few selections in the store. There were also lots of stickers and stamps. I definitely want to come back. The owners are so friendly. When I was little--something like six presidents ago--every neighborhood had a stationery store where you'd go buy pencils, pens, thank you notecards, stamps, and whatever else you couldn't get from the grocery store. Mom would take me to the grocery store to get 25¢ packs of 300-sheet ruled paper for my Trapper Keeper. Office Depot wasn't around yet. So you depended on the little stationery store, and occasionally you'd want to buy something cool like a fancy fountain pen--if you were feeling like Thomas Jefferson and wanted to write all fancy. There's a little something for everyone here -- calligraphy novices, full blown artists, or just some regular degulars like myself who love a unique greeting cards and funny stickers.
