Some things still hold true a year later: 1. Scheduling, paying for, and signing the waiver for your adventure online is unbelievably easy. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes for 2, 3, or 4 hours at a time (embarking between 9a and 3p. You can add a lesson before your rental, a cell phone dry bag, a dog life jacket, and a large dry bag all for an additional nominal fee. You can launch from Sebago Trails (side note: they have a really neat - and super secure - docking system/apparatus for you to get in and out of your vessel safely) or pick-up and take-away (something we haven't done, but - contrary to what I said above - *is* something we'd come back here for if that was an option for us)! 2. There's plenty of parking! Unfortunately: a) One of our kayaks was broken (which they told us about, but still put one of us in), and in the end we had to turn around after a little bit of paddling to swap it out. The kayaks aren't all the same brand or style, either, so where I was in something super sleek (that moved quickly through the water), my partner was in something much bulkier (that took a lot more work to paddle). b) The staff was so friendly and welcoming the first time! The second time, not so much. So, for us anyway, it's a bit hit or miss there. The SPTC map: a) The first time we came we kayaked Panther Run (a really mellow, lazy river inlet), portaged across the Mill Street Dam, kayaked all the way up Panther Pond, and ended at Hawthorne Beach where we swam and enjoyed snacks. It was a workout, but we saw so much wildlife and hardly saw other people. Such a peaceful, lowkey, lovely way to spend a day! b) The second time we came there had been no rain most of the summer. And that changed the Panther Run experience entirely (as there was barely any water): we got stuck on the sand so often, that we decided to turn around and head out into Sebago Lake instead (another route that STPC offers if you're not renting and taking away). We kayaked up to Hot Tub Island (which is this man made ring of stones) for lunch but it - and the knee deep water around it - was absolutely covered in and full of bird poop. So we kayaked over to Raymond Beach which was the other spot STPC suggested, but it was so crowded we had nowhere to pull up. In the end it was a nice day bobbing in the water - we saw lots of fish, baby ducks, turtles, and an enormous barn owl! - but not for $90.

The past two times we've been here, we've done their guided wildlife kayak tour which includes a stop on Ram Island with snacks. This summer, given the COVID issues, they are unable to offer any guided tours but you can go down to their dock and rent stand up paddle boards or kayaks (single or double) and they will provide you with waterproof maps of the harbor so you can paddle to various locations and explore on your own. They also provided us with waterproof sacks and life vests. It was all first come first serve (I couldn't reserve the kayaks ahead of time) but they have so many it's not an issue. They said they do have more demand for paddle boards from time to time. We rented three double kayaks and wore our masks, as did the staff, until we shoved off the dock. We did the recommended kayak path to Burnt Island and walked around the island a bit before we headed back around the bay. In truth, two of our party decided to just float in the bay in their kayak and didn't paddle anywhere. All in all it was a wonderful and different way to experience the bay by kayak than the guided tours and at the end, they gave each of our teenagers/young adults a Tidal Transit Kayak sticker for their water bottles/laptops. I tried to pay for them but they gave them to us for free - and we will gladly advertise their company for them! Next time you're in Boothbay Harbor and looking for a fun, COVID-safe, outdoor activity for the whole family, make sure to visit Tidal Kayak Transit Company.

We stored our bags with the kind folks manning the station -- they were all SO friendly and they even had a lil puppy chillin with them. Our guide was Harry and he was AMAZING!! He helped gear us up, put us through a mini safety/how to lesson, and took us out! As someone who's never kayaked on the ocean, I felt extremely ready with Harry at the helm! He was super knowledgeable of history, the boats, the wildlife, and the marina. He was so fun to yap with and patient with our shenanigans and jokes on the water hehehe. We saw many beautiful boats, including historical reenactment sailboats, sea birds, Osprey and their nests, and talked to some locals on the water. Harry said it was the windiest he's seen all summer when we were paddling back - be prepared to get a good workout in!! It was sunny out so no need for thick garments- even the water didn't feel icy cold like I expected. None of us tipped but even if we did, we would've been safe in this weather. For people's reference if you're wondering what to wear: Swimsuit, leggings (shorts would've been fine on a day like this), water wicking long sleeve top, hat, sunglasses, Tevas. They provide life vests, water shoes, and dry bags!!! THANK YOU HARRY FOR MAKING OUR TRIP SO SPECIAL

Did a self-guided tour of the area and the customer service gave us a quick, yet thorough, overview of the 'exploration' area and other tips. It was fun just navigating through the water and seeing Portland from this perspective. We were rookies and didn't plan to bring snacks/drinks, but there's a little island that you can easily get to and land for replenishment/take a break, with an excellent view of Eastern Prom. Would certainly consider doing a kayak guided tour next time, since we were kind of floating aimlessly around with the only goal of soaking up the last bits of summer. Still, it was very fun!
