There are a lot of great parks in the Birmingham, Alabama area and Homewood Central Park is a great addition to the area. We as a community need parks. A place where we as a community can gather in relaxation and recreation. Homewood Central Park is an incredible part of the Homewood, Alabama community. While…read morevisiting Alabama, my friends and I decided to spend a couple of hours here and ended up hiking about 5-6 miles. There's truly no shortage of trails, and the variety keeps things interesting the entire time. The park definitely offers some challenging uphill climbs--especially for us Florida girls who aren't used to elevation--but we powered through and felt very accomplished. One of my favorite highlights was Rushing Rendezvous; the idea of a suspension bridge tucked up in the treetops always excites me, and this one did not disappoint. Of course, when we saw Trail 5 marked as most difficult, it was a no‑brainer--we had to take it. I really enjoyed reading about the history along the way, especially learning more about the Birmingham Mineral Railroad site. I do wish there had been a bit more signage around some of the remaining structures so we could soak up even more history, but honestly, guessing their original purpose became part of the fun. Hands down, I would absolutely come back to explore more of Red Mountain Park. It's a great mix of challenge, scenery, and history--and well worth the visit.

There are always a good number of people using the trail (either walking, running, riding bikes, sitting on the benches, etc.), but it's never insanely crowded. I don't feel unsafe if I go walking by myself either. The streams that run along the trail give it a relaxing feel as well. The trail runs parallel to Lakeshore Parkway, but I never really hear much traffic while I'm there. Definitely check this place out if dirt trails and/or hills are not your thing!

It's well-lit and it has been easy to find parking. Today, I walked around the facility and it's nice. It reminds of the Parks & Recreation facility in Hoover. It's clean and seems well maintained. There is a concession stand where you can purchase all types of food and goodies. The lifeguards are very friendly. If you are a Homewood resident you can join for a small fee and have access to all the Homewood Parks and facilities.

It's just a short drive from downtown, and one of the best perks is that parking is free and you can walk around the statue grounds without paying anything. Even if you don't go inside, the overlook alone is worth the trip for the skyline views and photo opportunities. If you're interested in the history behind the statue and its restoration, there's a museum on site that adds a lot of context. Admission is $8, and that ticket also lets you take the elevator up inside the statue to about three-quarters of the way to the top, which gives you even higher and more impressive views of the city. Overall, it's a great mix of scenery and local history. Whether you just want a quick stop for the views or a deeper dive into Birmingham's past, it's a worthwhile visit.

Shades Creek runs along the side of the trail, so it is pretty. Along the way, there are plenty of entrances and parking lots, but because of the large, beautiful trees, the concrete and asphalt are hidden from the trail, and there is a lot of shade. My only wish is that, because of the distance of the trail, that they would put a few port a potties along the way.

The lake is about three acres and has a paved trailed around about 3/4 of the lake, and a wooden walkway/bridge around the remaining 1/4. It's not a long track by any means, but it has nice views of the water and trees. There's a playground and gazebo at the far end of the park. I often see families grilling out there on the weekends (grills are provided) while their kids run around and play. I like going to this park because it's not too busy and usually very quiet. I think the Birmingham-area ducks like that it's quiet as well, because there are always a ton here! It's also well-lit at night, which is great when I want to exercise but avoid the summer heat.

There were plenty of water fowl to gaze at or feed a healthy snack to. The water was lovely to look at and the star in the middle of the lake is how the park got its name. There were cars busily going around the area, so it's not the quietest park I've been to. While I guess it's a public park, It's still in a neighborhood so I question if it was built for the people that live around it. Anyway, I would visit again if I'm near the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
