I can explain everything wrong with this place in a single sentence: "They are all about maximizing profits." For example, if you find yourself waiting a long time for an appointment, it's because the place is run like a shopping mall: The more people who enter the doors, the better, because the more people you entice in the door, the more money you are likely to earn. I had to wait months for an appointment. Then, it took 3 weeks to get my glasses. The doctor screwed up the prescription, so I had to wait for another appointment. Then I had to wait another 3 weeks for my glasses. By the time I got the prescription fixed TWO MONTHS had passed. When I complained that two months was too long, the reaction was a shrug. They really don't care. They can't do anything about it because if they prioritize patient care, they will earn less money. They also spam their "patients" with advertising coupons. HURRY! YOU CAN HAVE THIS SURGICAL PROCEDURE FOR $500 OFF. (I put "patients" in quotation marks because they don't really have patients. They have customers.") Yes, a medical office spams its "patients" with slick ads and coupons for surgical procedures. When I pointed out to a supervisor that the place seems to be run with a corporate mentality (increase profits), rather than a medical office that prioritizes patient care, he said, "It IS a corporation." One star for this office. Two stars if this is simply what medicine in this country is coming to. read more

Dr Amir is fantastic. Had cateracts surgery in both eyes. Best experience. But don't buy glasses from them. Bought 2 pair, spent well over $1000 and got ghosted after the lenses were calculated incorrectly. Said they'd rush the fix, before xmas. Never heard back. Left them a message a week and a half ago. Nothing. Couldn't get a human on the phone. Finally left 2 messages jan 14 and they called me back FULL OF EXCUSES! TOO BUSY TO ALL ME BACK BECAUSE OF XYZ, AND ON AND ON. Not acceptable. I was referred to Dr. Amir by my optometrist Dr. Ali at Costco . They called me to setup an appointment. Before even confirming my name they asked what insurance I had. I told them Anthem Blue Cross and Medicare. They then asked for my Medicare number. I told them I didn't have it available at the moment, They said they would not make an appointment without my Medicare number. I then checked the Yelp reviews and was glad that I wouldn't be going there. read more

One month later I had an 8 o'clock appt. When I went in the tech took me to a room and did his thing and left. I have been a patient at Pacific Eye for over 5 years.i was fortunate to have found Dr Hulburd . I found him caring and listened to all that was said. However, my appointment on January 6: 2026 was unusual. As I sat on a chair leaning my forehead and chin into a machine in order to have a picture of my retina taken I began to experience back pain. I needed to move to a chair in the nearby waiting room and rest for 5 to 10 minutes. a staff person entered the waiting room and was not happy I was there. she went and brought Dr Hulburd to the waiting room. I felt someone opened Pandora box as the began lecturing me about leaving the area where I had the procedure done. As a registered nurse I was surprised that not one asked me how I felt. I was made to feel I did something wrong. needless to say it was not a good feeling appointment. read more

My eye started hurting and I could tell I had an eye infection. This was on a Thursday and of course no one was opened. I called first thing Friday morning and was given a 1:30 appointment same day with Dr. Class. Was so grateful to get in as infection was now in both eyes. Hector called me in and took the necessary information. I was coughing and he asked if I would like some water and I said yes. Was very appreciative as I have been sick and was wearing a mask. Never met Dr. Class before but he was nice, efficient and informative. My only complaint, was between Hector taking info and the Dr. showing up about 1/2 hour later. But maybe due to the fact they had to squeeze me in. Today is Saturday, just 1 day after starting the eye drops, what a difference, feel so much better. read more

I am not a regular "writer of reviews"; however, my experience with PAC Eye was very troubling. My purpose is not to "bad mouth" anyone at PAC Eye, but I do think it is important future patients do not receive the treatment I received. My experience with communication was horrible lacking. I made numerous phone calls which were never answered, plus my numerous voice messages were also never answered (front desk and optometry department). The doctor had told me at my appointment that if I needed more contacts to carry me over until my surgery to ask at the optometry section of their office to get samples, if available, or place an order. I finally went to the office in person, but they never followed through. I was scheduled for cataract surgery at my initial appointment, but trouble continued. I showed up to the surgery center, checked in, but then learned as I was going into surgery, that they did not have an anesthesiologist at the surgery center that day. This mixup was because PAC had not told the surgery center I required general anesthesia. I had told the doctor and schedulers multiple times I cannot have the typical "twilight" sedation. I had already scheduled my work breaks for all of the required appointments before and after surgery. All of my waiting for a date, completed surgery prep, etc., had been wasted. We drove directly to PAC office to cancel any further care, and the surgery coordinator simply sat with her back to us, shrugged, and said "Oh, ok". She took no responsibility for herself, PAC Eye or even said she was sorry. (We did receive our reimbursement promptly.) I am sad that the doctors, who are surely not at fault in this situation, are represented by such poor administrative personnel practices. I started over with a different opthomology office and have scheduled cataract surgery. Of course, it is several months out. read more

I am required to take a very specific color blindness test for my employer. I made an appointment with their office because they told me that they absolutely had that test available. Day of the appointment came along and they called me a hour before to tell me that they don't have it. I had to wait a month for the appointment and now I only have a week to find another optometrist with the test I need. the staff were staff were extremely rude during every phone call. the worst part is I might not get the job because of their lies and incompetence. Thank you for screwing me out of the best shot at a career I've ever had. It's too late to apologize. I was lied to for you to make a profit. read more

My vision saga with Wm. McRee at Pacific Eye, San Luis Obispo began in December 2024 when I changed to a local clinic after having my eye care in Sacramento area for the past 4 decades. I explained to Dr. McRee that I was having some morning cloudiness in my (mono-visioned) reading eye. I was given a complete eye exam and it was recommended that I needed to consider cataract surgery for both eyes. I asked to what degree on the 1-4 rating scale my cataracts fell into. He refused to give me a number. I had my reading eye cataract surgery on April 23, 2025. I had my distance eye cataract surgery on May 14, 2025. I experienced severe ultra-light sensitivity following the second cataract surgery. The Photophobia was acute--my eyes watering and my needing to wear dark sunglasses inside and outside during all my waking hours. This condition persists now 7 months after my cataract surgeries. At my eye exam AFTER my second cataract surgery, Dr. McRee informed me that I had a pre-existing condition in my cornea called Fuchs Dystrophy AND that cataract surgery can exacerbate those ultra-light sensitivity symptoms I was having. How negligent it is that Dr. McRee didn't inform me about the Fuchs Dystrophy and possible complications BEFORE doing the cataract surgeries! My cornea was swollen and I had to have DSEK corneal surgery on September 10, 2025 with Dr. Jawad Ahmad at Pacific Eye. To date, now December 3, 2025, I am still suffering from the ultra-light sensitivity (Photophobia) with no relief in sight. In my research on Fuchs Dystrophy, that condition can cause temporary cloudiness in vision which was the symptom I reported upon my first visit with Dr. McRee in December 2024. It's likely that I didn't even need cataract surgery because I got the cornea specialist to look in my record as to the rating scale (1-4) that Dr. McRee gave my cataracts: rated 1.5. I would not recommend Dr. McRee at this practice. Negligent! read more

A special thanks to Chris, the medical assistant in SLO. I was in severe pain waiting for my appointment when Chris saw me in the waiting room and took the time to take me back to the room and get me comfortable and ready for the Doctor. I wish there was more caring people like him. He was working for a differnet doctor then I was scheduled to see and he went out of his way to take me back and make me feel much better. This exceptional person needs to be recognized for his service and deserves a raise as you don't come across such caring people too often. At this appointment, Dr Horne, was extremely knowledgeable, ansewred my questions, most before I had to ask, put a band-aid contact on my eye for comfort and I felt no pain what so ever when others have tried the same process and did not come close to placing the contact fast, efficient and with no pain. These two gentleman made my experience so much better as I came in with a scratch on my eye that was causing excrutiating pain and they made me fell soo much better. THey were so caring for a person that was in extreme pain. This office in SLO is a must go to for a caring staff and doctors, true proffesionals. read more

I think the doctors are probably pretty good but the wait time is unacceptable. It's a bit like an eye factory. They're pretty good at getting you in a room but then you wait forever. They don't respect your time at all. On top of that, the assistants hurry you through questions and then leave you to wait staring at the walls. It is not a relaxing atmosphere for sure. I've been coming here for years, you think I'd learn, today I waited 40 minutes in a room and finally walked out and told reception I wasn't coming back, no reason to reschedule my appointment. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences for the most part with Dr Amir and his staff. He was very approachable, friendly, and personable during each of my routine visits and eye exams. I do miss coming to this location. Unfortunately, I have moved from the area since and am no longer a patient of his. My last visit I had a bad experience with the front door lady, who was screening visitors with covid questionnaires (she was hispanic and late 20s possibly, I don't recall her name). Since I am a Registered Nurse I had routine COVID tests and when this lady at the front asked if I had a covid test done recently, I told her I did, although I had been negative prior and no symptoms. I had waited for this appointment for 3 months, and because I had a COVID test recently done, I was turned away by this lady with no remorse just a "you'll have to call back and schedule another time, bye!" Discouraged, I am back home and calling the office to reschedule my appointment as suggested by the front door lady, but the scheduler on the phone told me to come back since I am a healthcare worker. I immediately get back in line at the front door and I observe the same lady courteous to all these other people giving them big smiles, big greetings and I get to the front of the line she gives me a blank stare and offers a condescending "HELLO." I told her I was invited to come back since I am a healthcare worker, but she didn't buy it and had to make a few trips inside with the front desk to verify I was for real. Ultimately, she let me in. Perhaps this was a case, where I was judged too much by my exterior appearance (everyone else was treated gracefully was an elderly lady or woman with a child standing in line). read more

I wish I had looked at Dr. Merrill's reviews before making an appointment. He entered the room and started arguing with staff members about information they had entered into the computer. He then ordered the ophthalmic tech to re-refract me. The also ill-tempered tech argued back that he had a pre-op patient to attend to. When I shared with Dr. Merrill my fears about getting transportation to and from surgery he looked at me coldly and said, "It can be done. It can be done." End of conversation. One reviewer said Dr. Merrill responded defensively to everything the patient asked or said. Another reviewer wrote, "Dr. Merrill is arrogant and impersonal. After keeping me waiting for almost an hour past my appt time, he rushed into the exam room, never introduced himself, did a cursory exam of my eyes and concluded there was nothing he would do to correct my vision problem resulting from cataract surgery. Why, I asked. Because he didn't feel we had a good rapport." I don't think Dr. Merrill respects women or senior citizens and their concerns, needs, and opinions. Maybe it is time for Dr. Merrill to retire and his staff to move on to jobs at which they can thrive and be happy. read more
