Living in NYC, I do have to make the trek upstate for my outdoor activities. I hike and camp in the Hudson highlands and now kayaking will be added to the list as a regular activities. Mountain Tops makes it too easy! My first experience with them was last year. My boyfriend and I booked a kayaking tour to Bannerman's Island, which included an on-island tour. Neither of us had ever kayaked, but after a quick tutorial we were on our way, with their guides nearby, of course. The guides are great (well, they were great that day) and they have comparable prices. Now that we know what to do, we go straight to the waterfront and rent out kayaks for the day so that we could paddle the river and pull up on random little shores to explore. It's an affordable and easily accessible activity. Tours need to be booked online or at the actual store location on Main Street. Kayak rentals can be done at the waterfront, depending on availability. And yes, you can use your card at the waterfront! I do wish they had later hours. Imagine kayaking in a sunset...oh!

Upon entering the dressing room with multiple pairs of pants, I discovered some were mislabeled in sizing. Which wasted a lot of time having to go back for correct sizes. The women's EMT section is awful. Very few options. There was only 1 shirt in my size, L. I traveled almost 2 hours to shop at the Paramus location. I also needed boots. They didn't carry my size in any black boots. I also found mens shirts incorrectly labeled in size. To top it off, after arriving home I realized the employee did not pack the correct clothing in my bag, making this trip completely worthless. I called and asked for a manager and was Informed one was not available. Never again! Awful!

I signed up for a day-long excursion to Slide Mountain. For a reasonable fee: I was picked up & dropped off at a convenient location and provided with all the outdoor gear I needed for the trip, i.e. snowshoes, walking poles, microspikes and crampons. The group was small - 4 of us total - which made for a more chummy experience. I love the outdoors and grew up camping in the summertime- but wanted to whet my appetite for snow sports and outdoor winter activities. This is perfect for a fit, active person who likes the outdoors and wants to try different things out before committing to purchasing equipment. Having the proper gear prior to these excursions is crucial and owning it can become expensive. This is a happy medium where you can try things out before making the commitment. If you get a good group dynamic, you can end up with built-in hiking buds, which is a huge bonus :) I cannot recommend Gear To Go Outfitters enough for renting outdoor gear and especially for their guided trips. I think this will be the first of the many and have definitely opened up an entire world of outdoor winter activities for me!

Told me he had found out where I work and told me he will proceed to go to all of my company's Yelp pages and threatened to make up false ratings. 2. Called me names on the phone and refused to let me talk. 3. And actually, accused me of stealing stakes (that were never actually given to me) and ended up charging me MORE than the original rental. (which I will try to dispute) 4. Threatened to sue me for writing the yelp review... Told me that he is a lawyer and will sue me for everything. I've never had a business owner act so unprofessionally and in such an undignified manner. I would have gladly updated this review with a positive if he had approached this in a fair, polite manner. Instead, he insulted, threatened and even charged me more money because he had the ability to. He used the excuse of "damaged items" (btw, one of our tents came with a hole patched with scotch tape), and claimed we stole stakes from the tents. When I told him that we never received stakes, he flippantly told me "Well you signed the delivery papers, it's not my problem! Why don't you look around harder, check your car!" ... we had never received stakes. He then proceeded to charge me $163 for the "stolen" stakes. I am glad I had the thought to record the entire phone conversation. I only wish Yelp had an option to post the recording... There are many other places to rent your tents from, save yourself the time, money, and after-trip stress. They are thieves...

But I always find something really cool here and have really interesting conversations with the owner Steven. I was looking at a sweater didn't see my size - I continued to carry on in the store because I genuinely love it. Today the back room was covered in open boxes making it very difficult to shop regardless I found a stack of the sweaters (the one I was looking for). The guy working proceeded to yell at me stating they were all out. I said I'm looking for the grey sweater in a large - to which he replied "we don't have grey". I pointed at the stack and I know I'm not color blind but maybe he is, so I said that's grey. He pulled the sweater out and throws it at me! Yes throws it! He was mad he had to get off his seat, his phone and actually work. I put everything down my family and I walked out! Individual working on Thursday 7/27! Pretty general layout in most locations, and just like this one, it lives up to it. I found most of the store to be in good shape, in terms of organization, and also how kept up and clean it was. Some of the items are fun to look at, with the decision of buying or not, which we all fall under the same boat. Some of the issues for the most part are cramped in some areas, which again, can stick for the most part. I found the store to be filled with a number of employees, mainly young adult age, and their customer service wasn't the greatest. Most wouldn't go out of the way, etc. Improvement is definitely key to see here.

Good customer service, there. Winter gear almost all out in February, so end of season and clearance sales on some items, but not others (same snow bib for women was on sale, the men's version - not on sale? guess it's about how many they've sold?). Didn't really find any ski socks of note. Some jackets on sale. And some weird jelly bean flavors. Skip the bubble tea version, they taste terrible. Bike and ski services in the back. Prices aren't too bad, so hopefully would be smooth to get service. Will bring back my bike later this year to see what they can do about a sticky lower gear.

Upon returning twice to return a total of two items, the cashier staff were rude and not caring, almost disgruntled. Very odd and won't be returning here even though it is close to work. I liked and enjoyed the shopping but the staff either get heat from their corporate people (which is probably the case) or are just very unhappy. I can't imagine why outdoor loving people would be unhappy!
