It has a four column portico and a stone balustrade at the roofline. There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. It was named for General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a daring and trusted officer under George Washington. It was settled by English and Scotch-Irish colonists who moved inland from the coastal regions after 1750. The original county seat was Waynesborough, established in 1787 on land owned by Andrew Bass, but it was later moved to Goldsboro in 1850 following public votes in 1845 and 1847. The Wayne County Courthouse was completed in 1913. Designed by prolific architect Frank Pierce Milburn in a Classical Revival style. I've seen other Milburn courthouses including Columbia County (Lake City Florida), Wise County (Virginia), Boyd County (Catlettsburg Kentucky) and Lowndes County (Valdosta Georga). The courthouse absolutely reflects the grandeur and power of the county. Its most striking features are the large porticos on the east, north, and west facades, each supported by four classical columns that rise to pediments at the roofline. Inside, the main courtroom occupies the second floor, serving both the County Superior Court and County District Court of the 8th Judicial District. There is street parking nearby and don't miss Veterans Memorial Park across the street. [Review 752 of 2025 - 4184 in North Carolina - 24312 overall]

In 1713, the Tuscarora War took place which effectively ended organized Native resistance in the region. The county itself was officially formed in 1791, carved from Dobbs County and originally named Glasgow County in honor of James Glasgow, North Carolina's Secretary of State. It was renamed Greene County in 1799 to honor General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero known for his role at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The county seat is here in Snow Hill and has been since 1828. The courthouse was built in 1935 under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the courthouse replaced an earlier structure from 1878 that had succumbed to fire. The building reflects the Classical Revival style popular in public architecture of the time. It is a three-story brick and concrete structure with a commanding Doric portico on its west-facing façade. The portico features four columns rising to a pediment There is street parking nearby in the center of Snow Hill and there are lots in the vicinity. Definitely try to tour the courthouse if you can - the iron staircase to the courtroom on the second floor is impressive. [Review 755 of 2025 - 4187 in North Carolina - 24315 overall]
