Convenient self-checkout, great selection of children's books, and helpful staff. This place is clean, spacious, organized, and has friendly staff. I've taken my 1-year old here multiple times and we always find great books to check out and enjoy our time here. Plenty of places to sit and read together too. No one shushes my child when he babbles and squeals, and the front desk was incredibly helpful checking out my books when my hands were full (although the self-checkout machine is very easy and convenient as well). I've driven pass this library branch dozens of times and stopped in for the first time last week. It's bright and airy with an industrial feeling IMHO. The library appears well-organized, but it was somewhat noisy for a weekday early afternoon. Not sure why this place has only a 3 star rating, but I'll tell you why i give it a 4!! 1) super friendly people helping! Today the gentleman at the front helped me renew my library card within 5 minutes! He also showed me how to look up specific books I wanted on their online system in this time. Another lady showed me exactly where a book was that I had put on hold. It wasn't in the shelf, so she grabbed it from the stacks in the back that needed to be shelved. 2) quiet study nooks. When I want to do work, I need my own space. The little nooks are so perfect for this! BONUS: they have an outlet to charge your phone or laptop!! 3) kids section. I have a 8 month old son and they have plenty of books to check out to keep him engaged. PLUS they have summer reading programs for all ages! This is awesome! 4) now the bathrooms aren't great. I visit the libraries a lot, I have almost any libraries card in the great Los Angeles area. Guess what, having those library memberships make me can borrow so many ebooks. The different libraries have different e-books collections. Once I want to read a book, I will go to OverDrive and search the book, then borrow the book through Amazon and use the library card accordingly. That means I visited a lot of libraries for getting the cards, at least one for a big area. I thought the Rancho Cucamonga Library is the biggest and good looking functional local public library until I am here. This library, San Diego Library Mira Mesa Branch, is the most modern library I have ever seen in California, I mean public library. It has a glass ceiling, and also a half glass wall. Fortunnatlly, no Instagram celebrity will ever consider a public library as a famous photo checkpoint. The library has several sections, every section is fashion designed and all functional, also, the library has some very good events like Chinese story talking. BTW, this is the only public library that has an internal outdoor area, of course, not for smoking. read more

I remember when this library first opened. I think it has adapted to the changes in the community well. I appreciate the books for sale and the cultural activities they provide for kids. Many available study nooks, open tables and a small play area for kids. Pre-COVID, this branch worked hard to have community events in their community spaces. Mira Mesa is a more diverse than when this branch opened. Based on the events and activities available in this library, it shows that this branch serves its community. read more

They have extremely rude customer service. We are all doing our best during these hard times but one lady in particular has no idea how to communicate with parents. Look don't openly shush at my three year old when you have actual construction going on. If you want legitimate quiet think about closing off the children's area and providing a separate door. Unless you're willing to provide that, don't get on to small children who are acting age appropriately. read more

What a wonderful library and bigger than the others I've been to in San Diego. I find this location is always well organized and the layout actually makes sense! They can be a big on the slow side when it comes to items you've put on hold and normally they're just stacked ontop. I couldn't find one of my items and the older man very rudely told me I should just look for it; as if I hadn't tried that already. This location, from my experience, is very quiet and not too many unsavory types hanging around. They children's area is big too and lots of books to choose from. Overall this is my favorite library in town, I just wish the people who worked there were more polite. Also their parking lot sucks BAD. Never enough room, really needs resurfaced, very small spots (so you'd better pray the person parking next to you can actually do it properly!). read more

The good thing about this library is they have a large selection of books to choose from. Some employees are so nice and helpful, but a few employees are really uptight and rude. Like the skinny younger Asian guy was berating and yelling at a woman because she didn't speak English. And a woman named Thanh is super rude and condescending, she is the mask nazi. So many times I've returned books here, and they put it back on the shelf without scanning it and marking it returned. read more

The Mira Mesa location is probably the most convenient for me since I frequent the area. Everyone here has been nice and helpful so far. I feel that it has been pretty well maintained for as long as its been around considering I came here when I was in Jr. High/High School so let's just say its been a few decades. I have never used the online reservation system until this year and I must say that it is the most convenient thing that I have used. To be able to use my local resources....what a plus! You are able to reserve books online and let me tell you some of these books are pretty new but of course depending on how popular the selection is there might be a wait but you get an email when the item is ready for pick up. It is such a breeze. I do like this location as well because they have better hours? I don't know if I did not look correctly at the times but I think the smaller branches have varying hours so just make sure to check their times. The library also has other events for all ages so check the calendars to see an updated list of what is going on. Will definitely keep on going here! read more

My second time at the place. My hubby has been here before quite a number of times. Got my card today. The person at the front desk was helpful and good with his job. Library has a good variety of seating - private, comfy, sturdy & comfortable. Only problem private, comfy, sturdy and comfortable are not available in one place. You have to choose which would you like. Also only some tables have a socket for your personal devices. Only reason why I am giving 4 stars. Noise could be a problem at times. Not at a stretch but say for periods of 15-20minutes when kids come in or leave. However if one is seated away from kids area, it isn't a concern. Good place to focus on tasks at hand. Ps. Had given the place 4 stars till I saw the restroom. Wanted to pull down the rating to 2stars but then it would be disservice to the place overall. Restroom alert - Smells like a public urinal in an obscure location. No tissue towel near the washbasin. Stained basins and dryer. Seem so sticky and dirty I didn't want to touch them. read more

I love this library. I grew up in the neighborhood and am grateful to have a public library nearby where I can explore my imagination and learn as a child. I enjoy taking my son here to read and learn now. They have definitely improved a lot overall as a library and the organization of books is a lot more better. read more

The Library I once had a stupid moment a while back when I posted on facebook, "Does anyone have (insert book name) that I can borrow?" After no one said they did, I started looking at buying options. Then my roommate reminded me, "Hey stupid. Go to the library, its' free remember?" It was so long since I had even thought of the library that I didnt' think of it then either. Well, Since then, I've been to multiple libraries all over San Diego. The Mira Mesa one was visited when I had to pick up a book for the wifey that was on reserve. Issue #1 (My fault which I don't count against them) - The hours posted on Yelp were wrong! I have since submitted an update to the hours based on the 2015 hours, but yeah... I looked like a fool (again) when I tried to open the doors of a closed library. D'oh! Issue #2: When I walked in, I'm not sure why but I was hit with an overwhelming smell of urine. I hope that it was just something that accidentally seeped out, or someone had an accident, but what the heck. Full on stank on the nose! Issue #3: The scanner for the self check out was not playing nice with the book I had nor the library card. I had to sit there and move the barcodes in and out a few times (about 2 minutes) while the person behind me was chuckling at me under her breath. I'm not even being self conscious! I heard her! So with the urine smell and the barcode scanner, I would knock it down maybe to a 4 star. So why the 3 star? Overall the place was dark and didn't seem that nice. Not like some of the more modern libraries. This is mostly due to the LED lighting (Yay!) and the many windows (I went at night). I also didn't think the reserves were really well marked. Maybe its' because I wasn't used to the layout. In the end, I'd go back and hopefully the urine smell is gone. It's a nice library during the day, I'm sure. I agree with my friend Dena: The Mira Mesa library's restrooms are totally nasty. Not just the womens' side, but the mens' side as well. I stay away from the restroom in any way I can. It seems the staff has completely ignored even TRYING to clean (or upgrade) the bathrooms here. Book collection? Meh. It's an old library and has some books that the other branches don't, but it's very generic. It can get noisy with the amount of kids in the place and that never used to bother me, but I rarely use the branch anymore to check out or read books in there because of it. The DVD collection is pretty good, with a rather large collection of foreign films, but the condition of the DVDs was often not very good. The CD collection is great. More than any other branch save the Central Library, the Mira Mesa branch has the most computer access of any other branch. There is a bank of computers near the back of the library that's usually full of people. Express internet is available upfront. The staff of this library is great, too. The lines get long and they usualy have three people always checking out materials. They're friendly and very helpful whenever I come in. Best feature of the library? The giant deposit boxes outside the branch to use for dropping off books and videos. It's the only branch that has it and I use it often. read more

I come here occasionally to use the Internet access. While I sometimes am able to get into the one hour computer room, more often than not I end up using the express Internet terminals. There's plenty of younger kids here because of the proximity to the schools, so it can get a bit rowdy. The building itself needs a bit of an overhaul. The restrooms are quite messy; a fresh cost of paint needs to be applied to them. Also, there really isn't any place quiet to read or study. The staff are nice, though, and I occasionally check out a book from here. However, the shelves have older selections - I'm thinking of donating some of my books & media to alleviate this problem. read more

Everyone here is nice and helpful. It's not fancy, but it's well maintained. A huge used book sale selection. Games (puzzles, Legos, etc) for kids to use while in the library. Computer games for kids as well - I wish the kids commuter games had suggested ages on EACH game... They have twenty minute limit (which I appreciate) but sometimes my child 5 minutes or more to find a have he can actually play. That's a limit if the game platform. Lots of chairs for reading and tables for working and commuters of you need them. Some interesting patrons, but it's a public library, I've never seen any issue whatsoever with any patrons. The most obnoxious thing I've heard of is someone trying to bring their dog inside their purse... They have lots of free classes and programs, though I've only done a couple of these. The SDPL app is amazing, order your book and pick it up when it gets there. They no longer have late fees and they renew your selections automatically unless someone is waiting for the item. Tons of audio books and music and dvds. Lots of electronic check outs. Hours limited and sometimes seems short staffed, but that's a SD budget issue. Bathrooms are run down, but are clean. Again, I consider this a budget issue. read more

So disappointed in the customer service and humanitarian respect. I was harassed by a employee, named Barbara Schwartz. To my surprised I asked for the manager and she arrogantly replied "I am the manager." Woah I was shocked. I've never had a problem at this location, overall the staff has always been pleasantly nice. I was harassed to leave because I had my dog with me. Noted he is small and fits in my purse. I understood I politely agreed, I would step out as soon as I finished pressing print on my document. The document was literally pulled up. Barbara instead replied that I needed to step outside NOW because those were the rules. She stood next to me, practically breathing down my neck, to the point I feared for my well being. She was so aggressive. I felt like she was ready to swing at me. I politely told her that I respect her job and that it was the way she treated me. She was disrespectful, raised her voice at me, and harassed me. Didn't leave my side, practically escorted me out of the library. I plan to file a written complain to the regional manager. I hope someone who manages this location reads this. The experience was terrible. I hope no one else is treated this way. No one has the right to talk down to someone, disrespect them and harass them. I felt like I was a criminal. It was that bad. This manager really doesn't have the skills to manage a whole team. read more

Mira Mesa Library - The worst branch manager I have ever met. Yikes beware! - Libraries Near Me - San Diego, California

We have been coming to this library for years - in fact, my kids grew up checking out books here (well actually, at the building that is now The Epicenter! The variety of programs offered here is AMAZING!! From programs for toddlers up to seniors, from storytimes to exercise, to cooking classes to crafts, kitchen science to teen activities, etc, etc. They also have programs to help our local students - homework help and Reading Buddies. This library is SO community oriented! Being right in the middle of Mira Mesa puts it right where it should be to be the center of our community. There is a definite family orientation here. Is there noise at times? Yes but when you consider the purpose in the community, it makes sense that all ages are made to feel welcome! Come on in and check out everything available at our community center. read more

3.5 Stars Here's to a Renaissance to going to the Library! I say that as I haven't been in a long time myself. It often is a forgotten resource for not only books but other media and a community space to use. I've seen it countless times in its little corner of Mira Mesa but all these years have never gone in. Well that changed on a Friday morning recently. Came in got my card without too much trouble and off I went. For all you tech inclined out there you can borrow books straight to your Android or Apple device....once you get your card, you don't have to worry about returning books on time, etc. The catalog isn't every possible book but a lot is on there. Also, it doesn't limit you to one particular branch. The App they use now is Cloud Library....it used to be OverDrive but they've since migrated. I was confused since OverDrive is standard for a lot of libraries. And while I wasn't there for an extended period of time, the location itself seemed pretty quiet and clean. Maybe a little on the worn side. Not huge, but definitely some space here and there if you need it. Staff was ok, I had asked for help when I first walked in and the person there seemed disinterested but I did get what I wanted accomplished. read more

Bottom Line: I usually avoid this library, so many times I end up going to the Scripps Ranch branch (lol rhymez). It's too damn noisy and I always dread using the bathrooms here. A lot of kids roam this library and you'll see them hogging the internet terminals playing Runescape or some other random flash game. Mixed feelings. It's soooo NOISY. You definitely need headphones. A whole bunch of kids come here to hang out after school. Yeah I guess it's good that they aren't somewhere doing some drugs instead but it's not like they're reading and I feel like library should = quiet, right? Go sit in one of the little cubbies along the wall if you want some peace, but even then you might not get it. Also, I was there today and there was nearly a fight. IN the library. Yes. The GOOD: amazing book sales! Most are only 50 cents, and tons of them are in almost-new or could pass for new condition. There are a lot of recent popular releases, which I was pretty surprised about. Today I got 14 novels and 2 cookbooks for less than $10. If you're buying books, don't wait in line. They have a little dropbox thing at the front desk that you put your money in. Cool that it's an honor system, but this means you need exact change (or you're willing to tip the library, which I'm sure they need). I haven't really had issues with the bathroom, it's not great but hasn't been disgusting the times I've visited recently. I would be more worried about the germs on the keyboards and mice of the computers... they look a lil yucky. Wash your hands and you'll be good! read more

Oh my goodness, I haven't been to the library in years. I was wondering if I'd be able to find what my daughter needed. I can tell you it's been over 2 years, which I'm pretty sure it's probably over twice that since my daughter's card had actually expired and we needed to get a new one. Signing up for a new one was very easy. It's all done online as most applications are nowadays. All I needed was my driver license since it has my current address on it. If you have a different address then you'd have to bring proof of residence. In our short wait in line, Ratna, the associate behind the counter, was able to help and direct us. Ratna is awesome! Not only did she help us in the process of getting a new library card, but she also helped us try to find the one and only book my daughter needed. She looked it up first in the directory and saw that it wasn't available, but that they should have a couple in stock. She actually walked over to where the book should be and physically looked to make sure it was or wasn't there. She even walked to another section to see if it was placed there instead. It wasn't. We went back to the counter and she took the initiative to check other nearby branches. She checked two others. She even tried different ways to search for it, even ebooks. After all that, we were unsuccessful in finding it. She offered to order the book, but of course, my daughter needed the book today. Once again, I want to say Ratna is awesome! If most public places had people like Ratna, the world would be a happier place. Next time I go to the Mira Mesa Public Library, I will ask for Ratna to help me and no one else (unless she's not there, of course)! I will start this by saying I have always adored the library I grew up reading at one and always had a book on hand. Today I had some problems sorting out a book fee that I had not checked out. I had to call the treasury and it was a awful experience. I went back to the library to speak with the lady their and and I want to say a big thank you to Thanh. She was so kind and even went out of her way to try and contact them herself. I will be back to this location and I appreciate her and the library so much! It is a amazing place to be! read more

This library is around 0.2 miles from my home, but it is not my favorite. First off, every aspect of this library is in the shape of weirdness triangles, from the eerie triangular lawn lump out front to the corner sign, to it's roofs and ceilings. The architect was truly descending into madness when he or she designed this library, and the taxpayers had already arrived at madness when they paid for it. But there it is, as it is, and is quite conveniently located for me to pick up the books that I put on hold. I desperately wish I could study or get work done here, but I echo the previous reviewers' complaints. My primary annoyance is the extremely loud noise coming from the patrons of all ages and the staff alike. There are a few small and lonely signs stating the library is supposed to be quiet placed around, but what they really need is a Robocop librarian to go around enforcing the rule of silence, because it is so obviously ignored. I tell others that they are talking in the quiet zone, and they look startled and dismayed by my asking them to speak quietly or not at all - a testament to the fact that the staff are not doing this part of their job. As for the foul-smelling, funky bathrooms, they are technically clean. The smell results from the stench of some of the users of the bathrooms. For example, once as I walked into the bathroom, a homeless woman (the Caucasian woman with dark hair who sort of resembles Jennifer Connelly) followed in right behind me. The bathroom smelled fine, but the woman was a malodorous napalm. I was choking and hopelessly trying not to breathe out of my nose, but I really had to pee, so I still went anyway. My advice: bring ear and nose plugs and some Purell wipes and you will survive the Mira Mesa Library. read more

From a nursing student's point of view: not many helpful books. I went in looking for med-surg books, and found one textbook but no other supplemental texts. There was a fundamentals book available as well as nutrition and anatomy textbooks which I have used for pre-req courses. There were lots of big tables, which would make it a really nice place to study. I would definitely go back, but probably not for their nursing inventory. read more

My library review is for the PEOPLE who work at this library, for the convenience of its location and for the awesome SDPL app. I now exclusively use the app to request books and then when I have notification that they are in I go in and pick them up or since I'm handicap sometimes my husband will pick them up for me. Since I've lived in MM for 43 years and we are frequent library patrons all the librarians and staff seem to know us well and are so kind and helpful. This is one of the most handicap friendly libraries around and again it's the staff who make the experience of popping in and out so pleasant. I sure miss Teresita when she retired and I will be sad when Steve decides to retire too but there are so MANY amazing staff members there you will be sure to have a great interaction. read more

It's a small library like the many others that I've seen in San Diego. When you live in Mira Mesa and don't have a car, this place is a godsend. I tutored some pretty cool elementary school kids here on Mondays and Wednesdays. It's amazing that kids have the patience to study after school. My capstone group needed a place to meet up to work on our project and so we came here on a Sunday. It opened around 12:30PM and there was a crowd of people waiting outside already. Since it was our first time, we weren't sure if they had any rooms we could use as to not disturb other library patrons. The lady in front was a little confused at first telling us we have to reserve a conference room and the guy in charge of that only works M-F. But then she later realized what we were asking and directed us towards a small room past the bathrooms and book sale area. The room isn't that big - there was a long rectangular table with 8 old and uncomfortable chairs. Everything looked pretty dated. There was even an old typewriter in the room! There was another tutoring group in there so we shared the table with them. There were outlets along the wall so that was nice. However, because of its close proximity to the bathrooms, it can get pretty loud. There is free wifi, but I think it might kick you out after a certain amount of time. You can easily log back in though. They do shut down the wifi about 15 minutes before library closing time. They do have a no food and drink policy but they said they were pretty lenient on drinks - a lot of people had waters/coffees. I'm not sure if there were other rooms study groups can meet in (without having to reserve ahead of time), but if that room was the only room, you're better off meeting elsewhere. It gets a little loud at times and since there's only 8 spots, there's a good chance all of the seats might already be taken. But it does the job if you're able to find a spot. read more

Here is taxpayer money well spent! 10:30 in the morning and the place is packed with people on the catalogs, at the computers and in the stacks. There were lots of good books for sale at $1.50 cents each. Tip: Buy them at $1.50 and sell them on ebay/amazon/craigslist for $3.00. Getting a card was very easy - and - unlike Sonoma County, in San Diego County one can create a username rather than have to remember your 6 digit card number. How cool is that? read more

Decent library in Mira Mesa. The staff is friendly. It's kind of old school and such. The noise level seems a bit loud for a library.

This is one of the nicest libraries in San Diego. Sure it could be a little noisy when the reading program takes place with the kids, and maybe the bathroom isn't THAT cute, but this library is honestly the most welcoming and comfortable space to work in. It's a public library...I don't know what everyone expects, a polished bathroom with white marble, pure gold toilets, crystal sculptures of cupids? Everyone is super nice, especially the volunteers/staff there on Thursdays for Reading Buddies. Their educational programs are top notch (reading buddies, kitchen science) and personally I believe they're great experiences for kids. Regarding noise, there is literally one section for the kids and the rest of the library is so quite and peaceful. I highly suggest a visit to this library for anything from a catch up with a friend to talking trash about your neighbor. read more

It's so dirty it's absolutely disgusting! It smells like urine - I get it's a public library but I'm almost 100% sure if they requested they'd pay for a carpet clean. Homeless people everywhere - this is a place for children as well and i don't want my kid around that. Like seriously?? Much more worth to drive an additional 10-15 mins to go to a nicer library.
