5 Star Roofing - Crumpled flashing

5 Star Roofing

What can I say Michael Sperling ruined my house. He is the owner of 5 Star Roofing. I contracted…read morehim to replace my roof and gutters. I paid $29,000. I asked it to be exactly the way it was only new. I have an old historical home. The roof is composed of tile, composition, flat and plastic materials. So it would be complicated. I had three ventilation fans on my roof. Michael told me they were illegal to have on the roof and removed them and said he would ventilate it another way. Anyway I now have a very badly leaking roof without proper ventilation. The gutters look like a preschooler project. They are jagged and not even pieced together well. He doesn't have the right equipment to even cut them. Four days after he completed the roof and gutters it rained and the catastrophic leaking happened. He has never been able to fix the leaking, in fact it got worse everytime he tried to fix it. Come to find out the flashing he promised to replace he didn't. Instead it was horribly crumpled and bent allowing water to pool in places on my roof and to pour into my sunroom and kitchen and into the walls. The ceiling in my living room has cracked plaster falling off as well as the walls in the living room. When the inspector came, he wanted it signed off and wanted me to lie about the leaks to the inspector. The roof was done in October of 2025 and still has not passed inspection. Plus I was told he did unpermitted work on my house. He didn't get the right permits for the entire roof. Another lie from him. Today it was hot outside and my house became humid and unbearable because there are no ventilation fans to circulate the humid air out of the flat areas where roof fans used to be. He ruined my house!

I called several roofing companies and most were too busy to come. When I called 5 Star, they said they would try to get to me that day. The owner Michael came out that very day and went up to inspect the roof. He showed me photos of the problems he could see on my roof. Some will be addressed later, but he replaced the broken tiles to ensure the approaching rain would not be an issue. He was personable and extremely reasonable. In fact, he was so sweet he didn't even charge me because he said it didn't take very long! You never see that anymore! I cannot recommend them enough!

Sacramento Storm Rain Gutter Service - Gutter guards (EasyOn, Costco) as installed by Sacramento Storm.

Sacramento Storm Rain Gutter Service

Shawn also installed about 30 feet on gutter screens on an area subject to heavy leaf fall. They did an excellent job cleaning the gutters + hosed down all the debris that had been removed from the gutters. I would definitely hire Sacramento Storm again as Shawn was prompt, courteous and very professional.

My experience with Sacramento Storm Rain Gutter Service: On 1/25/23, the owner of Sacramento Storm…read moreRain Gutter Service came to our house to give an estimate to clean the gutters. We thought we had about 400 linear feet of gutter to clean. We learned later that we only had about half of that to clean as the house already had gutter guard on a lot of the 2nd story gutters. He charged $1,250 to clean the 200 linear feet that didn't already have gutter guards (more than half of his original quote as he said he couldn't just cut the original quote in half). We agreed after the cleaning to have them install gutter guards on the remaining 200 linear feet. On the day Sacramento Storm arrived to install the gutter guards, I asked the owner to show me what product they would be using; I told him that after I stayed up late doing research on the different types of gutter guards, I wanted the guard that had the raised embossed design consistent with GutterGlove's LeafBlaster Pro product. He went to the back of his truck and returned with an empty box of product with the raised pattern design and said that is what he would use (he later said he only showed that to me because I asked about it and that he did not say that is what he would be installing). I only came out a few times during the installation because the installers were throwing cut pieces of the guard from the roof which I had not been warned about, and when I did come out, I was surprised to see that the men were working from the 2nd story roof with no form of fall protection. I questioned during the install why the pieces were not tightly butted up against one another (I could see a lot of the guard from my second story windows), and the owner shouted to the man on the roof to (paraphrasing), 'put them as tight together as you can'. I had in my mind that butting them against each other would have been standard procedure per the installation instructions. When it was safe to come out after they were done (it took approximately three hours for the owner and his two employees to install the 200'), I asked if the product they were throwing off the roof was what they installed, and he said, "yes", referring to the standard DIY grade product you buy at home improvement stores, and not the Pro product that has the embossed raised pattern design and 40-year instead of 25-year manufacturer warranty. I would have asked sooner but it just didn't occur to me with my fear of being fallen on from the men on the roof when they were working above our courtyard. In checking with the manufacturer of the installed product, Gutterglove, they said that neither the owner nor Sacramento Storm Rain Gutter Service were one of their certified installers. I paid an additional $4,350 to Sacramento Storm for the DIY grade gutter guards, for a total with cleaning of $5,600., or $28 per linear foot. Some photos of install attached. In my opinion, I did not get the product I was promised nor the quality installation job I thought I was paying for. My recommendations: Know how many linear feet you need so you can determine their price per linear foot; check if they are manufacturer certified installers for the product they plan to install; ask if they comply with Cal-OSHA approved fall protection requirements if they plan to work from the roof (I assumed that gutter guard installation was done off of ladders alone but learned otherwise); ask if the gutter cleaning before install is included or an additional cost; get more than one quote. Master's Window & Gutter Cleaning did a great job for us. The company used to be owned by my good…read morefriend Brian Anderson, so I already had a good feeling going in, but Luke absolutely delivered. He came out to clean our solar panels and gutters and was incredibly efficient. I was stuck working and on calls the whole time, so I was not able to hover or play quality control inspector, but I did not need to. Everything was clean when he arrived since I had just finished cleaning the sidewalks and patio, and when he left, the place looked exactly the same. No mess, no debris, no signs that anyone had even been here except that everything was spotless. Luke also sent me pictures, which I really appreciated. It was honestly a relief to see that he cleaned out what had to be more than 20 years of gutter gunk. That is not a technical term, but it should be. We have had rain the last couple of days and the gutters are working great. Water is flowing like it finally remembered what its job was. Super happy with the service and would definitely recommend them.

Some confusion going on. I had power washing done on my home. I was quoted a price by phone, but…read morereceived a different, higher estimate by email. It was no big deal and I agreed to the higher price, but the technicians came to do the work with the lower price. Again, no big deal, but still confusing because it's not clear what I'm paying and price should be clear (especially if you are pre-writing a check). I confirmed the time of my appointment on several occasions which made it confusing when my technicians arrived an hour later than they should have and I had to ask for an ETA on their arrival. I suggest rather than committing to an exact time, provide a range and flexibility. That way customers can decide if that range works for them. Being on time and providing status updates if you're going to be late is a professional curtesy especially for customers on tight timelines. The cleaning was done nicely, but I did later notice spots in corners that were missed (i.e., behind doors). The front porch area was cleaned, but then the technician blew leaves back on it. They do answer their phones unlike other competitors that you just cannot seem to get ahold of no matter what. However, their power washing is a lot higher price than other competitors. Unfortunately I don't have time to have them come back out and fix anything they might have missed. I'm strapped for time as is. I'd work on communication, attention to detail, and leaving the place clean. Also, consider putting before and after pictures in some sort of written professional document like a PDF you can leave with the customer same day with a receipt before you leave.
