There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Seeing the two buildings back to back really drives home how courthouse architecture has evolved. The old courthouse is all Victorian ornament and cupola drama, while the Justice Center is streamlines, efficient, and clearly designed for modern court operations. Never thought I'd be writing a review about a courthouse but here we are…read more I had the privilege of sitting in the courtroom of Judge Pendergrass for a traffic violation. With everything going on in the world and people losing faith in our justice system my experience today gave me a little faith in humanity. Judge Pendergrass is the kindest, most disarming and fair judge I have ever seen, onscreen or off. Many in the room were nervous, tense before walking up to the podium. Even if they were handed heavy fines or judgement, they walked away relieved. He speaks to everyone with kindness and asks about their lives. One man had a one year old son and he talked to him about how exciting it must be sharing their first Christmas. He gave him extra time to pay off his ticket so he could get something nice for his son. At a stressful moment in everyone's lives, the demeanor of this judge is hopeful and heartwarming. Thanks for reinstalling some faith in our justice system. Judge Pendergrass truly is honorable.

I have had to visit the courthouse more often than expected in the last few months, but I have had a relatively good experience each time. The staff is very friendly, but I do think they could improve s few things. The courthouse has very minimal signage to help navigate which if you're like me, I don't make it a regular visit to go the court so I was turned around many times. At first, I was given 3 different floors to find my room, but finally found it on my own in the basement. The rooms didn't have a list of people assigned which made it more difficult and the parking is a few blocks away, but again not marked well. I don't mind walking except when it's cold and pouring rain outside. Unfortunately that was both times I had to come. I do praise how clean they keep the inside and outside and the bathrooms as well! I also love that the bathrooms are individual vs having many stalls. Overall, I am happy with my experience but the few things that could be worked on would be better parking, staff more knowledgable of layout and signage to help find your way inside.

They claim you received a ticket 29 years ago(1994) and have a failure to appear charge which…read moreresulted in you driving privileges being suspended in North Carolina. 2 years after the alleged suspension a North Carolina driver's license gets issued. You ask for a copy of the alleged ticket, all notices regarding a court appearance being required for a ticket issued to an out of state driver and they refuse to supply anything. Fast forward to 2008, the same out of state driver's license that allegedly received the ticket and driving privileges in Nort Carolina being suspended in North Carolina came back with no problems when supplied for a traffic stop. Instead of dealing with the incompetence you get a total due and call to confirm they received the check, they confirm they received the check but it's for more then is due. They provide a receipt in the mail showing every amount apparently the word refund on the receipt means addition to those morons. The total was 421.00 plus 20.00 for installment plan(which there wasn't) so 441.00 total then refund of 20.00 for the installment plan total 461.00. Received the refund today 20.00 not 40.00. They give anyone your information, I called once and couldn't deal with the stupidity of the person I talked to. My girlfriend called and got all the information including the date of the ticket, the driver's license and number they issued the ticket to, not once did they ask to speak with me to get my permission to release any information like I said morons.
