This is a staple in North Topeka. Been around forever and all North Topekans love it. They have a good salad bar, hot dogs, chili, pork tenderloin. But, you go for the burgers! Parking is on the level. Staff is neither rude nor overly friendly. The fried chicken is only chicken fingers and not generous portioned. The salad bar really needs improved. It usually looks bad. I have been a customer of the Pad for over 40 years, dating back to when it was a walkup drivein with a picnictable in front! Nothing has really changed on the menu, still one of the best hamburgers in the midwest I highly recommend ghe JBC burger and a chocolate shake, my usual and don't forget the half price burgers on Monday! We went out of our way while traveling to Iowa to come have their signature pork tenderloin sandwich. Worst ever. The tenderloin wasn't even 1/8" thick. I had a chilli dog with cheese and onions, fries and a drink all for $8.47. ??? There was a small sprinkling of onion and very little cheese. The bun was soggy and of generic quality. The hotdog was generic quality. The chilli seemed to be homemade, but had too many beans and not enough meat. The curly fries were generic and you could tell frozen. I could go to any grocery store and feed myself and my three sons better food and had left overs for less money ... Anyone who spends the money for the quality of food here is just dumb. read more

When Ray Kroc was still selling milkshake machines to the McDonald brothers, Whitey Mentzer was selling hamburgers to North Topekans. The rocket marquee that marked The Pad Carryout on N Topeka Boulevard predated all the golden arches in Topeka and continues to mark the location where the third generation of Mentzers is still selling hamburgers to hungry diners. While The Pad today is an eat-in restaurant with a full menu of bunned sandwiches, along with a well-stocked salad and soup bar, the crown jewel of the menu remains the hamburger. The Pad's burgers don't arrive in corporate semis as frozen machine-made patties in cellophane sleeves. Each hamburger is hand-formed and hits the grill as fresh ground beef. Before there were uniform combo meals sold by the billions at drive-throughs all over the world, there was - and still is - The Pad offering its juicy homemade burgers of 100% American beef, where quality is measured by the number of napkins it takes to wipe off your face, hands and elbows after the last bite. I'll admit, I went to the Pad while having intense cravings for greasy goodness that's really just bad for you... But didn't want a chain restaurant burger. I just so happened to be in North Topeka and see this place with hardly one parking spot available. One would think with SO many vehicles present, that this place must be pretty awesome. I went the "safe" route and got a 1/4lb cheeseburger (deluxe style which means it has lettuce, mayo, tomato, pickle, diced onions, etc.), an order of curly fries and medium DP. I noticed the cheese balls on the menu and had to give those a go as well. Sigh. I wish I could say more about this place. Perhaps the huge CO2 truck in the parking lot should have indicated that I could have avoided getting soda, as mine was completely flat. The fries are literally Ore-Ida frozen curly fries that may have been fried and covered in copious amounts of salt. The burger was OK. It satisfied my desire for the burger craving, but I had to remove the tomato because it was oddly squishy and.... just strange. As for those cheese balls - Well, I'm finding it hard to describe those. I *think* they were cheddar cheese.... Perhaps rolled in batter and fried? They were grainy. Strange. I just wasn't sure about those. Ranch dressing greatly improved the quality but that doesn't say much with all the MSG included. :-p I wish I could say more about this place, because I'm pretty sure that my fiance (who grew up in Topeka) has raved about this place and their burgers. I'll just have to find other places to distract him with in the future. read more

Great burgers, great prices, and wonderful service. Go here for lunch at least once a month and you can get in and out in less than 30 minutes. My only complaint would be that they don't have jalapenos to put on the burgers. :( But they are still delicous without them. read more

Typically, local landmarks like this are either completely overhyped or, and this obviously the ideal, they actually live up to their reputation. Well, unfortunately for The Pad, it tends towards the former. The burgers are decent, don't get me wrong, but they are not the best in Topeka. Hell, they probably aren't the best on Topeka. Mine was pretty dried out with the scantiest piece of cheese on it, but it tasted alright for its lack of aesthetic appeal (and the rest of my group seemed to receive fresher burgers). It was spiced and dressed well, I'll give it that. The fries were tasty, and I was downright impressed by the chicken strips and the salad bar. This is the kind of place I'll have to try again. The food seems promising, and I feel like my dried out burger may have been a fluke. Or it may have been the result of parking their patties underneath a heat lamp for too long. At this point, I can't tell. read more
