The Paisley Centre stands as an example of how big business can rob the independent entrepreneurs of the custom that make smaller towns like this self sufficient. If this place had some sort of theme tune to accompany you as you walked around, it would most certainly be Ghost Town by The Specials, which would come with unfortunate comic effect. Where once there were high street stores existing hand in hand with local businesses of all descriptions, there are now at least a dozen units lying deserted. The remaining units, as often happens in money pinching times such as these, have been snapped up by cheap looking pound shops, eager for whatever morsels of your money they can get.
It's a shame, considering this building was once obviously hoaching with shoppers. It looks like it has taken a battering in recent years so I'm taking the economic downturn into consideration, not to mention the opening of the mecca that is Braehead closeby. A few high street stores survive in here....but by that I mean I can only remember a JD Sports. There's a couple of phone salesmen looking for your custom, but I always feel awkward bypassing stalls like this since I know even if I did stop to chat I'm happy with my phone provider and couldn't earn the guy a sale.
The saving graces of this shopping centre are the sparsely scattered charity shops, one of the last existing Co Op department stores in Scotland, and the family friendly In-Stores in the heart of the centre. This section of the mall has a lot to offer, from PC repair to quirky wee wool shops and spangly haberdasheries. There's also some nice, cozy family owned cafes here which are a good alternative to the surrounding fast food joints.
It's sad that this lovely, big building is being wasted in the way it is. Paisley could potentially be a booming town if it wasn't being stifled by its big city business neighbours. read more
