Traditional poke bowl with coconut rice and salmon
    Samantha S.

For downtown poke this place is okay. I ordered the traditional bowl with salmon and coconut rice. Other poke places the rice is not hot and with the fish it's nice and refreshing. At Hula the rice was quite warm and there really was not much flavour to the whole bowl. The salmon was a few small pieces, I would have expected more based on my experience at other places. They are very quick - which downtown at lunch is what you want. Do not have plastic cutlery - believe it's wooden/ compostable forks, spoons and chopsticks. Not bad but definitely not my favourite poke experience.

Lei - salmon in togarashi sauce, cucumber, red pepper, avocado, green onion, red pepper strings, spicy peas, furikake, & microgreens.

January often means jumping on the 'healthy' bandwagon and trying to eat foods that are good for you. That's why I was very happy to find Hula in the new Brookfield building. The servings are the perfect size for me personally but I could see them being a touch small for others. So far I've tried the Nikkei, Sweet Potato (with kelp noodles), and the Lei. They have all been delicious with a nice balance of textures and flavours. The plantain chips ($2) are also great - perfectly salted and just a touch spicy. The chips are in front of the cash so just grab a bag as you're ordering. The other nice thing about Hula is that most menu items are dairy and/or gluten friendly. I don't personally have allergies but I appreciate that the menu is allergy-friendly for days I don't feel like having dairy. The line can get kinda long but they are very efficient and it's worth the wait. My new favourite lunch spot in the core!

Slowly but surely, I will try all the poke places in Calgary! Lucky for me, most of them are downtown (and +15 accessible!) so I can zip over during my lunch break. What I like about Hula is that they have a list of their bowls or tostadas, you just pick your protein and which flavour you'd like and that's it! Build your own bowls = long lines = extreme hanger This is a tried, tested and true mathematical equation lol I went with the Nikkei bowl which came with ahi tuna, avocado, grapefruit, red thai chili, togarashi sprinkle, crunchy peas, black sesame seeds all tossed in a wasabi lemon creama on a bed of rice and yuzu kale. All the flavours and textures worked really well together and I felt full and not lethargic after. I will however not get the red thai chilis because omg, they were super spicyyyyyyyy Get here early, or else you'll have to deal with the dreaded lunch rush and long lines!

Really good poke. A bit overpriced for the portion. But we tried this place in Vancouver and were glad to see it in our own city.

There are some good stuff about this place…read more I got the Poke Special Bowl. The fish were fresh and the portion was big. The scooper spoon they used was big. They were very generous on the fish. Only thing I didn't like was the rice as a bit hard. I wish it was more soft and warm. But overall, I loved it. Good big generous portion for the price I paid. Too bad the restaurant is not in downtown. It is a bit of a walk from my place (downtown). Definitely can't come here during lunch time. Highly recommend giving this place a try.

Have been coming here everytime we go for Coco or Tokyo Street Market, so I think it's fair to say…read morethat it's not bad. But that being said, there are some things they could definitely improve on. We have ordered the salmon, poke special, spicy poke burrito, and their poke hotdogs. Their bowls are great, very loaded and the flavour profile is great. The poke burrito was a mess and wouldn't order again. The hotdogs were prepared horribly, all the times we ordered it, so safe to say that we won't order those anymore as well. Also, the last time we ordered the poke special dog, it was very blah and almost cold. I would say that we would probably come back just for the bowls, if we are in the area, but in my opinion the 17th avenue is a far better location. Also, everytime I enter this store, it smells of something of chlorine, which their other stores don't smell like. So can't truly recommend this location, but if you are in a pickle and crave poke it's not too bad.
