The county was formed in 1764 though the county seat was not moved to Bolivia until 1978 with this courthouse completed in 2001 along with the other buildings in this county government complex. the courthouse is a three-story structure built of structural steel, concrete, and stone. The building presents a formal, symmetrical façade with a prominent northeast-facing portico supported by four large columns. These rise to a wide entablature that frames the recessed third story, I would describe it as neither Modernist nor Classical Revival, as the building has a sense of classical gravitas while maintaining a contemporary footprint. The interior has a grand staircase rising to the second story and five courtrooms. The building houses the County Superior Court and County District Court of the 13th Judicial District. The government complex is massive and so there is plenty of parking that is a short walk to the building. It is not open on the weekends and even if it was, cameras are not permitted inside. Still, you can walk the grounds to admire this impressive structure. [Review 1364 of 2025 - 4483 in North Carolina - 24916 overall]

The courthouse's design is attributed either to John Hawks, architect of Tryon Palace in New Bern, or Gilbert Leigh, a local builder. It features a T-shaped layout with Flemish bond brickwork, a central courtroom, and a second-floor assembly room often referred to as a ballroom. The building has a two-stage wooden cupola with a weathervane atop the structure, reflecting classical British architectural influences. During the Revolutionary era, the courthouse was a hub of political and legal activity. Figures such as Joseph Hewes (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), James Iredell (later a U.S. Supreme Court Justice), and Samuel Johnston (Governor and U.S. Senator) practiced law and held meetings there. It is one of the most impressive buildings in Edenton and well worth a stop. [Review 838 of 2025 - 4268 in North Carolina - 24397 overall]

It's still an active courtroom and we learned that the NC Supreme Court holds court here once in a while. You can walk around freely and sit in the judge's seat which was a cool experience. It was named for General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a daring and trusted officer under George Washington. It was settled by English and Scotch-Irish colonists who moved inland from the coastal regions after 1750. The original county seat was Waynesborough, established in 1787 on land owned by Andrew Bass, but it was later moved to Goldsboro in 1850 following public votes in 1845 and 1847. The Wayne County Courthouse was completed in 1913. Designed by prolific architect Frank Pierce Milburn in a Classical Revival style. I've seen other Milburn courthouses including Columbia County (Lake City Florida), Wise County (Virginia), Boyd County (Catlettsburg Kentucky) and Lowndes County (Valdosta Georga). The courthouse absolutely reflects the grandeur and power of the county. Its most striking features are the large porticos on the east, north, and west facades, each supported by four classical columns that rise to pediments at the roofline. Inside, the main courtroom occupies the second floor, serving both the County Superior Court and County District Court of the 8th Judicial District. There is street parking nearby and don't miss Veterans Memorial Park across the street. [Review 752 of 2025 - 4184 in North Carolina - 24312 overall]
