I like the security. Despite the place opening around 11, it wasn't actually busy until 1:30. There was barely anyone there between 11-12:30ish. The music is all older so we didn't really vibe with it because we're all 21. We tried to wait it out and see but it just wasn't giving. Everybody just stands around and watches the few ppl who did dance, so it's really weird. If you're just going to hold up the wall, why go a dance club? Another thing, if you have asthma or don't like the smell of smoking, don't go here. They're allowed to smoke anything! We did get a cool Uber out of this though! read more

I visited this nightclub after our bridal party left the casino. To be honest all I vividly remember is the smoke filled rooms and it felt like we were definitely over the max occupancy, despite all that, the music was great and we danced the night away. For whatever reason, my friends decided it would be a good idea to see what life is like on the other side of the river one fateful Friday night, so off to Oz we went. As soon as we rolled up, I was like, what ... what what what is this place. From the outside Oz looks like a crappy abandoned warehouse where Det. Benson might find a dead body on an episode of Law & Order SVU. I did not want to go in. Before we were allowed inside, we had to stand in line to get patted down by a security guard and walk through a metal detector. I actually appreciated this extra safety measure, because I knew no one inside had any weapons, which is more than I can say for pretty much anywhere else I go on a given day. I don't get why everyone is saying not to go here and that it's so dangerous and your night will result in death, etc etc. It's basically safer than the airport! (Outside is a different story.) I also was pleasantly surprised to find that Oz is actually a night club (quality: debatable). There's not too much of that in St. Louis. Oz was super big inside, though incredibly crammed on the dance floor. There was a big room with a bar where you entered that had slightly more space, including some sitting areas, that led down a few stairs to the actual dance area. Like most clubs, the dance area had a lower floor and several raised stages where people who like attention can go shake their groove thang. The floor was FILTHY. It looked like the worst of public restroom floors, with black sludge all over from the crap from people's shoes that got mixed up with spilled drinks, napkins, cigarette butts (oh yeah, indoor smoking is allowed), etc. Take home point: Do not wear heels. It is so slippery here, you will for sure break your neck and die if you do. Speaking of dress code, if you're a dude, don't be wearing white T-shirts or you will get turned away at the door. We like to keep it classy here at Oz, OBV. I should also mention it was packed human to human. It was more miserably crowded than taking the bus in China. It got so sweaty and humid in there, I thought I was going to get heatstroke. Trying to get water from the bar takes an eternity. Also, blatant pot smoking. And then when I thought this experience couldn't get any more batshit insane, I saw a vagina. A M****F*** VAGINA. Like, just out in the open. I saw one. This place is bananas. All in all, the club played good music (mostly hip hop and other danceable beats), had cool neon lights going on and a diverse mix of people spanning from seemingly 16 - late 30s, so it was a fun place to be. Oz on any night, but 19+ year old allowed Sunday, is actually not that bad early. The crowd & music is diverse enough to be interesting. Roaming around the huge multiple level dance floor surrounded by staged seating and 4 bars I realized this is just another nightclub, but the party does not start till about 1 AM. After 3 AM, the Oz is the only nightclub in the area open and gets overpacked with dancers and the people not wanting to go home, band oriented Pops or a stripclub. The place has a rentable VIP lounge (I went for after party for Inimical Drive http://www.myspace.com/inimicaldrive) with separate DJ & music (usually house/techno). The third area is a large pavilion covered patio. I have been here when they had a third DJ and sound system outdoors, but not tonight. Now the weird... Illinois indoor smoking ban forces smokers onto the patio so do not go outside for "fresh air". All the drink mixes are computer controled so do not bother complaining about the mix. After 3 AM playing guess the drug being used by about 10% of the crowd is always fun, but they are the small minority (for those not used to old school club scenes this can be FREAKY). Man where do I start? First of I just got to say this place was beyond gross. I went here for me and my friend pepper's 24th bday to have fun and let loose! But honestly the only thing that was letting loose were the coochies that were hanging out of some of the female specimens that walked through the door. Girl with a burgundy tight ass dress with her little friends had the worst stench and still their little cooters got in, meanwhile the two gentlemen behind us couldn't get in cause one was wearing a hat and the other was wearing all white.. I get the dress code is mostly strict for men but damn. Then not to mention the bouncer at the door was rude as fuck, he sent those two boys on their way and told them to basically fuck off, and I seen him smack a girls ass on her way in. He was doing too much you could see the taser sticking out of his back pocket, and it looked like he's used it multiple times. You gotta be careful, the men that go there are very creepy you can tell from the jump of the place. The minute you walk in you gotta scrub up against sweaty people that have no manners and just push past you, honestly they stink like they've been bumping uglies at the center of the dance floor. The whole time all you can smell is weed and coochie. The bar wasn't as bad, that's where we mostly hung out, cause the dance floor was packed. People were rolling their weed up everywhere, multiple men asking if you want to take a hit off their blunt. I wore heels bad idea, everywhere in there is gross on the floor like slick slime. I saw some poo on the floor in the bathroom and I gagged. Literally ended my experience! Don't go there! It must be all the drunks getting kicked out of Pops or PT's. Too bad Club Buca closed because I would love to write a scathing review of that piece of crap too... Anyway, there is nothing redeeming about this place. I know when you are impaired at 3 in the morning and still HAVE to party you will think "Let's go to the OZ!" But you really should be thinking "Let's go home and go to bed where I won't die!" or "Let's go to Denny's where I (probably) won't be robbed!". I tend to go to areas people "warn me" not to go. Oz was on that list. Rest assured that only tipped of my curiosity even more. This past Friday seemed like an opportune time to go. My friends Neichole, Mo, Ali and I had just got done dancing at Pepper Lounge with Todd H. and his friend. Neichole and I were still in the dancing kind of mood whereas the boys Todd H. went their own directions. Neichole had been a few times before. She explained to me that the crowd is "mixed." Hmmm.....mixed? Mixed meaning what exactly? The minute we got their I knew I had rolled up into a club with some fabulous "flava". Which for me, is just fine. I roll with all kinds and all types with no discrimination. However, this might be the type of place a person would go if they are uncomfortable being the minority racially. Neichole and I got in line waiting to get in with the rest of everyone else. The line progressed slowly, and we went through what seemed to me to be security clearance at the airport. I was alright with the wait though. Better safe than sorry. Plus they conduct wardrobe checks. If the security didn't think you dressed the part, they weren't going to let you in. This strictly applied to the guys because when we got in there, some of the girls were wear bras and only cut off jean shorts. There was not much left for the imagination. I mean they were wearing stuff I wouldn't even try on in a dressing room at a clothing store. Proud of their assets and 3 sizes too small, more power to them. The dance floor was PACKED! The dj was spinning rap hits, old school, and even threw in some Blink 182 at some point. With two huge screen flat screens projecting the music videos, I thought it was pretty neat. The place is huge! They have a VIP area that looks pretty nice too. Upon entering the dance floor, Neichole got picked up by a guy almost immediately where I was left to fend for myself. I made my way to the dancing booth above the dance floor where I was with some other girls who were already up there dancing. I just did my thing and had a blast. When I did get on the dance floor for about 5 minutes, I was swormed by short dudes who were thug-o-licious. These guys were shorter than me, and I'm 5'5. Uh uh, I got back up in the dancing booth area where I remained. It was fun nonetheless though. Neichole eventually spotted me after 30 minutes of her being MIA, and joined me. I didn't drink while I was there or that entire night prior to going. I really wanted to soak up the experience sober, plus it seemed to be the safer option with the first go-around at Oz and only the two of us going to it. Ole girl should have stuck with me the whole time! I like Oz. I will go again, and hopefully next time with a larger group. I came here on a Friday night at 1am and stayed until about 4am. It was fun, unpretentious, and safe. People were pretty friendly. It's easy to start up a conversation with anybody. Look, I see the rants on Yelp, but c'mon people, this is St. Louis. Specifically, it's east of the river. This ain't Paris, London, Tokyo, New York or even Chicago. I've clubbed in all those cities. I'm actually an old-school house head in his late 30s from Chicago where I was born, raised, and lived until about a year ago. This is St. Louis y'all. If you're looking for a place to see and be seen, Oz is not the spot. But then again, there is no place to see and be seen in St. Louis. Ain't nobody want to see you and ain't nobody famous that would want to be seen here. However, if you want to dance and have fun in a safe environment with other people who just want to kick it, this is the spot. I don't know about drink prices because I don't drink when I dance. Cover price was five bucks and that sounds pretty damn reasonable. Also, I liked the fact that it was a diverse crowd. Predominately black but here's a secret for all you sheltered and privileged white folk: black people are far more accepting of white folk than you are of them. I'm not black. I'm not white either. I just observe. I've also dated women from all races. From my experience--and again, this is just if you want to have fun dancing--you're better off in a black crowd than a white one because there's less judging of others going on so people are less self-conscious. And women, just accept the fact that all men of all races want to lay down some pipe, but you know, we want to have fun getting there. You can reject us after dancing with us a bit. The Oz accomplishes what it sets out to be: a decent fun time when the bars on the west side of the river close. The crowd is mixed, the music is a blend, and it's just generally somewhere fun to go. They have adequete security and do not put up with "East Boogie" foolishness; I've never felt unsafe there. The Emerald Room (their VIP area) is (usually) worth the extra $. They have top-notch DJs and are open later. The Emerald crowd is a bit older as well. The room has a more upscale feel and if I as taking a date to Oz, I'd go here rather than the general club area. I've been to the Oz many times and while not always a "great" time, it's at least interesting people-watching. read more

Bartenders were doing a good job at managing a busy bar on a Friday night (we went at about 1:30am) especially because the $15 cover charge includes a free drink. BUT the male clientele were awful. Men were constantly grabbing at me from all sides when all I wanted to do was dance with another female friend (and really, we did our best to avoid them). They grabbed the back of my neck, my shoulders, tried to rip our hands apart to take mine, or snatched my hand while I was walking past. I felt so uncomfortable and on-guard all night. I never buy drinks here seeing as though they are way too high and extremely watered down. This place does have potential, really spacey and never too crowded (except on Sundays). So, I will start off with saying I like a lot about the Oz. Yes, it is an intense place. Yes, it is a little sketchy. But when you go there you know you are going to have an experience, good or bad. You will always have something to talk about the day after going to the Oz. The covers aren't bad here and the bouncers are actually pretty cool, judging from the times I've interacted with them. The drinks vary a lot (for some reason) according to what bartender you get. The music is always bumping though and the place is set up really well. The only thing that has ever gotten on my nerves is the lack of hip-hop playing. It seems like they're moving in a direction of more "house" music or dubstep, which I don't really get into. First off, I'll concur the crowd is a little questionable. But unless you're an idiot, there shouldn't be any problems. This place is ALWAYS packed. They are open until at least 5 am, sometimes 8 am on weekends. They have a huge dance floor, a patio w/ dance floor and a VIP room. They play mostly unedited hip hop, and for the most part it's a good time. The drinks are watered down and expensive, and it was pretty pricey to get in from what I last recall. But this is the only place that will cover your after-hours fix. read more

I haven't gone here in a long time and I'm glad to see it's still going strong. It's a nice club, for afterhours if you wanna party. Cover usually isn't too much, and lighting is kinda cool, and dance floor is good size, with two walkways above the dancefloor on either side, for girls to show off. Went on a sunday night and they were having a cool foam party. Good mix of music. Started out house, then some electronica, and as I was leaving, hiphop and some top 40. Mostly a younger crowd. And, tho I didn't see any this time, the occasional drug deal goes down there. As long as you don't mess with anyone, no one will mess with you. The only times that i have been to the Oz is when i was forced to go for a friend's b-day and even then i tried to get out of it. The first time i went there my gas cap got stolen. The second time i went there some lady was running around in front of the club with a pic of her daughter and said that she had called her and now she is missing. I am merely writing a review from my own standpoint & disappointment as I read others' reviews. I understand it is their opinion but it may be out-dated or truly negative people out there. First of all this is a CLUB, I am not sure what others look for when choosing a club, but my personal expectations are never "high." I am going to a CLUB, I expect smoke, loud music, people everywhere, a little band of 'hoes' - some creepers in the background, and the mix and match of the 'norms' we see. I have never had a bad experience here, and I have always left having fun. I don't go here often, maybe go once or twice a year but I continuously leave this place an option because it is always a fun time. It is only $5 cover - and I usually go on Saturdays because it is strictly 21+. I have never been offered drugs because I don't go looking for them, I usually go with a group of friends, where we stick together, dance together, and have fun together, and guess what--that's what happens! All these reviews I read of it being 'scummy' or 'the worst place ever' are just sad. I understand it has a reputation, but times change. A couple years ago it was feelin' a little rough. As I have continued to go, its always been a fun time. People everywhere, steady flow of air because ya know it can get a little warm as you dance :) - and great music. I never buy drinks here, I do not drink so that eliminates drinks EVERYWHERE, and I would consider my perception of this place pretty accurate considering I have no substance protecting my reality or view. If you want to have some fun, and are willing to experience the Oz yourself instead of what others might say, then you will not be disappointed. Just had to say that. This is in response to Jay C's race rant while reviewing The Oz Nightclub. Why is it Jay C that so many people feel free to speak of and label "white people" with a broad stroke of stereotyping. I am white and I believe with all my heart that the vast majority of white people are as accepting of people from all backgrounds as well as their own. My experience in life also backs up that belief. I grew up in white/Latino L.A. And white/black St Louis. I have had non white and non Christian friends my whole life. My best friend is black, my grandson is 1/4 black, my son has dated two different Asian girls over the past eight years. "Good" people want race, religion, sexual preference, gender, etc not to be an issue, stumbling block, of life. I am not the minority of white people, I am the norm. read more

To start off, I am an African American, who has been witness to the acts of a terrible event. This club is ran by people off of the street who do not care about humanity. I have personally seen a white girl get kicked in the head repeatedly while the bouncers on duty did nothing about it. They sat back and let a harmless girl be beat to a pulp, and when she was asked to press charges by the police, they made it seem like she was at fault, so she told them not to press charges in fear that she would be harassed by the other individuals. Not to mention the lady was seizing on the floor after being beaten to a pulp by three black girls who did not care a single bit about humanity. I used to go to the Oz every weekend with a group of friends. We always had a blast. The music was good, DJ Reece and Gary were always spinning good house, hard house, trance with other stuff mixed in. Recently I had the displeasure of going back hoping for a good time. This was not the case. This place has become a victim to it's location. All that was played was rap and the crowd was pretty much "thuggish". There were many fights over some hood-rat and I wouldn't be shocked if some patrons were carrying guns. The VIP room which I used to get into was closed also. What happened to this place?
