Menu is exactly as you would expect - pies, battered sausage, cod, curry sauce and mushy peas - what else do you need! As a final note, I dont know how others feel about this, but in my opinion, the best chip is the chip that is tinged brown with a slight (only very slight!) flop. Fish Hut does have these, but when they are queued out, they maybe dont always let them cook long enough to get that nice light brown colour....shame but they are hardly the only chippy in Britain to do that!

My visit to the Fish Hut today was actually quite a surprise - it's recently seen quite a face lift, both inside and out - gone are the grimy windows, the dingy counter and grungy posters (last one's a bit of a shame actually, I really like those!). It's in with the shiny glass, white walls and er... parallelogram shaped plates? You can eat in, or take away - unlike the good old days though, you can tell you can eat in; it wasn't until today that I realised that there were tables! We ate in, and it was good; a portion of chips, battered sausage and scallop (the potato kind, not the sea food kind). The size was great, the chips were nice and hot with nary a green, black or oddly undercooked one in sight and the batter on the scallop and sausage was crispy and light. If you don't fancy fish and chips (who are you kidding?) there's actually a coffee shop upstairs too - I didn't get anything this time, but I think I'll be making a trip back because it smelt great! The coffee so shop was also doing baguettes and assorted sandwiches, so now you can suggest the chippy to even the most health conscious; safe in the knowledge that you can still get your plate of spuds...

Before visiting Brett's, I had been satisfied with the other two standard Headingley chippies, Midgley's and Bryan's (both excellent) but, as I realised on my first visit, Brett's outshines both. There are many, many reasons for this; firstly, it just feels like a chippy - always a long queue of cold Leodensians dying for something warm and fattening, staff who yell orders to each other and have aprons covered in chip fat, and a couple of rickety sheltered benches just outside the shop for those who can't wait until they get home. On top of this, the setting (inside an old, ivy-covered terraced house on North Lane) makes Brett's both quaint and perfectly located in equal measure. Whether you've been at the cricket, the rugby, or just on a ten hour drinking binge, Brett's is always a welcome sight. But it is the food, of course, which makes the biggest difference. Rumour has it that the reason that Brett's batter tastes crispier than anywhere else is down to the use of beef fat, rather than vegetable oil - a stroke of genius I'm sure you'd agree (as well as making the food taste better, it also means there are no vegetarians ahead of you in the queue!). The cod and haddock itself tastes and feels fresher than any other Leeds fishery I have stumbled upon, and the chips are just glorious. Go to Brett's. Go now.

However, with the increase of students in the outskirts of city, KFC's, clubs and bars, the town is almost recognizable. This is apart from Bretts Fish Restaurant. The is nowhere else you can sit and eat a takeaway or sit down and have a meal in a 1930's oak paneled surrounding! Bretts ivy covered restaurant really does stand out from businesses such as Lucky's and Gangster's takeaway on the same road with very contrasting, modern exterior. Bretts has many famous specials (as well as their gorgeous, traditional fish and chips...very scrummy) such as Lincolshire Maris Piper potatoes and Icelandic Haddock. Bretts has put a classy twist on a meal that has been branded in modern society as a dirty, greasy takeaway. You can eat a well presented, fish meal in Bretts restaurant with a lovely bottle of wine off the extensive wine list! Due to it's location Brett's is often frequented by cricket media and fans!!! You must book your table during Test Match season well before!!I

The shop front entices you in with its cheeky appearance and what I think is a brilliant name for a fish restaurant, and on my visit the takeaway was packed (it was around 5PM so that made sense), however service was quicker than I expected it to be. What struck me about the cod & chips I got was the utter lack of grease, which made a refreshing change as I didn't have to wipe my lips after every bite and I also felt slightly less guilty about eating deep-fried goods. They tasted splendid to be honest, and the prices were so reasonable that I'm thinking of going back and checking out the restaurant. It's won awards, and I can see why.

Surprisingly, given the amount of takeaways on this street, this is the only fish and chip shop (unless you count Tracy's Plaice way down the other end) on the main road. Because of this, and the fact that it was jammed full of locals and students when I went in, I assumed it would be something special. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the Friday night rush of business, I was left slightly disappointed - I ordered just chips and scraps, and was served rather slowly for such a simple order. When I eventually got it, the food was edible but by nothing to write home about...perhaps my expectations were just too high.

I therefore had very high expectations when I treated myself to a fish and chips supper from Bellfields. I have to say, I was rather disappointed. The fish was very thin, suggesting they had chopped a standard sized fillet in half to make it go further. Unfortunately, this half sized portion was not accompanied by a half price cost and so I have to say I won't be visiting again. As well as serving traditional fish and chips, they have extended their menu further for an even greater selection, including greek gyros and ice cream. The staff seemed friendly/polite, although they were quite busy, I was served rather quickly, they had a staff member taking fish orders, while you wait in a queue to pay, I liked this approach as it meant not only was the fish cooked fresh to order, but they were keeping the queue moving quickly without delay. They do have gluten-free fish here, and they use a separate fryer too which is great, they do have limited other options, I would have liked them to manage a gluten-free curry sauce/gravy to go with the food, or a gluten-free sausage, hopefully, they'll consider that in the future. I was impressed with the quality of the fish, the batter was also crispy and a good portion size too, the chips were fresh, seasoned well and cooked well, I enjoyed my meal, it was quite reasonably priced at just under £8 too. I had to settle for some mushy peas for the side, I didn't enjoy them at all, I found the peas to be hard and almost inedible. It is cash only I'm afraid - this is one of the biggest negatives for me, I also do find the packaging to be a little flimsy and cheap, compared to the box which most other chippies are using now, so there are areas for improvement but otherwise The Bridge is a great local chippy with a greek twist and a very good gluten-free fish. Sunday openings (rare in a chippy) are also a huge plus. I would return. 4*

As well as being a traditional English chippy, they have restaurant space upstairs for you to dine in and enjoy your meal as well. Anyway, the fish they order in daily is delivered fresh and on ice, once battered in the crispy goodness it's delicious and I always order it (£3.30 for cod or £3.40 for haddock). The chips aren't too greasy and you receive a hearty portion. As well as Holland's Pies, which they warm up in the oven, they also make their own in-house (steak & ale, cheese & onion, beef & onion or rag pudding). Pretty much all the extra typical bits and bobs you can order are available (mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce, scampi, sausages, onion rings, chicken nuggets, spam fritters and canned drinks). If you're a philistine and don't want a chippy tea, they also offer a range of filled jacket potatoes. They even sell ice cream - no wonder this place is busy, it's a gastronomic wonderland.
