The baked spaghetti was bland and it seemed like there wasn't enough sauce, my friend's beef ho fun wasn't salty enough (she had to add extra salt). The deep fried tofu was good and so was my black bean chicken ho fun. I would end with recommending their HK tea and coffee *big thumbs up*, its just like how it tastes in HK!

We had read on a post on some other Chinese website that this was a newish place , but i am thinking maybe we are wrong. But then we have driven past here a fair bit over the past months and never seen it....so maybe it is new. Anyway it sure does give the new feel as on entering the place appears spotless , clean as , as if brand spanking new. It was pretty quiet when we came in upon it did soon pick up. The staff gave good service , took order quick enough and the orders came out as soon as possible. As for the food , well for a Cantonese style place in Auckland it " knocked my socks off " so to speak. The best french toast HK style i have tasted outside HK., the baked pork chop ,rice and white sauce i had was totally delicious and though i cannot remember having in HK , it was reminiscent of one i had in a HK style restaurant in Shanghai which i totally crave whenever i go back there. All because it is so good!!! My other half had the All day combo small size which is stewed diced pork belly with rice with a choice of side ( see menu in pictures ) . She chose the chicken pieces. This combo is $10 for the small size or $11 for the large size and if you pay an extra dollar you can get either a soft drink or soup of the day. And i also had the HK style milk tea......delicious!! One of my favourite teas. So overall i gave it a big big thumbs up and can see coming back here again ...and again. Maybe for breakfast next time!!

We were looking for a place to eat on the way out of Auckland. It's been awhile since I've had…read moreMalaysian and I'm always a sucker for a good laksa. A quick search brought up Gu Xiang Malaysian Restaurant. It's in a random small strip mall that also has a few restaurants and a Eastern Fresh grocery store. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around noon) for lunch. The place has plenty of tables and it was about half full. Completely full of Asian clientele. The servers speak Cantonese and English. Service is good here; just catch the waitress attention and you can get refills on your tea and water. The menu is massive; appetizers, noodles, noodle soup, fried rice, nasi lemak, dishes on rice, pork/beef, chicken, tofu, fish (market price), prawns, squid, vegetables (seasonal price) and others. All the meat and vegetable dishes are very pricey. - 2x Roti canai (#116) ($3.00 NZD each) - thought these come with a curry sauce dip but nope. You just get the roti canai. These were greasy but had some sweet tones to it that I wasn't expecting. Order this with the chicken curry ($12.90 NZD) instead. - Loo mai gai (#9) ($5.00 NZD) - this was pretty glutinous and had a thick, sweet oyster like sauce. We were intrigued by the photo of it on the wall. Just average. - Curry laksa with chicken curry (#21A) ($13.90 NZD) - the broth was creamy but not very spicy. I'm pretty picky with my laksa; this was better than I expected it to be. They throw in two types of noodles (thin vermicelli and yellow lo mein), tofu puffs and bean sprouts. Get it! - Seafood noodle (#20C) ($11.80 NZD) - the broth is sweet and tasted like wonton soup broth. You get yellow noodles, mix of seafood, bok choy and bean sprouts. Definitely a Chinese influenced dish. Pretty mediocre, nothing special in my books. - Hainese chicken on rice (#31) ($11.80 NZD) - the chicken was hot and tender. Came with delicious side of rice, a vegetable soup and chili garlic sauce. Simple but satisfying. Stick with the Malaysian dishes. Good portion sizes. 3.5 stars.

Great chicken laksa, very authentic Malaysian food for the soul together with the rest of the menu.read more

Cantonese Chinese noodle restaurant. TOTALLY LEGIT. They have a big menu of noodle soups and (my…read morefavourite) mix noodles but if you're not into noodles they have rice dishes, soups, sides, pancakes too. Another cheap eat in Auckland (YAAAAAY!!! i need these places, such a good break on my wallet) usually it's around $10 per person if you share side dishes and get a bowl of noodles each. Today we ordered: Beef Offal Noodle Soup Soft tender beef offal in a not too heavy beef soup (meaning not TOOOO much MSG, in Chinese restaurants you can't avoid it...really...), chewy pillowly noodles and some actualy vegetables!!! To be honest, i prefer Beef Offal Noodle Soup at other places but my workmate think this one taste more genuine rather than covered in MSG and processed too much? i still like it if i add vinegar and chili sauce and still totally worth the money Pork Ribs Mix Noodles I didn't try this one but my workmates said the spareribs were so tender and tasty and cooked to perfection. The noodles were a tad bland on its own but if eaten with the spareribs then it's perfect. Soup on the side was bland "like peppery water and spring onions" Tomato Beef Mix Noodles This really reminds me of Guangzhou as i always order this in restaurants for a quick meals. Nearly ALL small restaurants have this in rice version in Guangzhou. It is simply a "wet" stirfry of sweet tomatoes, juicy tender beef pieces, and scrambled eggs all served on top of tender soft noodles. The sauce is like a gravy texture and is oh so good however my workmates think otherwise and said its like a Chinese Spaghetti Bolognese haha so true. Maybe im a bit biased on this dish. Bean Curd Salad Best dish of today. Bean curd is the thin layer of "skin" you get when the soy milk is settling. Its a firm yet soft-ish texture as the "skin" is layered on top of each other (if that even makes sense). The sauce is a vinegar, sesame oil "fresh" sort of taste with sprinklings of fresh cucumber and carrots. Definitely a must!! Seaweed Salad One of our favourites! Its similar to the Japanese version but flavour is not that heavy on the MSG. More of a garlicy, vinegar, (some MSG), sesame oil dressing? We always order this at Chinese Restaurants if we have the chance. Other things i recommend you ordering: Chives pancake! very tasty yet crispy; Cold noodles in a chili sesame sauce... its the last one on the first page and its soooooo nice and cheap!!!; Sweet and sour soup is also very very nice here with confirmation from a few of my friends haha The service is good and attentive (i dropped my chopsticks by accident and wasn't even fast enough to beat the waitress, she came and picked it up and got me a clean pair too... and i was sitting right next to the condiments/cutlery .... so nice!). English could be a little bit better but they will understand you enough to feed you, if not... its a good way to practice your Mandarin/Cantonese!!

It has changed since we had been by before, but never gone in, and was now open under new management, name and only just it's 4th day. To celebrate the opening they had decorated the entry with floral arrangements which was a nice touch. Once in the restaurant , one will notice a quite sizable tank for lobster etc, a very clean and tidy interior, a few other ornaments like vases and the unusual one of a grandfather clock....I have never seen one of them before in a chinese restaurant. Something different .....a little strange but for me did not ruin the interior outlook at all. Service was good, with greeting on entering and quickly presented with menu at table. We ordered the Taiwanese soy sauce chicken ( 三杯鸡 ) and the Hong Kong style fried fish ( 避风塘炒鱼 ) . Soup of the day is bought to the table when you first sit down. That's nothing flash, soup with veges and meat bone . Is common to give such soups to patrons in cantonese restaurants. Our food came out , was up to scratch...so much so that we nearly never had to takeaway the left overs. The price is a little high though. But still worth the expense. Chances we would come back

It was only after reading a recent review by Cheap Eats that I remembered how much I used to love it. I had a re-read of the review I wrote back in 2013, "After driving past Royal City Dumpling many times I finally tried last week and I am very glad I did, it will now be my go to restaurant in Auckland for dumplings as they were truly delicious. Their pork and fennel dumplings were particularly amazing. I look forward to going back to try the noodles which also looked great. The owners are friendly and prices very reasonable." Their menu has changed since then. They now have a yum char menu as well as a full dumpling menu and full sized Chinese menu. I have since been back twice in one week which is always a good sign. The first time was to try their yum char menu for dinner. We were excited by all the options and low prices but knew we couldn't order everything this time. We went with the Steamed Coriander and Shrimp Dumplings ($5.30), Deep Fried Squid ($6.50), Deep Fried Spring Rolls ($6.50) and the Stir-fried Chinese Veges ($11.80). This was more than enough for two people. The squid was extremely large for $6.50 and while it was delicious we really needed another 1 or 2 people to help us finish it. The spring rolls were probably my favourite. They were FULL of shrimp and were crispy and delicious. But everything was good. I then went back to get some takeaway dumplings for dinner. Pork and Fennel pan-fried. As Royal Dumpling is across the road from Pak n Save I thought I would pop over while the dumplings were being made. I may have left them for too long as when I got them home they were a bit chewy, luke warm and not that great. This was entirely my fault, I just want to warn people so they are not tempted to do the same. I was a sad dumpling eater that night.
