My family sent my cousins and I there the three of us grew up making friends here and really learning a lot. The area is safe and close to the public library. Over the years though the school expanded heavily to accommodate the growing community of forest hills. The school it self changed a lot. My younger brother (now 16) had been sent to private school after attending this school for two years. My parents say it's not the same. How ever this is my opinion and I feel that it was honestly GREAT!

The tutor who supplies extra help and support to the students who need it is the best I have ever had the privilege of my child working with! And I use her in the summer for extra tutoring. My child is an honer student and I owe it all to her attending St. Helen's! The faculty do a great job teaching these children and many make the honer roll or principals list. The teachers don't make enough money for the great job they do!! The school is very clean and there are no foreseen problems with Bullies. If there is a problem with students it is addressed right away. I wish I had put my children here when they first started school in kindergarten l think it would have avoided much heartache my family went through because we chose the other Catholic school in Howard Beach first. I attend there church across the street and I really feel we are a family in St. Helens. All children are never neglected of extra help they need. The only thing I do care for is there are Non Catholics that go to school here and I do not understand that concept. And I don't think it should be allowed. I wish St. Helens went to 12th grade! My children would happily be attending.

The good thing is next to a commercial center that owners may not mind using few of the available spots. Spanish community comprised the neighborhood and was not surprised that the mass proper was in Spanish language. The church ambiance is so beautiful, old fashioned architecture, old standard church size with beautiful decor. The music that could be played by the player from an organ sounds beautifully... it flows on the air especially coming from the balcony. The attending priest was so humble and at point with his lecture. Short but meaningful service.

Our Lady of Mercy grammer school had a high enrollment when I was a student there for eight years,…read moregraduating in 1985. Classes were small enough that all students received individual attention and the teachers made every effort to ensure the student body would be ready for the high school years that were fast approaching. In terms of size, each grade one through eight had enough students that there were two classes for each grade level, so perhaps fourty children per grade. Life was quite enjoyable as a student at OLM as I attended classes with many of the kids I grew up with in the Forest Hills area. Homework and some classroom work could be done collectively, pranks were sprung occasionally. The dress code was shirt and tie for the boys from the from first grade eventually dress jackets made their way into the required daily wear. This set a nice precedent for our future in the professional world and it was really no extra effort to gear up into our daily regalia. English and math were the strongest subject areas in OLM's curricula in my opinion, not to suggest science, history or any other subjects were lacking in any way. But once in high school, I felt I had a excellent foundation and a bit of a better start on other students from other schools. As it was a Catholic school we had events during a portion of the school year, like the May Crowning and a few others. The Sacraments of communion and confirmation although preformed in church, were learned about in school. It was not called theology, perhaps it was called religion, the name is currently evading me. Children grew through and thrived in their Our Lady of Mercy years in academics, Catholic faith and very close bonds with friends. In fact my friends in grammer school are my closest friends today, some twenty eight years later.
