We stayed at the Malmaison (which is connected to the castle), so we HAD to do the tour. The price is fair and the entire tour is about 45 minutes, but they also allow you to wander around afterwards.
I won't lie, at first I thought this was going to be super cheesy....our guide was King Richard and he kept trying to crack lame-ish jokes, but after about 5 minutes, he won me over, lame jokes and all. He was super friendly and animated and really kept to the role of being King Richard, while also being really informative. I definitely feel as though I learned a lot about the castle's history, from it's early days as a fortress to it's later days as a prison. You start at the bottom and work your way up the winding staircase to one of the rooms, then continue up to the very top, where you have amazing 360 degree views of Oxford city. He also pointed out the original Oxford City entrance gates - which are still standing. You then head down into the dungeon and then into the jail area.
It was a very brisk evening (about 35 degrees) and the inside of the castle was only slightly warmer than the outside, which meant that most of our group was shivering. Just keep in mind that in the 11th century, they did not install heating in their castles - so dress as warmly as you would if the tour were outside.
When in Oxford, do the tour, it's really fun! read more
