This is an excelent suburban library. The place is spacious, well-lighted, adequately staffed, with plenty of comfortable seating. Unlike the city libraries, it can handle interlibrary loans. Had to make the hike to Del Mar since they issue San Diego COUNTY library cards. Quick aside, county cards get you free access to Udemy, Libby and more! They were so nice and helpful when processing our cards. They chatted with us and told us about other benefits of the card. Such a quaint library ! Just looking at the architecture makes you feel great being there. Inside the lighting is cheerful and inviting to sit there and read or work on your computer. The staff is very helpful. I had to do an interlibrary loan to get a Nolo Press book from Sacramento. I am interested in audiobooks. Their audiobook section is tiny, just two small shelves for all of fiction, nonfiction, I mean maybe only 30 titles altogether for everything. But you can have 10 renewals for 3 weeks each. Don't wait more than 28 days beyond the last allowable renewal and final due date, or they will send your account for missing items to "collections" and you cannot return the items for credit or to erase your account, cos once they send it to "collections", it is GONE from the library, and the only way to release your blocked library account, is to pay that fine, plus "collection fee". read more

But they recently expanded their hours and I decided to visit with my LOs during the summer break. IMO their kids' book selection is a hit or miss. I love their toddler and beginner reader books but not so much their early chapter books. And I think they are working on bringing back all the kids' events. Even though there were no events, they had a little scavenger hunt and a take-home craft that my kids enjoyed. Nice little library to take the kids to once in a while if not regularly! read more

I absolutely LOVEEEEEEE this library! The views are amazing. There are outside tables to read or do work outside, while looking at the ocean! They have private study rooms, masks are required due to COVID. Honestly, I respect how serious they are taking it. Masks are also available upon entry. Indoors masks required, masks optional outside. The high ceilings with sun roofs make the library feel so comfortable, and not so much like... a library. Haha. It's nice, 5/5! read more

I love this quaint library which is nestled near the ocean. It has a superb staff which is so welcoming. I enjoy the extra perks here - we all love the weekly chair yoga class that Diana teaches. She is a "first class" instructor. The book group run by Judith is held on the second Friday of each month. Because of the very interesting discussions, I walk away with so many recommendations for exciting books. I always try to attend when I am in town. Keep up the great work!!! read more

I like this small library. First off its in a beautiful, historic building, that once was a church.They have various events and activities planned. Among those are live concerts. The 2 times I've been here I've heard Bluegrass Music. I've seen H9yvib a small lot. I understand that the Library is a Polar Zone. I stumbled on this little treasure by accident. This library definitely has a smaller, old bookstore-ish charm about it. It's a great place to do some work (wifi is pretty fast, relatively quiet, and spacious tables - but # available is limited, so you'll likely need to share) and I love how there's a lot of natural light! Perfect place to be on a spring/summer day. + there's a little parking lot, so no need to circle around the streets of Del Mar. read more

You might not notice Del Mar library when you drive on Camino Del Mar. It blends in so well with the rest of the houses you might just pass by it. The building is quaint cottage house. The library doesn't have a large book selection, its on a much smaller scale. Inside and very peaceful and quite. The library does have very nice children's play section with lots of books and toys. They also offer a lovely and interactive baby story time for toddlers and infants. read more

I knocked off a star because it is really difficult to find parking. There are a few spots in the front that are 2 hour parking and several spaces in the back that are unlimited but every time I've come here I've found it hard to find parking. Overall the library is beautiful in that it is modern, new, and clean. read more

Just beautiful! It's such a pretty building in an amazing location with cozy nooks and corners. Great for kids and teens with a good selection. Del Mar is like a small village, so the librarians know everyone who comes and goes. They remember you and are so nice and helpful! I ended up just sitting and reading for an hour because I had a little time to spare between lunch and the end of school. It was so quiet and peaceful, I could have stayed all day. One of the things that caught my eye about this place was the design of this building. I've been to a few of the San Diego libraries but this one is definitely the one i admire the most aesthetically, and just as a wonderful place to visit in general. I don't know if people here on Yelp really care about this type of stuff, but I really do enjoy when a place 'feels' warm and welcoming, that kind of a feeling is hard to find nowadays and this library delivers! I also really like the neighborhood this is located in. It's near the beach and near a bunch of shops, so you can read a book and head out for some coffee and walk the beach all in the same trip. The staff here was very helpful. Perhaps a bit smaller than other places, but this is my favorite library so far. read more

I ended up stopping by the Del Mar Library (09-05-2013) simply to use the bathroom and ended up staying for almost 1/2 an hour. Upon walking up on this library you absolutely get the vibe that this library was once a 'Beach House.' The Del Mar Library is a 'Polar Zone' indicated on the door when you enter. A 'Polar Zone' is a City sponsored building in which you can come to cool off and boy did this come in handy, it was extremely hot outside. It was very refreshing to walk inside of a building with the 'A/C' blasting and not have to worry about a sales representative asking if I needed help. It is amazing how clean this building was from the foliage, to the carpets, to the lack of dust, to the bathrooms, everything looked polished, clean, neat, tidy and in order. This library was recently remodeled in the beginning of 2013 and you can tell. You can watch the renovation on the Del Mar's Library webpage, you can also donate money to ensure this library keeps the doors open and continues providing a great service to the community. The Del Mar Library is located a stone throw away from the Ocean on Camino Del Mar. If you are unfamiliar with Del Mar, CA Camino Del Mar is their version of Main Street USA. The Del Mar Library offers 'free' parking on the street and a private lot located behind the library. No matter where you grew up walking into this library takes you back in time. If you are looking for a library to come, relax and be in the peace and quiet you have found it in the Del Mar Library. The Del Mar Library has some great services they offer. This library has 'free' music; if you request a book that is located at another library within the San Diego library system they will have it delivered and advise you when it arrives. The DML offers 'free' Wi-Fi service. This location also provides 'plethora' of 'free' magazines & newspapers (I would just like to know if you know what it means to have a plethora. I would not like to think that someone would tell someone else he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora). The staff working the day of my visit could not have been any nicer / friendlier. I wish I lived closer to this library. I plan on making sure I stop and visit this location each and every time I am in the area. If you happen to be in the area make sure you stop and pay this library a visit, you will not be disappointed you did. This library is closed on 'Mondays.' read more

It's an alright place to study, there's only four tables excluding the odd tiny one in the children's section. The only issue here is that much of the parking in this area is limited to an hour and a half, which is longer than most people would stay at a library, but consider another library for long study sessions, or getting out and moving your car around. read more

Such a great most of the time quiet quaint place to grab a book or movie or just hang and read a magazine. Today was very noisy. I think they had some class going on and lots of screaming kids. Not the norm. Usually I feel like i have to whisper in there. They have a few parking spaces, nice staff, easy to find books (small) a small kid section, computers for public use. I love this library. Yes, it's small. Yes, it doesn't have a whole lot of room to store a large collection of books. However, it makes up for its smaller size and volume in a lot of ways. First of all, because it's a part of the San Diego County library system, you can always request to have a book already available within the system (at any of the physical libraries) to be delivered to it for pick up. Thus, the selection available is a whole lot more extensive than you would expect... as long as you have the patience to wait for the book (or item to arrive). Second, because it has access to the San Diego County library system, you also have access to their music selection, which is pretty impressive. Third, the children's area is AWESOME. It's full of dolls, toys, and puzzles that your little one can play with, and it's set slightly apart from the rest of the library (in the same building, of course) so he or she can be contently loud and playful. Because it's not the easiest of the San Diego County libraries to find, I'd imagine this contributes to how much less crowded it is than other libraries in the area... which is a good thing because some of the other libraries (i.e. Encinitas, which is also a great library in its own way) get very crowded and busy during the day. read more

This must be the cutest little library that could ever fit in my pocket... though that might be the problem. I love the quaintness of this place, not to mention that I am sitting there right now typing away on its wi-fi. It's open til 8 and is relatively close to UCSD if that's where you're coming from. The only problem is that since its so small, there are only about 3 tables. Fortunately, i dont think there are a lot of people waiting in line to get into this place,so if you're looking for a small country style library (what an odd request, though) this place is perfect! read more

It's very cute and quaint. Smaller library not many tables/areas to study and no private cubicles besides the computers so wouldn't recommend studying here. I came to this location today because this location was open until 8pm on a Thursday and wanted to study longer as most close at 6pm. There were children running around all over the place. Because of atmosphere probably better just to come in to grab a book, or for a nice little break from the heat, or kid friendly but not as adult friendly. read more

I told them I had no other time to bring it and they didn't care. Great job protecting democracy! Rude, idiotic staff with no common sense or decency. My experience with this library is on Wednesday mornings during the pre-school story time and craft. The woman who runs it is really great. She keeps the kids engaged. Though the library is small it devotes quite a big space for kids. There are computers, toys and games to keep the kids busy. I've also checked out quite a few books during our visits. I would recommend the Wednesday storyline if you have a pre-schooler at home. read more

I've been coming here for 20+ years and the Del Mar Library is just a great place for kicking back with a cup of coffee (Starbucks and Zumbar cart within a block), a good book, and soaking in the atmosphere of the beautifully-restored historic building. Built as a church in 1914, it retains a feeling of peace and of another time. DMLib is one of the smallest branches in the San Diego County Library system, but still has well-stocked shelves, computers in both the main and children's rooms, comfortable seating, toddler story time, and dozens of innovative programs and services, including regular concerts. The staff is warm and welcoming, always willing to assist with technology or help you find that special book. Pet and child friendly. Wonderful selection of quality books to buy from the Friends of the Del Mar Library kiosk and 2-3 big Boutique Book Sales each year. Two blocks from the beach! It's part of the San Diego County library system so one can request books from any library in the county -- no fee for ILL; -- if you can't find what you're looking for you can click on what's called "Circuit and request books from the various colleges and universities, as well as from the San Diego City library system. Furthermore, as long as no one has requested the book you may be using you can renew as many times as necessary. The staff is very helpful; if you've requested a book and it's come in, but ylu can't get it by the pick-up date, the staff will extend the hold date for you as long as no one else has a request for it. (Or maybe check it our to you I've lived in Los Angeles and that city's library system does not have these patron-friendly features. Oh -- and there are other library systems in the state that have joined a consortium of which the S an Diego County system is a part, so you can request books from those libraries. in that case renewal policies are those of the originating library -- but there i s still no ILL fee. I"ve received books from as far as northern California. As a volunteer with Bookshare.org. I'm in contact with people from all over the county and no other library system seems to have such a wonderful ILL policy read more
