Po-Ke - A Restaurant That Has Grabbed Our Attention…read more There are a couple of similarly named restaurants called Po-Ke in Calgary. I'm reviewing the Po-Ke at: 908A Centre Street North. Po-Ke's website reads "Bringing the traditional Hawaiian dish with the incorporation of Japanese and West Coast flavors to Calgary." They sure do, and it has been my favorite Calgary restaurant since I found it over eight months ago. My daughter gave my wife and myself the heads up as to the merits of eating at Po-Ke. This was about eight months ago, and due to Covid, we have been ordering in via DoorDash to our home. We have ordered at Po-Ke at least twice a month over the last eight months. Each time, the dishes ordered have been consistent with extremely fresh ingredients. That includes their delicious spicy rice and shrimp bowls, which I've become quite addicted to. I may not recognize every ingredient, but their dishes are above what one would expect for amy delivered food. I can't wait until Covid is given the boot, so we can dine in person. If you like spicy, ethic food, and are adventurous, you really must give Po-Ke a try!

They were very generous on the fish. Only thing I didn't like was the rice as a bit hard. I wish it was more soft and warm. But overall, I loved it. Good big generous portion for the price I paid. Too bad the restaurant is not in downtown. It is a bit of a walk from my place (downtown). Definitely can't come here during lunch time. Highly recommend giving this place a try.

It's a clean and charming but small space with only four group-size tables, and long benches along one side of the wall that wouldn't be comfortable for eating. Unless they typically have long waitlists, it might be better to get rid of the longer bench and squeeze-in a couple more tables for individual diners. Their ordering system can be a little confusing, first you order from the menu and then select modifications or extras on their tablet. The tablet is arranged from the restaurant's point-of-view, so it would have been nice to get some guidance and instructions from the waitress on how to use it properly. I'd recommend getting extra fish, and extra sauce if that's available, should you prefer an adequate balance of carbs, proteins, and moisture in the poke. Unfortunately I did find a tiny hair in my meal which could be easily missed, still a No Bueno.

We ordered 2 Honolulu bowls but instead of shrimp we got salmon. We also got an express poke with salmon and spicy salmon. They were running out of rice so one bowl was brown rice, another sushi rice, and the last one half sushi and half quinoa. The bowls tasted good. When we arrived the staff was sweeping, then handling food, then handling the register, then back to handling food. We didn't see any hand washing or use of gloves. Tried a bunch of dishes to share and thought each was tasty but a couple stood out as better. Drinks : kombucha , passion fruit mojito, and chichi ( my favourite , this was like a fresh blended pina colada ) 1. 5/5 Kale salad ,Don't skip the kale salad it was easily my favourite dish , great dressing and a little bit of crunch. 2. 4/5 Taro tots, great flavour and a good crisp , very filling. 3. 3/5 Fried coconut squid , I was expecting a little more crisp and coconut , it seemed to be a thinner coating and quite large pieces of squid which were okay but much softer than I expected for a fried dish. 4. 3.5/5 Grilled chicken satay , it was labeled as chili peanut sauce but sauce was quite plain sweet peanut in my opinion , chicken was quite drowned in sauce as well not what I expected for grilled. 5. 10/5 , Crispy chicken wontons , these were amazing , crisp shell and juicy filling , served with a sweet honey mustard.

Hula is a new poke restaurant in the chinook mall food court! Yay, a fresh and healthy alternative…read moreother than sushi, salads and soups while you shop in the mall. I have been here more than a handful of times and I really love their flavour profiles, especially Yuzu(for me). Also, they load you up on veggies(tons of kale, yay!) and rice. I think the problem that I have had with Hula is the consistency. A couple of times, I have gotten heaps of salmon/tuna and sometimes I barely got any. It was pretty much a guessing game on how much meat I would get. And to be honest the salmon and tuna aren't the best or the freshest(the freshest or second best you can get on Calgary). I have been to Poke in Centre Street and they load you up on pretty fresh salmon and the price point is the same. I mean I would eat there again if I was craving for poke if I was in the mall. But I wouldn't make it a plan to go there just for Hula.
