Charity shops can't stay in business unless kind-hearted people are willing to take a few extra steps and give away clothes or cutlery they've stopped using instead of throwing the unwanted stuff in the bin. Take a look in your garage, wardrobe and bookshelves. I'm sure you'll find pants and skirts you know you will never wear again, books you want others to enjoy or even unused presents from old aunts you never felt good about throwing out but take up lots of space in the closet. I'm not sure how many people still use their old VCR players, but I have to admit that I haven't watched anything on VHS in a very, very long time. Thus everytime I walk into the shop I get a bit of a feeling that I've walked into a sort of media museum. It's also a reminder of how amazingly quick we're making technological advances, I mean before we know it DVDs will be on the outs and Blue Ray disks will have completely taken over. 2. They have a good selection of books. Many of which are travel guides! I don't know about you, but I love to travel, but hate shelling out money on someone else telling me what to do. Unlike a lot of charity shops, which do come in for a lot of abuse for being very uncool, this shop is well presented and doesn't feel like a mothballed 'charity shop' at all. There's also a small range of Oxfam's well known fair trade branded products. Great for cheap books good quality books and your helping a good cause as the bulk of Oxfam Ireland's money goes to long term development work in East, Central and Southern Africa.

Barnardo's of Rathmines is a quaint little store in a line of charity shops on the Rathmines Road strip. This one has a good range of men's, women's and children's clothing, and even has the Barnardo's Brand New range, which features brand new clothes at heavily discounted prices. These are donated by a range of retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers. I was particularly impressed with the range of women's shoes and boots on offer, and at the lage number of CDs and videos on sale. These guys are doing great things for the youth of Ireland, so support them, volunteer at their stores and donate your unwanted clothing.

Barnardos are a children's charity which do significant work in all areas related to children and stores such as this provide some of their income. They stock a good range of clothes, toys, shoes and books and I seem to see something I'd like every time I walk past. The range of useful and not-so-useful items, from superglue to headphones and anything in between, makes you either want to run out or dig into the pockets to see how many bargains you can make. That's exactly what I hate about these kind of shops. I always end up buying some crap I don't need just because it's cheap. How can I not buy new kitchen utensils when they costs only € 2? Or a 3-Euro knitted ear-warmer? It's cold out there you know. Poundwise can be handy when looking for a casual present. Not to say that you should do birthday and Christmas shopping here, but for fun gifts for no particular occasion you'll have plenty of junk to choose from. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
