Ocean King is the type of restaurant that you go to often with family and friends for large…read moregatherings. Which it can certainly supply. It may not compete at a Michelin star level but will certainly make you full when hungry. I have been here countless times with family. The food is what expect from a Cantonese/Chinese restaurant. It incorporates a lot of msg into their dishes which however does leave urges of thirst after. The meat options including roast pork and pork/chicken sparerib are classical favourites. The 2 way fried rice is a unique speciality of this restaurant. The king prawn and scrambled egg are one of my favourites. They also cater seafood such as steamed fish, lobster and crab. However like most traditional Chinese/Cantonese the service in many others opinions is not top notch. The staff aren't very talkative and do not always fill your needs when asked. I don't always mind when the staff are not super attentive as sometimes I am eating for pure hunger and in a hurry rather than wanting to have an experience. As I can have an experience somewhere else more fine dining. Ocean king is a resturant with below average service but makes up for it with great food. For you to get their attention you really need to call loudly or put your hand up. The staff are constantly busy and most likely don't have time to frequently come to you. This makes complete sense in my opinion. However staff attitude could be a future note to look in the future. The resturant itself is quite large and not too old. The food has always been good and I would recommend to come here not for a fine dining experience but for great Cantonese food when very hungry!

Glen Waverley has an abundance of Asian restaurants, most of them offering similar experiences as…read moretheir neighbors. Ocean kings is probably one of the 'better' restaurants in Glen Waverley, it offers a much more family/formal (I use this word loosely) style of dinning as its seating capacity is on the larger side. You walk in and immediately you see round tables surrounded by friends and family members enjoying conversation over a meal. Its definitely got a restaurant feeling to it, whereas the other restaurants neighboring ocean king only offer an 'in and out' atmosphere. This place is probably on the pricey side in comparison to the other places on the strip, however I find their food to be of better quality and the whole experience more enjoyable. You pay for what you get, this includes prawn crackers, 'lei tang' and fruits. Ocean king offer fresh fish, crab, lobster and abalone. They have a large menu with a lot of goodies (try the pork belly). They also offer take away meats (roast chicken, duck and pork). If you're looking for a slightly more official dinner destination in Glen Waverley, I would suggest here coming here.

I wasn't altogether enamoured with my dining experience here…read more The eatery is nice enough, it's very casual so I wasn't expecting anything too special, but I was still disappointed. The wait staff were unobservant and slow. It took them too long to come over to our table with menus and then again to take our order. When they finally did, we ordered jasmine tea and two Tsing Tao beers. The drinks arrived after the food did, which is just wrong. Then the vegetarian dumplings we had ordered arrived but they were pork ones, so of course these had to be sent back, and thank goodness it wasn't the only vegetarian at the table who discovered the dumpling's meaty filling. The spicy fish we ordered wasn't all that spicy and we've definitely had this dish in a few other szechuan eateries in Melbourne and enjoyed it a lot more. The flavour was nice enough though and the serving HUGE. The claypot eggplant was too sweet and had tonnes of black vinegar in it, which threw the balance of flavours off. The best dish was the cold starter of silken tofu with preserved egg which was a hit with everyone at the table. Just as a side note in case anyone from szechuan restaurants in Melbourne reads this - with regards to the spicy fish dish, why not add less fish meat, but make it a better type of fish? I'm sick of fatty basa, and putting loads of it in the dish doesn't make up for it being the most insipid white fish around. I'd happily pay more for a better quality, meatier and more substantial white fish.

I really should have looked more closely, because there is quite a bit of variety at Spicy Fish. It's traditional Szechuan cuisine, according to the menu. Not being Szechuan myself, I'll have to trust them. There's definitely a bit of heat that makes you aware that you're not having the usual Cantonese dining experience though. I tried a chicken dish which I quite liked. Something with chilli in it, but I suppose that's descriptive of most dishes here. The chicken itself was tender and really quite pleasant, which was a nice surprise as ordering chicken dishes in Asian restaurants often leaves me disappointed. My wife ordered dumplings which she really enjoyed too. The service was alright. Not fantastic, but better than many of the places in the immediate vicinity.

This means that there will be a certain spiciness to many of the dishes, as compared with the more common Cantonese, Szechuan is typically hotter. Order yourself a hotpot. There is a good range of ingredients to choose from, and invariably the meal you are presented with will be delicious. A few times, I've gone with a fairly spicy option, and although it was probably too hot for me (if I'm truly honest with myself, it was pretty much thermonuclear, heat-wise), I could not stop myself from enjoying it. The service was alright. Typical suburban Chinese restaurant. Nice atmosphere, and it can be a busy place at times. Worth a look if you're feeling adventurous.

If I had chosen the hotpot, I would have likely written a negative review because the choices looked unappealing for the price. Luckily, I went for the cooked dishes instead. A night at a Sichuan restaurant wouldn't be complete without the signature spicy fish. This came in a massive bowl with lots of soft smooth fish meat. Though it was milder than many other places, it was still delicious on a cold day. The gong bao prawns were more honey sweet with peanuts than spicy. The three cup chicken looked ordinary but was surprisingly well made. The chicken pieces were crispy, and tasted great because of the fragrant garlic with a hint of honey sweetness.

Lucky…read moreYu has been around for years, and for years I have been a loyal customer, particularly fond of their chicken and sweet corn soup. The funny thing is, I'm not usually a fan of said soup. However one day I arrived home after picking up my Lucky Yu goodies only to discover my won ton soup was actually chicken and sweet corn. Oh the horror! Rather than drive back down, I ate the soup. That was three years ago and I have not looked back, my obsession with chicken and sweet corn extending out of Lucky Yu and into any chinese restaurant I go to. Lucky Yu still holds a special place in my heart though as they were my first.

The only reason that I stopped here was because I was on my way to a movie night at a mate's place, and we were all bringing our own takeaway. This place isn't going to make me drive the extra 10 minutes or so just to grab their food, but really, it isn't bad. In fact, it's pretty reasonable food at decent prices. I had beef in blackbean and fried rice, and I walked out of the shop with change from a twenty dollar note. So it isn't expensive for what it is. The serving sizes are pretty good, too. If I'd bought an entree, it would have been enough to feed two people comfortably, but I somehow managed to find my inner manliness to force myself to finish it. You don't leave food when you eat with your mates. It's a sign of weakness. Doubly so if the food is bad. The place itself was relatively neat, possibly a bit on the daggy side, but still acceptable. If I was doing a hard day's furniture shopping on Whitehorse Road, I'd be happy to eat there again.

They are very reasonably priced too, $12 for rice plate or alternatively you can have the whole duck for $ 38 - the portions were generous! Nothing much going on in term of ambiance, design was very standard to other Chinese place in the area. Also, don't expect tender loving care here, you will be disappointed. Authentic, awesome tasting food with friendly wait staff. We were a party of 10, so we got to try over a dozen dishes. The interior is nothing fancy, but the food is as good as anything I have had in Hong Kong. Our favorite dishes were: Roast Duck - excellent, crispy skin, juicy meet, great flavor Soya sauce chicken - perfect, authentic, just how it is meant to be done BBQ Roast Pork - Excellent, very tender, just the right amount of fat, that was also soft and tasty. Crocodile with xo chili sauce - This is the best crocodile meat dish I have ever had. They must pound the meat because it was very tender and went so well with the bold sauce. This should be their signature dish. Green beans, pork and dried fish. Excellent. I could eat this all day. Scallops with vegetable - Excellent, lots of flavor Prawns and egg whites - Loved this, large prawns, cooked perfectly with that fresh crunch. Singapore Noodles - Very tasty Mango Chicken - Tasty, good for kids and less adventurous eaters
