I realize this is a kind of legendary shop and that other folks may be using this for much more intense outdoor sports than we were, but apparently there is no task too small for them either. We found ourselves in Moab and in need of a kid's backpack and we stopped in here, and got ourselves sorted with their advice in less time than it took to finish a cup of coffee. I assume they thought theft was happening since I had a purse but it was extremely rude and uncomfortable. I even asked if they would like to look in my purse and they refused. Firstly, if you act shady of course the employees will watch you. People steal, it's a fact- regardless of race, religion or creed. Secondly, it's not your right to bring an animal inside everywhere you go, this isn't California and other states have rules you should follow- respect that. Thirdly, COVID killed so many people, if you didn't wear a mask it was on you to prove you were vaccinated, otherwise you were endangering all around you- including store owners. Lastly, but most importantly, when it comes to gear shops in Moab, Pagan has stood the test of time. There is no other with as wide of a selection of climbing & mountaineering equipment. The staff and owners are incredibly knowledgeable and will not try to upsell you- they'll either give you what you're looking for, or direct you to what you NEED, not fill your rack with fluff and bull. The service and prices are the best in town, no joke. If you can't handle people with different mannerisms and personalities, why do you even go out of your house? The intent is what matters, and those at Pagan intend to deliver you the best equipment, at the best prices, with the best service they can, hands down. Period. read more

One of my favorite places to shop while I'm in Moab! They have stylish outdoor wear for ladies that my wallet can't help but hate. I'm a bit curvier and I love that they carry bigger sizes in most of their brands. I came looking for a tank that would show off my new prana sports bra and I was able to find the perfect one from Patagonia with the help of their knowledgeable staff. They are also my go to for camelbaks, camp gear and any other fun stuff I didn't know I needed. I love Pagan!! A note on the other reviews that say they hate dogs, i don't believe that's fair. What if someone who is allergic to dogs needed something, but it was covered in dog hair? It has nothing to do with love or hate for animals, but rather a business that has to cater to every single person. read more

I have been asked to leave 2 outdoor sporting goods stores in my life because I had my dog who travels with my wife and myself everywhere we go. This place just like REI very rudely and abrupt told us to take our pup outside. Maybe your owner hates dogs but no law states that dogs can't go inside sporting goods stores so just like REI I will never enter your store again. I entered every shop in Moab after that and shared with the staff how much the pagan shop hated dogs, everyone rolled their eyes and laughed. I was worried at first when this happened because I then entered other shops asking if I could have my dog inside. They all said yeah no problem. On vacation in Moab looking for a few different things and we stopped in while walking downtown, sign on the door said vaccine or mask, well all of us have been vaccinated so we went in. Extremely rude from all the way across store yelling something, told him I could not understand him, he comes closer and tells us we need masks, three other people walking in behind us at that point, told him we are vaccinated and he demanded to see our cards to prove it. Well not going to prove myself and not going to carry my card on vacation since there is no "mandated passport" for COVID. Super rude attitude from employee, we said okay and left as the other customers also walked out. I would drive out if the area by miles and hours if I needed something to avoid this attitude, I get it that you are a business and it is your right to refuse service, I respect that, but add proof required to signage or change to mask mandatory in our store and I would not even come in then and be subjected to rude people. read more

Worst customer service I've ever had to deal with. My daughter purchased her first Camelback there and it had ripped after a few hours of hiking. Not Pagans fault BUT the way they treated my daughter for trying to return it was uncalled for. The manager told her "it's sh**** material but not our fault" and "there's nothing we can do to help you". He also told her that "you shouldn't have put it on the ground". It's a backpack... It would've been fine if he was decent and said it was store policy to not give refunds. Don't buy anything there!! read more

Three words: Mueller Euro tape Pagan is the only US distributor of Mueller Euro tape, which is the best climbing tape I've found, and they sell it for a very reasonable price ($2.50 with tax as of Dec 2011). It's stickier and more durable than US brands. Perhaps if you have super hairy hands/wrists this is a bad thing. For me Pagan a must stop on any trip to Moab. As others have noted their shop is small, but chocked full of gear. Customer service is great and staff are knowledgeable on the local crags/towers. read more

My dad and I are hiking here in arches and it started raining. I didn't have my shell layer. I went over here and got a shell in large did think to put it on. I get it on on the hike and it's tight around my chest. My dad and I hiked all day and when we got in the car I realized the reason why it was right was because it was a women's large not men's. I went back later that day and they helped exchange it for the right size. I would also like to point out that they don't mark up prices. I paid the same as the Patagonia besote charges on their website. Fair prices and go west business dealings. I would trust these guys in the future. read more

Our first time in Moab and we happened to walk into Pagan to ask about local crags. We were tremendously lucky we did so. We immediately were greeted by staff member Austin who went above and beyond in providing us with information and recommendations. In the 3 days we were there we went to as many of his suggested places as we could and they were all amazing! We were so happy that we ran into him in person later that week to thank him in person. This place rocked(pun, eh?). I've been to so many REI's and EMS's that I can't agree with the other reviewer who said it's a large place. I was surprised to see how small (-.5) it was considering all the climbing in the area, you can climb anything not named on a USGS map. The guy working there was friendly enough. You could definitely outfit yourself for your vacation, they have all the standard goodies despite the fact that it is in "Suite 2". I didn't really need anything, but who can pass by a gank shop. Now, I'm not much of a climber, especially since I'm built like John Goodman, but I am a Rigging Grip. There's all kinds of gear that is useful in my job. You never know what odd piece of gear you might find as in the case of this badass spoon/fork combo by Light My Fire. 3 bux and it's pretty cool. Getting rained out of Indian Creek after a few days of fantastic climbing - life could be worse. In an effort to kill some time on the way back home, we stopped into Pagan Mountaineering. Disappointing to say the least. To say that their selection of climbing shoes was quite narrow would be like saying that Donald Trump only sounds like kind of an asshat. Couple that with snobby service and a generally unfriendly vibe, especially for a climbing store, and this place will not be getting my business or that of any of my friends any time soon. I make it a point to give local climbing shops business, so long as the service is good (you can always buy the product online, but the service and local beta are what makes the local shops so invaluable) - Wilson's in Bishop, Mammoth Mountaineering, Desert Rock Sports in Vegas, The Backcountry in Truckee, Nomad's in Josh all will get my business if I need something and happen to be in the area. This is a relatively large climbing/hiking shop that offers a great selection of gear for your desert hiking needs. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. With all the Mountain Biking that goes on in and around Moab its a relief to see that there still exists a good climbing/hiking shop in town. read more

Fun independently owned outdoorsing shop in the McStiff's strip mall. They carried a lot of nifty items for the small space, including Patagonia wear. The employee was really helpful in helping me figure out what the best way would be to patch a tent. I totally thought he would shove something at me to make a sale (which is not unheard of in the world of retail) but he suggested that I get another product that was not at their store. Super helpful and nice. This is a great place to get a tent patch or other nifty camping items. And you can get a beer next door! read more

We came to Utah without proper hiking shoes, and instead brought tennis shoes that were not appropriate for hiking slickrock. We stopped by Pagan on our way to lunch--it's a small retail store in the McStiff's strip mall, but it has pretty much everything you could need. I get overwhelmed in Big Box stores, so i always prefer a small specialty business even if i have to pay a little more for the merchandise. I found the sales people to be good--not rude but not trying to be overly helpful either. We were in and out pretty quickly since we got what we wanted. For the more advanced hikers, they have plenty of things to choose from if you're doing a multi-day trip. read more

First came in to replace worn hiking socks and a forgotten sun hat. Despite the low register sum we were heading for, the personnel were incredibly friendly and helpful. So guess what? On our last day in Moab we came back when's husband decided to get new hiking boots. And the person who helped us was incredibly informed and positive and got us in and out. This is a clean, well organized, well stocked climbing/outdoor store with helpful and knowledgable staff. I read another review where someone said the prices were high - climbing gear, outdoor gear, and brand name outdoor clothing/shoes are all expensive items. I research prices on high dollar items before i buy, and i find their prices to be right on with the retail price of what things should be. My personal experiences with this store: The first time I went in to just look around and check things out. I was asked if I needed help, I said no, and I was left alone to browse and felt no pressure from the staff. The second time I went in was to scout out the ropes. I was asked if I needed help, I timidly asked a couple of questions, and was given a whole lesson on ropes. All of my questions were answered in complete detail, I wasn't made to feel like an ignorant novice, and I got great information. Although I hadn't planned on buying a rope that day, I needed one and because the staff was so informative and spent so much time with me, I went ahead and bought my rope. My third experience - I bought a Camelback Arête , already paid for it, and after the sale, one of the staff walked me through the pack showing me the different features. That was going the extra step because they already had my money. Bonus points there. My fourth experience - the stitching on the carry handle on my new Camelback Arête came undone. I went in there, didn't have the bag with me, told them what happened, and they immediately ordered a replacement. (there wasn't another one in stock) So, they have my business from now on. I recommend this store if you want assistance from a knowledgeable staff that are active climbers. read more

If you're looking for it, they've got it. This place is stacked with good climbing gear. From ropes, to shoes, to T-shirts, you name it. They even have little doggie booties for walking your dog in the desert without them burning their paws! Unbelievably cool! I;ve got Pagan bumper stickers on my car now, for sure. read more

Went to Pagan to buy some new rock shoes for myself and my son. Found the staff more interested in texting than wanting to help with our selection. None the less, I managed to get one of them to help us and bought two pair of shoes. My son wore his shoes on the climbs but I decided to return mine(never wore them), since they were not quite the right shoe for back home at Devil's Lake. When I came back to the store to make the return the staffer told me that all sales are final and no returns are accepted since "Moab is a tourist town". Say what? I complained and said that I'll post a review stating my dissatisfaction and dispute the charges with the credit card company. He called the owner and subsequently made the return, but not without attitude and first recharging my card for the shoes again. If I wasn't alert I would have been double billed for the shoes that were now back at the store. The credit was eventually applied. Pagan sells gear at full retail, a customer should get full service in return. I can purchase the same gear online at a minimum 20% discount, but like to support the local shops where I vacation. Stores need to provide more than just selection to keep customers shopping there. read more
