I…read morealso had a horrible experience and after seeing his associates in his office for follow up visits for one year and being referred back to the retinal specialist (who said I didn't have a retinal problem and to return to Abroms). I finally got an appointment with him recently to ask why I was continuing to see distortion on one eye. He got very upset and told me I was not accepting the fact that nothing could be done to improve my vision. And all I asked was what was the problem. And since I'm 78 yrs old, he continued to belittle me saying I should be happy I do not have any glaucoma complications like so many other older p have. He forgot I never had an abnormal eye pressure and had been on drops to prevent a sudden closing of my narrow duct on my other eye prescribed by the previous opthomologist . So I've never had glaucoma to have complications. He said I have 20/40,50 vision. I cannot read small or even with magnification as the blurriness is worst. I also cannot see highway signs until they are very close. Nor judge depth. Vertical objects are bent and wavy. I must now look into magnification aids for the blind. If you do go see him please take a family member that will be a witness and not allow you to be made so insignificant.

I'm just a Chihuahua of a person who freaks out at everything haha). She and another staff member helped me come to, and Dr. Parreira was so, so, SO kind and patient and comforting. She got me water and cold towels, and she made sure I felt completely fine before she helped me get back up. I would've been so horribly embarrassed if she hadn't reacted so calmly and sweetly, and we made light-hearted conversation after that helped me get my bearings again. She is a perfect combination of professional, accommodating, knowledgeable, informative, helpful, funny, and relatable. They were even willing to make accommodations so my boyfriend could pick me up if my car needed to stay overnight! They informed me that they had a contract with the company and that it wouldn't be a problem to be seen. I came in a few days later, filled out all the paper work, handed over my insurance information and went into the back to have a basic eye exam. Not 60 seconds after the assistant dilates my eyes, she comes in and says that she regrets to inform me that they don't take my insurance. She says that it'll be around $80 if I want to be seen without insurance. I am wary of this at first for obvious reasons, but I concede as my eyes are already in a sensitive condition and I didn't really want to drive immediately after dilation. We go up to the desk and talk a little more...she ups the price to $120. I just leave. This place is unprofessional and unorganized. Don't risk it.

I actually started going to SLO OC when Dr. Swanson was there and stuck with them when Parreira took over. The whole staff is very accommodating and personable, and the exams are thorough. They also have the option of doing a retinal scan ($40 I think) which is cool. The office has a nice layout and they have a pretty good selection of frames/sunglasses. Another thing I liked and this is a major thing for me with ANY doctor is that they didn't try to sell me random stuff- I was given samples and they didn't try to make me feel guilty when I went to Lens Crafters instead to get glasses (my insurance owns LC's so it was cheaper). Exam lasts maybe 45 min, depending on how much you talk....I like to talk a lot so it was probably more like an hour for me.

They told her they had the best specialists and there was nothing else left for her to do except go blind. After some deep research and prayer we got my friend an appointment with the chief surgeon at the Shiley Eye Institute in San Diego, Dr. Weinreb. They didn't even need her records and did all of their own testing and did surgery the next week! She didn't go blind and her eyesight is improving weekly! A miracle! I chose to see a doctor, because the PA didn't have an appointment for a month, and I regret it. Quick summary is that the doctor asked what was going on, and I said I had a few things to discuss. She immediately cut me off and said that the chart said I was there for a shoulder related concern, and that if there was more it should be discussed at an annual visit. When I scheduled, I told the receptionist I had a few things to address; so I let the doctor know, and asked, so you're telling me I need to schedule another appointment to talk about more than my shoulder?! She then begrudgingly listened to my other concerns. But the entire interaction felt cold, dismissive, and rushed. I will go back to PCP, but never to this new doctor if I can help it. I'll stick with the amazing PA I know and trust. I wasn't asking for a lot of time, for the record. My health concerns are simple, and took less than 30 seconds to explain. If the doctor had any true concern for her patients, she could have asked a few probing questions and had me out of there in just as much time as she took to dismiss me and try to get me to schedule another visit. I rarely go to a doctor, mostly because of experiences like this. I would like to explore ways to feel better, but not at the expense of having to deal with a dismissive doctor who has forgotten that she is working FOR her patients. Patients pay for care, she is not providing a free service.
