While I've had my fair share of Chinese food, this was my first time trying Taiwanese cuisine (apart from the odd bubble tea), so I was excited! Perhaps the most attractive feature of My Kitchen is that everything on the menu is under $15 - perfect for the student budget! Their main meals average around $11, and they come with either noodles or a bowl of rice. All the main meals with rice come with three side dishes, soup and fresh fruit (one slice of orange, hah). My Kitchen also serves a variety of Taiwanese snack foods, such as coffin toast (what), oyster omelette, and fried pork buns. Their menu is extensive, but everything on the menu is accompanied by an image so you know what to expect. We decided to give one of the snack foods a go, so we tried the Rice Tube Pudding ($5.90), which was alright. I have to admit that this sounds pretty dodgy but it is very similar to the Chinese "zongzi" (savoury glutinous rice cake). As to the main dishes, we ordered the Kung Pao Chicken on Rice ($11.90), Spicy Beef on Rice ($11.90) and Braised Pork Belly on Noodles ($11.90). All of us agreed that these were great - the portions were very generous, and everything was super flavourful! I did, however, find the Kung Pao Chicken and the Spicy Beef quite oily. The Milk Tea with Pearls ($5.50) was refreshing, not too sweet, and had a good ratio of boba (pearls) to tea. Also, instead of a teapot being brought to your table upon arrival, there is a self-service tea and cutlery station. Most of the people working there seem to have a good command of English. It also doesn't close between lunch and dinner so it's a good place to come for linner... or is it dunch? Overall, My Kitchen gave me a great taster of Taiwanese food, and I will definitely be back.
