Ahhhhhh childhood memories. One of the greatest schools. When I was a child the school system in my…read moreneighborhood was so good. Many parents didn't even think of private school. My family sent my cousins and I there the three of us grew up making friends here and really learning a lot. The area is safe and close to the public library. Over the years though the school expanded heavily to accommodate the growing community of forest hills. The school it self changed a lot. My younger brother (now 16) had been sent to private school after attending this school for two years. My parents say it's not the same. How ever this is my opinion and I feel that it was honestly GREAT!

Our Lady of Mercy grammer school had a high enrollment when I was a student there for eight years,…read moregraduating in 1985. Classes were small enough that all students received individual attention and the teachers made every effort to ensure the student body would be ready for the high school years that were fast approaching. In terms of size, each grade one through eight had enough students that there were two classes for each grade level, so perhaps fourty children per grade. Life was quite enjoyable as a student at OLM as I attended classes with many of the kids I grew up with in the Forest Hills area. Homework and some classroom work could be done collectively, pranks were sprung occasionally. The dress code was shirt and tie for the boys from the from first grade eventually dress jackets made their way into the required daily wear. This set a nice precedent for our future in the professional world and it was really no extra effort to gear up into our daily regalia. English and math were the strongest subject areas in OLM's curricula in my opinion, not to suggest science, history or any other subjects were lacking in any way. But once in high school, I felt I had a excellent foundation and a bit of a better start on other students from other schools. As it was a Catholic school we had events during a portion of the school year, like the May Crowning and a few others. The Sacraments of communion and confirmation although preformed in church, were learned about in school. It was not called theology, perhaps it was called religion, the name is currently evading me. Children grew through and thrived in their Our Lady of Mercy years in academics, Catholic faith and very close bonds with friends. In fact my friends in grammer school are my closest friends today, some twenty eight years later.

We have two children at this school now. One is 8, the other is 5…read more Great stuff about this school I wrote about previously is still true -- small number of students for the 5 teachers on hand means the kids get a ton of attention that is exactly tailored to their own stage/age/interests and helps them move along a lot faster on the topics they are good at, and move well on the topics where they have difficulty -- there is a great mix of ages and styles around, and the mixed ages actually work together on stuff. Kids learn and see the good examples of kids 1-2 years older and that really motivates them to advance. "I want to do that!" At the same time, no stigma if you are a little behind on something and working with some other age groups -- Very little homework. It means the school time is working. Our kids are advancing quickly and doing a ton -- but teachers don't have to push off all the hard work to the parents in the evenings. There is tons of productive time in school since "classroom management" doesn't chew up half the time. What attracted me here, as a cognitive science PhD from Stanford myself, was the stellar intellectual grounding for the school its founder (Columbia PhD and former faculty) and multiple veteran and PhD educators on staff.

My child completed grade three at QPS this week, and upon reflecting on his last day of the…read moresemester, I'm motivated to write a few comments on this school. In the hallway on the last day of 2018-18 school (presentations day), some of the other dads and I compared notes and we found agreement in the following factors of QPS: 1. All our kids, without exception, love their school. Not like... love. Every dad in the group shared that our kids have never once tried to get out of going to school in the morning. Not a single time. Our kids love their school, tell us they love their school, and love going to school. This factor, if it were the only positive one, is extraordinary. 2. All our kids spend their school days learning "stuff", like kids in schools everywhere. However our QPS kids have all developed a strong ability to effortlessly synthesize all the stuff, and offer considered opinions to questions or topics that bridge multiple areas of knowledge. We agreed that our kids *think* first, and then *speak*. 3. The staff of QPS is uniformly excellent. From the principal to the PE coach, the TAs to the specialist learning consultants, the QPS teaching and learning team is literally amazing. QPS teachers enter into partnerships with our kids. Our kids feel validated in their individuality, and motivated to learn. My kid has been saying since his kindergarten year that he never wants to leave QPS. As a parent in today's NYC, I am deeply grateful that QPS offers my child such a safe, happy, inspiring place to grow into the confident and kind young man that he's clearly on track to become.

I had an exceptional time at TMLA. Yes the Principal can be very cold, judgemental and honestly a…read moredownright bitch... she certainly does seem to judge people on the way they look (weight) and how they dress (fashion). But she is the only person in this entire school who ever acted that way, and she is not involved in the daily lives of students so it never negatively impacted myself or any of the girls I knew. Every other teacher, dean and student was accepting, willing to help at any time and never once in 4 years did I experience or witness an instance of a teacher "screaming" at a student in the hallways, locker room or "degrading" anyone anywhere for that matter. My best friend (and sister for life) was also heavyset and she never had any instances of being judged by the teachers for being that way. I am very sorry for anyone who has been a rape victim but I also would not expect a high school teacher to be able to "spot the signs" of a rape victim simply because they are women, that is what counselors and therapists are for. My own experience at Mary Louis was wonderful! Yes there are "cliques" but you can expect that in any high school, whether all girl or co-ed, that is honestly just part of the high school experience everywhere unfortunately. If you're able to say that your school had no "cliques" then you're saying that because you were in one and therefore couldn't see that they existed. You only notice cliques when you're not in one! Even with the cliques I never witnessed any girls being bullied in any mean or hurtful way. Normal high school name calling and "catty" behavior maybe. But nothing that would be considered very hurtful. Even with that the deans, teachers and even other students were very quick to put an end to it. I knew three girls (one was my former friend and the other two I knew in passing) who were kicked out for being "bullies". I found the teachers to be phenomenally helpful, the courses were challenging depending on the subject matter and the teacher (it may be time for a few of the teachers to retire, they've kind of "expired"). The college preparation was incredible ...this is the huge gold star I have to give to TMLA. My first two years at college have been almost "easy" compared to the work I was doing at TMLA. I am so very proud to be a graduate of The Mary Louis Academy and I really do feel incredibly sorry for those who feel they had a bad experience for whatever reason and missed out on all the wonderful opportunities TMLA gave to me and my classmates. I am tremendously grateful that my parents were able to send me to TMLA. It was worth every single penny and I will do my best to pay them back by being the best, most independent and giving woman of dignity that I can be. That is the true legacy and product of TMLA.
