What a fun way to spend the morning. On the Maine coast on a sail boat…read more Not much wind this morning but the crew took care of us. They did provide beverages while sailing. And to time to answer questions about the sights. They have opportunities for people or kids to help out with the ropes and pull the sails. It's two hours so plan ahead especially if you are thinking g about bringing kids. Remember you are close with 25 others not related to you. There is a toilet but believe deck so you have to navigate a ladder. Ordering tickets online was easy and they send you notifications via text and email. There is street parking but limited so plan ahead. Check in was easy and boarding was a breeze. But not enough of a breeze for sailing. Ha ha. Loved it!

This is a nice ferry service out of Boothbay Harbor that goes to Monhegan Island. Takes a little…read morelonger to get to Monhegan on this ferry and the time on the island is a little shorter than the other ferries. But if you are staying near Boothbay Harbor it is much more convenient than the other ferries. We sat on top as it was a nice day and the ferry was not real crowded. Had drinks for purchase and decent restrooms on board. Overall a nice ferry ride to Monhegan Island.

Wind did pick up so we sailed at 5 knots nicely for awhile. It was also much cooler on the water than on land, so a welcome relief. All the sails went up, and the small size of the schooner was perfect. This is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours on the water looking at all the shorelines with houses you would not normally see.

To see the…read moresea The Lazy Jack is a 48 foot schooner that holds up to 14 people. Not exactly in comfort but you can find a comfy place on board to see everything that is going on. And a whole lot is usually going on this ship. The Lazy Jack was built in 1947 and is modeled after the great Gloucester fishing schooners of the last century. It was used for years to haul cargo from Massachusetts down to the Bahamas. Now the great ship is doing the work of hauling tourists around Boothbay Harbor. Under the skilled command of Caption Joe and his son Michael, the ship gives two hour tours around the harbor. Lots of great views of the islands, lighthouses and if you are lucky you might even see a seal, osprey or bald eagle. The two hour tour costs only 32 bucks for an adult and is an very cool experience. Capt Joe just doesn't prattle away the entire trip. He will point out various things of interest and answer all questions but he leaves enough quiet so the passengers can enjoy the sound of the ocean and wind. Unfortunately we didn't have a whole lot of wind so it wasn't as exciting as I hoped but it still was wonderful trip. Just so much to see and learn, the two hours went by so fast. You can bring you own booze and junk food on board and even take a turn at the wheel if you desire. These old schooners take a lot more sail management than the more modern sloops or catboats and just watching Michael and Joe constantly adjusting the sails was quite entertaining and educating. The tour runs from Memorial Day to the end of October and can also be chartered for all day excursions. A fantastic way to spend a couple of hours on the water and easily worth the 32 bucks. We returned all wind blown, a bit wet and a little sore but very, very happy.

If you've never been sailing before, you will get a great introduction, and if you have been sailing before, this is the best way to go to get out on the water in this area. As predicted, it turned out to be a Beautiful and calm night. We ended up watching the fireworks from shore. They contract out their crews so it may have been that something fell apart on that side for the night trip. Just be prepared that they may cancel for any reason. A local captain we met during the fireworks show in Camden surmised that there was likely something else besides the weather in their decision. Others in our party were committed to getting in a harbor tour so we ended up getting a day sail earlier in the day. It was a Beautiful day. Competent and friendly captain and crew. They did an excellent job of hosting the harbor tour. Absolutely Beautiful boat. Great way to spend some time on the water. Be prepared for alternative plans.

Despite living here most of my life, I'm not sure I had ever really seen puffins, so I was delighted to find there was a place in Boothbay offering tours (I guess I kind of assumed they were always much further up the coast). Cap'n Fish's Cruises family-friendly, accessible 2.5 hour long cruise to see the puffins on Eastern Egg Rock is a delight. The captain and the representative from the National Audubon Society do a fantastic job at pointing out any/all coastal wildlife that they see ("at your 6 o'clock there's a seal", "just flying by from your 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock are two puffins") from start to finish of the cruise. They also add facts about the islands and information about the lighthouses you'll pass, while adding a dash of local lore here and there too! You'll learn so, so much about the Audubon Society's work at re-establishing a puffin colony here in Maine, how they're helping other bird colonies around the world, and lots of information about Maine's seabirds. When you get to Eastern Egg Rock, they'll maintain a safe distance and circle twice so that way both sides of the boats can take pics. Some notes: 1) It's probably worth it to pay the extra 15% for priority boarding so you can pick the seat you want. Our cruise left at 10am, and by 9am the line was *enormous*. I didn't think I'd get to sit outside on the top of the boat (the seats are configured in two rows of four with an aisle down the center). 2) There are snacks and drinks for purchase. You can also bring your own food, but not your own beverages (unless it's a water bottle, I think). 3) Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses, well-fitting hats and a hoodie just in case it's cooler on the water (and, for the from-awayers: it's usually ten degrees cooler on the water). 4) I didn't need my ticket, I just gave them my name when I boarded. 5) The staff was EXCEPTIONAL: again, from start to finish, they were friendly, helpful, informative, patient. Really, really impressed! The whole thing was just a lovely experience.

Always best to sit on top deck and in the stearn (rear) for a 270° view throughout. However, remember to bring a hat, apply suntan lotion and depending on the temperature bring a windjacket.

The sailor we used to ride with died this past summer, so we can't speak for the skipper anymore (we are very sad to have lost this wonderful young man!!)!! He was great at giving anyone who asked for it; a ride to remember. He was a gifted sailor who could maneuver that boat between boats and buoys like noone's business! This smallish sailing vessel will give you the taste of sailing in Maine as it traces it's route to the outer harbor and back zigzagging between sailboats and lobsterboats. The sailors will tell you about the lobster business at the turn of the century, so it's an outting AND a history lesson.
