We were driving around the coastline of Damariscotta and saw their little stand next to the road so we pulled over into the municipal parking next door. It was a few minutes after 5pm so they were closed. I looked them up online and booked a spot for their 3-hour Oyster Ecology Farm Tour for the next afternoon. It was $60 a person. Staff was nice and helpful. Our guide, Sam, took a total of 8 people in 4 tandem kayaks out. We were able to see and learn about every stage and the processes an oyster goes through in the farms out there. It was so much fun. He was knowledge and personable. We even saw a couple eagles and some osprey. We floated back in and Sam gave us the run down on oyster chucking. Would definitely kayak here again. Don't forget your sunscreen and water! read more

Wow did we have a great time with Alan during our family's Sunset Tour. This was the highlight of our weeklong trip to Maine. Me, my husband and teenaged daughter had no experience whatsoever but Alan went over safety and instruction before we set off and kayaked around Hog Island. It was an amazing and profound way to experience all that the mid-coastal waters and wildlife this part of Maine has to offer. We saw seals, a bald eagle, a school of mackerel and more. read more

We had an amazing time on our 3 hr adventure. Mitch (I believe he is also the owner) was our guide and was extremely knowledgable and accommodating. We were fortunate enough to be added last minute to one of his tours and while we had kayaked before, we had never done sea kayaking. Mitch took his time to explain all safety and techniques needed for a wonderful trip. Midcoast Kayak made renting a kayak a breeze. Most kayak rentals only offer guided tours. My son and I wanted to explore on our own, and it was no problem with Midcoast Kayak. They will even deliver kayaks to you. When we arrived, we were given life jackets, paddles, a bag to keep items dry, and a map. We were escorted to our kayaks on the pier, where we climbed in, and gingerly pushed into the water. No carrying super heavy kayaks to the water! My son and I were running late for our return time, I called to let them know, and it was no problem. They could not have been nicer or more accommodating. The team at Midcoast Kayak run a nice shop in an old "shack" right on Main Street. It's across from Fernald's so don't forget to visit Fernalds if you come to Midcoast Kayak. We've never taken their tours but have bought gear and kayaks from them and also rented gear and kayaks from them in the past. Three things are evident -- 1) They are honest who won't try to screw you. 2) They'll be straight up with you about what they have and what's available. 3) They are very knowledgeable about kayaking. To me thats all we could ask for and that's why we'll keep coming back when we need more kayaks in the future. read more

My wife and I rented two tandem kayaks for some free-form paddling with our kids and then came back for the oyster ecology tour the next day. Both trips were great--very fast to get out on the water, nice equipment and very friendly service. We especially appreciated Mitch's 2+ hour introduction to the history of oyster cultivation on the Damariscotta river. The freshly shucked oysters at the end of the trip were plentiful and a perfect end to the afternoon. read more

Went on the morning tour out of Muscongus Bay - excellent adventure. They spend a few minutes teaching you the right way to do things - and although I had kayak'd before, I found out I was actually doing many things wrong. Then we set out - we went around Hog Island and out to see seals on a rock ledge. We also got to see a couple Osprey. All the while, we got good explanations and the pace was comfortable. Overall we ended up going about 5 miles in our 3 hour tour. read more

We went on the Muscongus Bay Wildlife tour with Mitch and wow! It was an incredible paddle. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The views were breathtaking, and the paddle was easy even in a tandem kayak with a child that chose to paddle when she felt like it. We will definitely be back and will recommend to others. This was more than we could have asked for in our first sea kayaking experience. My sister and I reserved to go out for a 3 hour nature paddle. We were the only 2 scheduled for this trip which we found out when we got there. I ws pleasantly surprised that even though it was just the 2 of us that the trip wasn't cancelled. So right there -- I mean that's good business. Our guide Mitch was wonderful. My sister and I both can have a little social anxiety when meeting someone for something like this and usually are happy enough to blend in with the crowd, however, Mitch was just so kind and laid back that we instantly felt at ease with him and were then excited that we would have this private tour! I went with my gut when choosing this place from ones that were closer to camden which is where we were staying. This one was 45 minutes away if I remember correctly. Anyway, my intuition paid off. After letting Mitch know that this would only be my 4th time in a kayak and my first time in a "sea kayak" and that my sister was a kayak virgin he suggested the tandem kayak for better stability. He helped us with our life jackets and the spray skirt or whatever it's called. He taught me how to steer with the rudder, which was a first for me. It took me quite a while to get my body to listen to my brain with that lol, but Mitch was always so encouraging and I never felt stupid. You can tell he genuinely enjoys being out in nature. We saw a porpoise and we even had a seal pop up from the water only yards away. Also saw a bald eagle. He pointed out other birds as well which was great because I love birds. He took pics of us and texted them to me later that day. Recommended a great place for lunch! He's just a nice human, you know what I mean? Instantly felt comfortable in his presence. And we felt safe we his instructions and with his wealth of knowledge and experience. If we go back to Maine sometime, and I hope we will, I am definitely doing this again with Midcoast Kayak. Another nice thing about his nature cruise is that it's 3 hours, where a lot of others were either 2 or 4 hours. 4 sounded a bit tiring and 2 hours just isn't long enough in my opinion (did 2 hr tours in Florida and it goes so fast) when you factor in getting set up, so 3 hours was perfect. Spent maybe 20-30 minutes getting everything set and ready and getting in the kayaks and then just a lovely paddle. Anyway, choose Midcoast Kayak for all of the above reasons!! read more

Just got off the Water,,Had a great Oper Water Sea Kayaking lesson.My instructor was Joe G. Wow what a teacher. He showed me many new strokes. We worked on my Edging and Bracing. We spent the perfect morning at Musvongus Bay. We met eagles, seals, and even a kelp farmer preparing her submarine fields for next season. Mitch is very knowlegable about the ecosystem. This is the second year in a row that we have done a midcoast kayak experience and we'll definitely be back for more next year. The sunset kayak tour with Luke was amazing. A very knowledgeable young man, Luke, brought us around the harbor to view a bald eagle nest (complete withe the mom and babies visible!). We also saw loons feeding, seagulls stalking the loons for their food, corcorans and a blue-bellied heron!! The tour was fun yet not overly strenuous and Luke even timed the tour so that we were able to take a break on Loud's island beach. It was a beautiful and serene way to spend an early evening on the midcoast of Maine. Highly recommended!! read more

My family and I went out for the Wildlife tour on Muscongus Bay in two tandem kayaks. Our tour guide, Eric was fantastic! He was witty and made our kids feel included. We had an issue with the other party showing up very late for the tour which resulted in our kayak trip being cut short, but the owner, Mitch handled it promptly and professionally.
