Encouraged by my yoga instructors here in Milwaukee, I signed up for a Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga class at Koha Yoga. The staff and teachers here are incredibley welcoming and encouraging. Once you find parking (they have a small lot but I had no problem finding street parking nearby) you can follow the signs to the dock. I got signed up, fitted with a paddle, grabbed an achor weight and right into the water we went. I had never paddleboarded before but I was assured I would be able to do it - and I did! As my time on the board progressed I got more comfortable with balance, but definitely expect to fall in a couple times or even do it on purpose. The water is great there. Also, I was impressed with how courteous the other boaters and jetskiiers are on Pewaukee Lake. I never felt unsafe or like they came too near and it was really peaceful the whole time. For our class we paddled out quite far to an island where we all dropped our anchors to enjoy an hour long class led by Hope. She's a fantastic teacher and the class was designed for all levels. While it is strange at first to get used to paddling while standing, the cool still lake water makes getting the hang of it quite easy. The calm steady demeanor of our guide definitely helped as well. There were eight adults and two kids for this trip. One of my friends was gracious enough to allow one of the two children (which were both mine) to ride with her. The kids were over the moon excited about getting to see the lake in this way. They had the benefit of wearing a life jacket and the "job" of keeping an eye on the life jacket that rested near the front of the board. This combo proved to be very helpful in keeping the kids entertained and happy. We started off at the Pier near Smokey's Bait Shop on Pewaukee Lake. We then made our way to the channel to practice turns and standing. Once we all were up and paddling, we headed to the island in the middle of the lake. Once there, we were all able to jump off the boards and cool off. The guide also had a waterproof iPhone case, so he was able to take some group pics. After our trip to the island he told us how to get back, and we were off on our own journey back to the start. It was glorious! I felt so empowered. You can go anywhere on a paddle board, even in the weeds. It was total freedom! My son and I jumped on and off the board dozens of times in the middle of the lake! Hands down, it was the best trip we've taken as a family in quite some time. It's not often you can entertain a 6 and 7 year old with the same activity a 33 year old would love or even like! The grand finale was the Acro Yoga lesson that was provided after we docked our boards. Every one of us got to feel the benefits of some good acrobatic traction with a yoga twist. Our guide said at the end of each session, "Welcome to the new you," and I have to say I actually felt that right then and lasted even days after. We went paddle boarding here as a family for my mom's birthday and it was a great experience! Whakapaingia (Whaka) was our instructor and he was so fun and helpful. He coached us how to stand up on the board, and we all did it! The price for lessons was very reasonable for a family of four. You can also rent paddle boards here too if you don't want the lesson, but I think the lesson is a good first step if you want to feel comfortable on the board. The first time I met Whaka I noticed that he is as energetically radiant as he is physically strong. Ever met a rugby player yogi massage therapist? Here he is. When Whaka offered to "fly" me through a "flying yoga" session I was curious and a little scared. I am not in the best shape (understatement) and my hips and low back often ache (understatement). But I trusted this guy instantly and the resulting flight was awesome. When he balanced me on his legs a la childhood "airplane" rides, I felt both challenged and nurtured. Whaka gives clear directions verbally and with little physical touches. He guided me into stretchy positions and gradually I melted. When we finished my session I felt revived. I simply felt better. Whaka's work is hard to explain because, like Whaka himself, his work is unique and amazing. His rates and hours are flexible. If you are ready for a change, meet this guy. My boyfriend and I bought a groupon for a 90 minute paddle boarding lesson, and we just got around to using it last night for my birthday. Whaka was our instructor, and he was awesome. He took us out on the water and showed us some basic moves such as turning, stopping, and standing up. After that, he took our picture and told us to go for it! He was extremely helpful and easygoing. The vast majority of the 'lesson' consisted of Bryan and I paddling up and down the shoreline of Pewaukee Lake, which happened to be extremely calm. I highly recommend checking this place out. The owners are great, they have quality equipment, and the scenery is gorgeous. I would definitely go back, as you can rent a paddleboard for $20 with no lesson necessary. read more

We just showed up one Thurs afternoon. I had called the day before so maybe he remembered. Whaka and Matt were there immediately and started helping us. It was one of those weird cold (65) Wisconsin days between hot days, but water temp was over 70. Despite the fact he needed to get ready for a flight to one of his workshops, he got everything ready for us, 6 people. Boards, paddles, life vests all well kept. We felt completely safe paddling outside of swimming buoys, and we stopped at the beach. I hope to try out one of their SUP yoga sessions. So nice to have this available close to home. read more

In the quest for a mindful activity my daughter and I decided to try paddle boarding at Koha Yoga. Whaka got us outfitted and out on Pewaukee Lake for a fun hour long inaugural paddle. I had never done this before and was apprehensive but discovered that one could explore their skill set safely in this environment. Other watercraft operators were very courteous and respectful toward paddle boarders. Gear provided by Koha Yoga was all in fine shape and Whaka great with customer focus. In the end, both my daughter and I were excited by how well our adventure went and how much fun we had. This past weekend I enjoyed my first experience of paddle boarding with my sister and the instructor Wacka. Right from the start my sister and I met Wacka and his wife. They are extremely nice and make you feel really comfortable. We were guided step by step on how to get on the board and how to do different moves in the water. What I like is that I did not feel rushed, very laid back activity and the view was gorgeous. I already recommended this place to friends in Racine and Milwaukee. I couldn't ask for a better experience to get over my fear of paddle boarding. I live in Florida currently and I will definitely do paddle boarding here next time I visit Wisconsin.
