We had a wonderful 2 hour cruise with the captain and first mate very helpful and fun. The cruise is around the harbor and it was just enough time to enjoy the scenery. Wind did pick up so we sailed at 5 knots nicely for awhile. It was also much cooler on the water than on land, so a welcome relief. All the sails went up, and the small size of the schooner was perfect. To see the sea The Lazy Jack is a 48 foot schooner that holds up to 14 people. Not exactly in comfort but you can find a comfy place on board to see everything that is going on. And a whole lot is usually going on this ship. The Lazy Jack was built in 1947 and is modeled after the great Gloucester fishing schooners of the last century. It was used for years to haul cargo from Massachusetts down to the Bahamas. Now the great ship is doing the work of hauling tourists around Boothbay Harbor. Under the skilled command of Caption Joe and his son Michael, the ship gives two hour tours around the harbor. Lots of great views of the islands, lighthouses and if you are lucky you might even see a seal, osprey or bald eagle. The two hour tour costs only 32 bucks for an adult and is an very cool experience. Capt Joe just doesn't prattle away the entire trip. He will point out various things of interest and answer all questions but he leaves enough quiet so the passengers can enjoy the sound of the ocean and wind. Unfortunately we didn't have a whole lot of wind so it wasn't as exciting as I hoped but it still was wonderful trip. Just so much to see and learn, the two hours went by so fast. You can bring you own booze and junk food on board and even take a turn at the wheel if you desire. These old schooners take a lot more sail management than the more modern sloops or catboats and just watching Michael and Joe constantly adjusting the sails was quite entertaining and educating. The tour runs from Memorial Day to the end of October and can also be chartered for all day excursions. A fantastic way to spend a couple of hours on the water and easily worth the 32 bucks. We returned all wind blown, a bit wet and a little sore but very, very happy. read more

We enjoyed our two hour sail on the Lazy Jack. The Lazy Jack is a beautiful, 70 year old schooner, 48 feet in length, and sails out of downtown Boothbay Harbor. My wife made us reservations online, easy to do and they take Paypal. We showed up at the dock 15 minutes before sailing and were welcomed by the staff. It was late in the season, and we were the only passengers on board. Sweet! Private cruise! We motored out of the harbor and up sails and away for Rams Island Light. Beautiful day, cool breeze and brilliant sunshine. Captain Joe at the wheel answered a few questions and was informative and engaging without burying us in a two hour prewritten spiel. Scenery was gorgeous, there were cormorants and gulls, lobster boats and a few other sailing vessels, spectacular, really. We had a great time. PS I am 6 foot 3 and was in no danger of being struck by the boom. The boat is easy enough to get on and off, and there is padded seating, and rope handrails. It is a sailboat however, not a whale watching barge, there might be some choppy water and sea spray. If you cant make it two hours without a toilet or a snack bar, try Cap'n Fish. read more

My son and I booked and paid for our MID JULY cruise an hour and a half in advance. We were not told that the vessel would not sail if no other guests booked. Our visit with In-Laws in Maine is for 5 days, this is likely to be our only father son time. My wife left to drop gramma off in Topsham and we awaited our departure. You failed to book any other guests for your SCHEDULED departure and made it our problem. I wonder if your udder and complete indifference to customer satisfaction in cancelling on us may be part of why you failed to book other passengers. Went on this boat on an extremely windy day and apparently they hired a kid who was only on the job for 5 days to man the sails. As they were raising the sails, the boom swung around and smashed into the back of our friends head. She was in obvious discomfort and "Captain Dingbat Joe" showed zero concern and said "ahhhh she'll be ok". Not once did he show any compassion or concern. This is a shady operation managed by inexperienced staff and a selfish capitan. In fact, when we addressed our disappointment he became rude and condescending. He kept saying his boat ride was a "virtual" experience and "these things happen", well Captain Joey, if we knew that out of control booms were a part of the experience we would have passed. Your lack of compassion along with your self absorbed banter the entire ride was distasteful. You can take your chances or you can explore other options. read more

Sunset Cruise In all, an excellent experience at reasonable cost. My girlfriend and I signed up for the sunset cruise (online the day before with no problems). We arrived about 15 minutes before, showed our passes (I just presented them the email on my phone and they were cool with that) and got on. The boat was, I'd say, cozy. I don't know boats, anything about sailing, or why they say knots instead of mph, but the boat was classic to me, and perfect for watching a sunset. The captain and crew were laid back, answering questions when raised, but generally not inclined to give a play by play, which works for a get-in-touch-with-nature sunset cruise. I was rather disappointed in my trip. I had flown up from Texas and my Brother and his Fiance from Florida, to visit with my mom over the 4th of July. I bought tickets for everyone hoping to enjoy the fireworks on the bay, as well as go on our first ever Schooner. The trip was billed as a 2 hour cruise with a stop in the bay to watch the fireworks. What actually happened was a 30 minute circle around the bay, followed by an hour or hour and a half sit at a mooring twiddling our thumbs waiting for the fireworks. While I understand that it was a fireworks cruise, it was still billed as a 2 hour tour, and I expected as much. There was no wind, which is beyond their control of course, however the engines worked just fine, but I guess they don't like to run them or something. Evidently I should have known we were just going to go sit in the bay, I was never told to bring a cooler, or anything to occupy myself while I sit and wait for it to get dark. I feel like a little bit of information would have gone a long way. I expressed my disappointment, not asking for a refund, just tickets for a date in the future (If I even get back up to Maine...) and he said blankly nope, tough shit (my words). I basically feel like I got the bait and switch, but hopefully others won't have to go through the same thing in the future. I would pass on this one... read more

We booked a sunset sail (5:30pm) through Lazy Jacks, and planned our day in Boothbay Harbor around it. We arrived around 5:00, and asked when the boat would board and they told us 5:15-5:20. When we came back, they told us they had to cancel the sail because of something wrong with the starter and refund our money. I came from Oklahoma to visit my daughter & she booked us the harbor cruise. I was very hot that day (Aug 1) but once under sail there was a cool breeze. It was nice sailing because you didn't have the noise of a motor all the time. Captain Joe was very amiable and didn't spend time with a long spiel about the harbor. But if you had any questions he gladly answered them & I enjoyed talking with him. If I come back next year & he's still running it, I will book again. read more

Went with two friends. We tried to get tickets on another cruise but they were sold out. They directed us to this boat instead. We had the whole thing to ourselves! The other boat, which was crowded with people, didn't appeal. I liked that we got a private 2 hour sail! It's really a beautiful spot. You're unlikely to see any wildlife aside from seagulls. I traveled from PA to visit a friend who suggested we head out on the Lazy Jack. Captain Jack and Matt were both very friendly, welcoming and professional. We loved hearing all of the Captains many life stories including the smooch he received from Loretta Lynn. Besides boating information we learned about state birds, islands, lighthouses and proper drinking etiquette such as red wine sippy cups, homemade hooch and how many dirty martinis are actually dangerous. We had a very fun time filled with laughter, smooth sails and great conversations. And we met some wicked awesome people! read more
