This is the newest branch of the City of San Diego Public Library, and the one closest to home now. It's located on the southern edge of Pacific Highlands Ranch across from Canyon Crest Academy, a short walk from PHR parking. What I like about this branch includes: * Friendly and helpful staff at the Information Desk; * Open feeling thanks to minimal walls and barriers; * Separate adult, teen, and children reading areas; * Large, modifiable community rooms; * Meeting rooms; * Comfortable seating; * Fully equipped work stations fitted for electronics; * Food and drinks allowed on 3 outdoor reading patios. And this branch is a LEED Silver-certified green building for its design and innovative energy conservation. Smartly done.

I needed to renew my library card and was in the area so I decided to stop by this pretty new library (inaugurated on November 2024). Oh my! Such beauty, architectonically so pleasant, reminds me of a famous old train station in Barcelona with those high ceilings. Everything is new and perfect (except too many teens putting their feet with their shoes on on the fabric chairs). That should be prohibited, it is not ok to sit where someone has put their dirty shoes. Other than that, well behaved crowd, pretty popular library looks like (or maybe is because of vacation time). Several spaces, tons of seating possibilities inside and outside at an amazing patio. The library has a distinct lettering at the entrance, like old school one. Very nice, feels good and inviting. The tiles at the patio before you enter the library itself is art by itself, with numerous words in English, Spanish, and Kumeyaay, the language of the native Americans that populated this area. I was amazed about the originality of the fonts used on the tiles and the trying to decipher the words. Super cool. Pretty vegetation adding the perfect green touch. I will be going regularly, already checked out a bunch of books! Congratulations for designing such an amazing and aesthetic library.

Brand spanking new!!! We opted to visit the multi-million library to see what the hype is about and boy this library puts our local library to shame. Everything is new and state of the art. The architecture and design both indoor and outdoor is spectacular and very pristine. We wanted to get our daughter a library card so she can start checking out books for her school reading challenges. You have to scan a QR code then apply for the card. A card is then printed out for the parent and child. They can look up your info by providing your telephone number as an alternative. If you are looking for the kids section, go to the very back of the library where you will hear all the noise. lol. It's quiet as you enter, so be mindful of those reading, researching, working, or using the computers. There are outdoor areas you can sit as well as reserve conference rooms. This is a very nice place to host special occasions too. Lots of parking in the lot, street parking, and there are a couple of front EV parking spaces.

Brand new library in Carmel Valley off Carmel valley road and the 56... Really really nice and clean... Very modern. They have a patio outdoors where you can read and relax. There are glassed off conference rooms where you can get a group together and talk without disturbing others. I'll be coming here when I need to get some peace and quiet...

Oh my goodness, so I just left this library, and maybe part of the issue is that I've never had to return a book in San Diego, but I'll tell you what happened. So, I went inside the library, and I went to the desk that I'd gone to last time I was here, I said, hey, this book is on hold, you'll need to put it on the hold shelf. I was stating that because I couldn't renew the book since someone was in line to borrow the book. I was handing the book to the gentleman, and then he wasn't taking it, he was telling me, he kept asking me, he asked me several times, did you come through the parking lot? And that's actually the only thing I could really hang on to really well, was him asking that question over and over again. I didn't know what that had to do with me returning the book, but I said, yes. And then he proceeds to tell me what to do, keep in mind here, like, I have AuDHD, and I struggle with auditory instructions, so I think that I'm listening, but not really. At one point, I asked him, can you tell me again where I'm, what am I doing? And he told me again where I'm, what I was doing, soon as I walked away, already I was thinking, what did he say? Ahhhhhhh! The struggle! Ah! Ohkay, I just know that I need to go outside, and what he said made me picture, a United States Postal Service Mail dropbox out at the road. I'm thinking that's what I need to do, and so I go outside and I'm looking for that. And I find an ATMish machine, and this does make me think of my library back home. They do have this as an option. You can drive up and put your book through it. And I recall it works by scanning the barcode. You scan the barcode. That's how that one works. It returns the book and it gives you a receipt. Kind of cool. But you DRIVE up to that one. Here I am standing at the ATM machine, and it says press the button. I'm already nervous as I don't know what I'm doing, and I can't find the button. And I know this is probably REALLY simple, but I don't see the button????!!! I see a QR code, I scan the QR code, it takes me to a place where I can see the library operation hours. ): I'm lost, crap. I dread this but. I go back inside, I say, I don't really get it, but I did scan the QR code, but I don't get it. *handing him the book*, he goes, oh, okay, let's go *gestures and makes like he's getting up* He meant, let's go together. My legs had started to shake. I got nervous. I'm anxious. It's, like, that special autism anxiety (distinct anxiety), it kicked in. It kicked in probably moments ago. It probably kicked in as soon as earlier when he was, like, go this way. I panic in PTSD style. I say, I'm just going to give you this book. And I hand him the book, and I sit it down in front of him. Mind you, he has stacks of books in front of him, and he's, doing something with the books. I think he's scanning them and returning them. I think he's sitting there, and he's returning books!!! He's sitting there, and he's returning books??? Haha, I swear to you, I think that that's what he was doing. Now that I think about it, he's sitting there, and he's returning books. Now, consciously, I'm not thinking of that, but subconsciously, that's probably what I'm watching him do. He's taking books and, scanning them and returning them. He says 'okay' defeatedly. And I said, because I feel like you're being difficult, and I walk away. As I walked away I was thinking, he probably thinks I was being difficult. And I'll tell you what, I wasn't being difficult, but I definitely was being dense. I was being dense because I did not know what to do. Dude, just take the book from me. Goodness gracious, just take the book. I browsed for a while but I refused to checkout any books. I was terrified I won't know how to return it haha!! Instead when I saw something I liked I looked it up on my Libby. I was so shaken up when I left I realize I couldn't look at the ATM machine, I had to avert my glaze. I did not mean to be difficult. I also didn't mean to be dense, but most times we just don't have any control over the process of being dense!

It is so big, with so many different sections. They have an area for young toddlers, to toddlers, to kids. I was so impressed with how much books they have. In addition to that, they have CDs, DVDs, magazines, pretty much anything you can think of. There are a couple of different areas where they can sit and learn. I do love how there were different types of seats as well, for instance, for the younger kids they have the little balanced chairs. There is lots of play area for the kids to have sensory play. They have educational computers, there was four. They have a little area for kids to play with toys and use their imagination, so many good items. There are puzzles, coloring, pages, arts and crafts. I was really blown away with how great this library is. The staff who helped me, I did not get her name, but she was so friendly and answering, and all my questions. They have so many activities also throughout the week, such as reading time and other arts and crafts that you can do amongst other peers. I am so looking forward to bringing my child here so that he can have more socialization with other kids. And mind you, this is all free, which is so amazing. I mean, obviously we have tax dollars that goes toward this. . But yeah, you can check out their schedule for what they offer for the kids. Yeah I think this is the best library so far that I've been to for the kids in San Diego. You can also park underground. Just make sure you take your parking validation upstairs so you do get the first two hours free when validated. After that, I believe it's $1.25 per hour or something like that. Which is very reasonable for downtown. Just remember if there's any events, like the baseball games or anything like that, there might be a surcharge, for example when comic con comes on as well. This is definitely a great learning spot for young children. And if you or someone you know, doesn't have the financial means to do arts and crafts, buy so many books, or have enough space to even how all of these things, this is great that this library has it all for free. I have taken my son to the little play area where we pay like $15 an hour for him to run around and it's further up in Mira Mesa. This is just another great alternative for a fraction of the cost. Sorry I just love this so much. We are definitely coming back here and also exploring as many different libraries as we can.

A beautiful library nestled in the heart of downtown SD!…read more There are sooo many things to explore in this library. Boasting a total of 9 levels, there's an art gallery, bookstore, and even a high school here! If you're looking for gorgeous views of the city while you read, work, or study, head up to levels 8 and 9. Everyone here is super friendly and there's plenty of spacious seating options with outlets! However, if you're planning to visit, you should know that quite a few homeless folks utilize this place to rest and sleep. They're very respectful and keep to themselves, so it didn't bother me personally. Note: They have a parking garage underground and they validate up to 2 hours!

A friend of mine likes this library and I also like it for several reasons and some reasons not so much... There's parking that offers limited parking time but it is available. There's a security guard who patrols the facility and area for safety. The library is smallish but offers most services: a librarian, staff and the front desk for help, computer and printer access, a children's section and ample seating indoor and outdoor. From the many times I've visited, it was clean and everything was organized. The people visiting this library were courteous and kept quiet. One day during my visit a person in a military uniform had a heated exchange with the staffers at the front desk over the issue of why there was not a single American flag inside or outside this library but several pride flags. The staff of who appear to be LGBTQ mostly had no answer. The uniformed gentleman said he is a USA veteran and left angrily. In this situation, politics aside, I agree with the uniform wearing man, and this library, should have an American flag visible and display it with pride along with the pride flags to show inclusivity, which is what matters. I like this library but the staff should seriously consider having an American flag to show some pride for our country and not just one group.
