I am one of those people who only likes to do things in public that they can do well. I was thus aghast at the prospect of a night out at a Thai karaoke restaurant for my b.f birthday. I sing like a strangulated skunk at best. However it was an occasion I could not get out of easily , so I opted to drink copious amounts of alcohol prior and during the proceedings and stay as far from a microphone as possible. The building looked great from the outside, and was set back from the main road, but fairly easy to find. Once inside I was suprised how elegant it all was, I expected complete tack really but it was kind of plush and cheesy yes but not in an O.T.T way ( you kind of laughed with it not at it). We were led to a side room and seated around a table. I was relieved to see the walls were thoroughly soundproofed. The pricing structure of this place is a little difficult to understand, basically you have to guaruntee a minimum food spend for the room - which varies as to the day of the week and the time. But also you then have to choose from a set menu - and there is a minumum order number for each choice. It did take us all a while in our inebriated state to get our heads round - but basically you end up with a table filled with food and everyone digs in!!! It cost us around £30 a head - with drinks but the food was exquisite, plentiful, and you have to remember we were in a private room. By the time we had finished eating and drinking we then had an hour on the karaoke system. Everyone was laughing so much by this stage that even the mic shy had a go ( yes even including me!). I am not sure I would stand in front of a room of strangers and subject them to my warblings - but for 12 of my good mates - I gave it a good go. When our time was up we could retire to a good sized lounge bar with you have guessed it more karaoke!! Not a karaoke convert - but would recommend for amusement value alone. read more

The set menu might seem pretty expensive but you get a LOT of food. And it's all pretty good. Definitely not the best I've had but a great selection of tasty dishes which all seemed quite fresh. You'll each get a plate of rice which they'll offer to refill at a later point, and then the dishes are put on the table for everyone to dig in to. Honestly I can't think of anything that stood out as being amazing, just that it was all tasty. I would have liked more noodles though it's possible that we may have picked a menu option with rice instead of noodles which could explain it. Can't comment on drinks because I had lager which is what it is. Karaoke was pretty strange but we had fun doing it - in the main restaurant not the karaoke rooms. I love Pad Thai and usually go for my birthday meal. They are used to catering for big parties and don't seem to mind when people turn up half soaked, 20 mins late and in full fancy dress...or maybe they did mind but I was too drunk to notice... The food is pretty good and very well presented. If you are in a large group then you'll most likely be restricted to the set menu, the cheapest of which is £20.90 per person. You may think this is a lot but you do get loads of food. Last time I went I enquired about a specially prepared meal for a Vegan friend. It was quite difficult getting the concept of Veganism accross to a Thai chef and what they offered me was pretty awful. My friend ended up cancelling and I suspect he was worried about the whole situation and didn't really fancy a plate of beansprouts for dinner. You can book private karaoke rooms here but I always opt for the main restaurant as it's a real laugh when everyone gets involved and you can have a bit of banter with the other tables. Karaoke starts at about 10-10:30pm so you have time to enjoy your food before that inevitably awful rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart rears it's ugly, tone-deaf head. Friends who aren't eating can join you after that time but there may be a door fee. I think they told me last time that it was a fiver in but I'm not sure that my friends paid. Pad Thai have a great selection of songs available but, like many other karaoke venues, the list is not available online. This review is for the karaoke bar. I've been to Pad Thai a couple of times now in search of some karaoke. You can go straight to the karaoke bar for £3 a head. It's a dark, underground bar with long, sticky tables, a bar at one end and low stage at the other. The bar's ok and does some special offers, but let's face it, we're here for the karaoke. The issue is that this venue attracts large groups and then, due to the size of them, tends to prioritise them. So if you're not in that group, good luck getting to any karaoke. The first time we managed three songs in total over several hours, the second time we didn't get any- whilst the same people had one after the other. We mentioned this to the person running the karaoke machine, but they don't really care it seems. So we left. It was pretty pointless, particularly as we paid to get in, so we left. This may be ok if you're in a group- or lucky enough to go there when there aren't people hogging the stage the whole time. It's quite difficult to find decent songs though (the selection is terrible) and I find it much easier to search by artist than by song, you have to refer to a huge book and it has multiple versions of the same songs, which is confusing. It's a shame, but I just can't recommend this place except that it's open earlier than other karaoke places, and you don't need to hire a booth. read more

This is a difficult one to give a star rating to, as I do always have a great time at Pad Thai. The food is good, the alcohol is reasonably priced and the karaoke is cracking. However, there are a couple of turn-offs. Firstly, they make the whole booking a booth scenario more convoluted and expensive than it needs to be. In a nutshell, you can't book a booth without also booking a 3 course meal. Each. This isn't always convenient - or, indeed, affordable. There's something a bit factory production line-esque about the service as well - I get the feeling we're a bit shoved in, dinner wheeled out, then chucked out at 11, no exceptions. Obviously, this is their system, and it's efficient, but it can just feel a bit faceless and businesslike. It's a bit pot-luck as to how well your sound system in the booth is working as well. That said, the food is good, if not outstanding, and I always do have a great time when I go there. So I should stop moaning, really... read more

Came here last night for my birthday and you can't fault the atmosphere! The booths I got was huge and fitted about 20 people in. We had such a good time! The service is really good and waiters are attentive. There's a decent list of cocktails and drink prices are fairly cheap. The food is good but not amazing! Ah...wonderful Pad Thai! I spent 5 years in Birmingham, but have now moved back to Manchester, and the one thing I miss, above all, is Pad Thai. Its a basement karaoke bar just off the Smallbrook Queensway roundabout, underneath a Thai restaurant of the same name. There is a main bar area, as well as private rooms for groups - there is a minimum spend for these. However you are treated very well in the main room. There is table service for drinks, the staff will provide you with a cool Thai dice game if you ask. When you have submitted your karaoke requests, and your song comes round, they will bring the mikes over to your table so you don't have to get up on stage, which is good for novice singers! This is a great place for groups, and it is often one of the only places in town to get seats for a group of people later on in a night. Its a great atmosphere, can be either very chilled on quieter nights or a real party feel on weekends. Highly recommended. read more
