The past two times we've been here, we've done their guided wildlife kayak tour which includes a stop on Ram Island with snacks. This summer, given the COVID issues, they are unable to offer any guided tours but you can go down to their dock and rent stand up paddle boards or kayaks (single or double) and they will provide you with waterproof maps of the harbor so you can paddle to various locations and explore on your own. They also provided us with waterproof sacks and life vests. It was all first come first serve (I couldn't reserve the kayaks ahead of time) but they have so many it's not an issue. They said they do have more demand for paddle boards from time to time. We rented three double kayaks and wore our masks, as did the staff, until we shoved off the dock. We did the recommended kayak path to Burnt Island and walked around the island a bit before we headed back around the bay. In truth, two of our party decided to just float in the bay in their kayak and didn't paddle anywhere. All in all it was a wonderful and different way to experience the bay by kayak than the guided tours and at the end, they gave each of our teenagers/young adults a Tidal Transit Kayak sticker for their water bottles/laptops. I tried to pay for them but they gave them to us for free - and we will gladly advertise their company for them! Next time you're in Boothbay Harbor and looking for a fun, COVID-safe, outdoor activity for the whole family, make sure to visit Tidal Kayak Transit Company.

It was very easy to work with the staff to make the arrangements, and they made the trip happen even though they were not fully staffed for their in-season time. When we arrived the staff had taken the kayaks down to a grassy area in the park. The guide got us fitted with life vests, paddles, and spray skirts, and then it was down to the boats for some quick lessons about paddling technique. We were soon out on the water. The guide did a great level of working with our level of experience and provided clear directions about the paddle. We crossed the bay from the put in location to the Breakwater Lighthouse. While this lighthouse is accessible by walking the length of the breakwater (.8 miles) it was great fun to see it by the water. Once we got to the light, we then paddled down the length of the breakwater to a beach by the Samoset resort. The wind was blowing pretty strong from the shore, so this was a pretty good paddle. Once we got to the beach, we were able to get out of the boats for a few minutes and then we were back on the water. The next leg was a pretty good open water crossing again as we made our way back across the bay towards the shipyards. Here you get to see some of the industrial sides of the water. People who depend on the sea to make a living. There was a fishing dock where large fishing boats offload, there is the coast guard station, and then there is the marina and restaurants. Overall we were on the water for just over 3 hours. Our guide was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable about key subjects and really provided a very educational as well as enjoyable paddle. We heard stories about the lighthouses, we learned the history or the area, the lobster fishing industry and all about the ports. While Breakwater Kayak is a smaller operation than some of the others in the area, you are guaranteed to get a well-trained guide who is really wanting to make sure that you have a safe and memorable adventure.

My partner and I visited the Acadia area for Labor Day weekend - during COVID so no surprise that…read morethe whole world had also descended upon rural Maine that weekend. We hadn't made any reservations for activities ahead of time, so the morning we decided we wanted to paddleboard, I was a bit nervous in case all the businesses in operation were already booked up. I called 10+ places with no luck, then stumbled upon The Activity Shop's number. Turned out to be our lucky day - The Activity Shop is located ~1 hour outside Acadia, so they didn't seem to be inundated with tourists. The owner (I think), Chris, worked with us on the phone to figure out the details of our reservation - and he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He took the time to explain everything - the best area to paddleboard, when to go to avoid low tide, safety tips, etc. The place he recommended, Blue Hill Harbor, was devoid of other tourists and amazingly gorgeous - we felt like we owned our own slice of paradise. The boards we rented were high-quality. They seem to only offer full-day rentals which can be a bit pricey ($65 per board) but I liked not having the pressure of having to return the boards within a certain amount of time. We played around as long as we wanted and when we were done, we could just leave the boards by the dock and let the Activity Shop know we were done - super easy. Definitely recommend The Activity Shop if you are looking to rent kayaks / canoes / paddleboards near Acadia - a much better experience than the tourist traps in Bar Harbor!
