A group of friends and I…read moretook a Bachelorette Weekend Trip to the Cape in September of 2017, all six of us agreed that this was our FAVORITE part. We researched several charters in the area and theirs was the most reasonably priced-and I am not convinced anyone could have given us a better experience. Being from the south, we weren't sure what to expect, and we were blown away by the afternoon we spent with Tom and Helaine. The day before our charter, they actually cancelled it because the weather wasn't going to be great. When we woke up the next day, the forecast had changed so we called to ask if they would consider taking us out after all-they were so excited to hear from us and emphatically agreed! As we entered the Nantucket sound, Captain Tom spotted some seals and brought us in for a closer look. As we idled, the seals swam and played feet away from us!!! Amazing! When the bride-to-be got cold, Helaine zipped her up in one of Captain Tom's heavy duty jackets-this is just one example of the continued kindness and hospitality they showed us on the charter. When we reached the traps, Captain Tom and Helaine patiently taught us what to do, and we hooked and pulled the traps from the water all on our own! We left with eight (huge) lobsters and an experience we will never forget. Going out on a charter with Chatham Boat Tours was so much more than a touristy experience. I felt like Tom and Helaine invited us into their lives, and enjoyed sharing the experience with us as much as we enjoyed them. They treat their customers like family, they catered to us specifically, and Helaine even sent us off with two sticks of butter, cups to melt it in, lobster crackers, and some freshly baked potatoes! So sweet, above and beyond! I encourage anyone considering taking a lobster charter in the area to give these amazing people your business. (I can't stress enough how wonderful Tom and Helaine are!!!) Their friendliness and eagerness to make sure we had the best time possible was what made this so special for us. First of all, we were looking for something that wouldn't take all day like the whale watch cruises…read moredo, and as I got to choose the activity, I chose seal watching. I was on this tour about 20 years ago prior to the reappearance of the sharks and wanted to see if there would be a noticeable difference in the population. We made our reservation online a couple days before our trip (so easy) so it was easy peasy once we showed up. They were very good with communication as our trip was moved up to an earlier time and they let us know promptly. Knowing the area we weren't worried about getting lost and being late for the cruise but if you aren't familiar with the cape don't worry, it's super easy to find. We showed up at the requested time and were quickly boarded. It was a brisk cape day but if you NOT a polar beast (like me) and you go off season you will want to remember that it gets chillier on a boat steering into the wind than it will be on shore....dress appropriately. We started off and the captain gave all safety instructions as well as some points to notice as we pulled out of the harbor. It is a bit of a trek to Monomoy island from the harbor, but along the way the guide and the captain would chime in with what we could see. Then...quite suddenly...there they were. The largest congregation grey seals in North America. Grey seals don't "bark", they "moan" so it's very haunting. When they noticed us, there was a stampede on the beach of the younger individuals to be part of the welcoming party. The guide said that the older bigger seals are bored with us and couldn't be bothered to stop sunning themselves. We had adorable little heads popping up left and right studying us like we studied them. After a while it was time to bid farewell to those adorable squishy bodies and off we went on a bit of a tour of nearby harbors. At several points the captain would stop and we would be educated about the area and things like how erosion affects these areas and how it's all part of the parks landscape to protect not just seals but birds. I can honestly say as a nature geek I was in heaven. The tour is not too expensive and completely worth every single cent. Our guide was wonderful and very knowledgeable to answer most of my questions. Sadly, it was too early in the season for sharks and orcas...so no predation occured. Sigh. I say this is one of the best excursions offered on the Cape and if you are a nature geek as well then it should rank high on your bucket list!

i Yelp a lot. like, a LOT. it's not often you happen upon a business that has so many excellent…read morereviews. i'm here to confirm that the excellent reviews are accurate. my husband and i have been on many a whale watch, but never a seal watch. knowing the weather yesterday was going to be amazing, we decided to give it a go. what to expect: free parking in a grassy area that abuts the dock. there are no bathrooms on site, but there is a port-a-potty which is very clean and easily accessible. there is some bench seating where you can hang out while waiting for your tour time. the website states you should arrive half an hour prior to your time, and that anyone who isn't there twenty minutes prior, is probably going to be left behind. knowing that, we were there promptly at 10, for our 10:30 tour. our captain (Captain Rob) started calling out party names at ten after, and, since we were all assembled, we actually ended up leaving a little early. he sat us by party in the boat, but was deliberate about instructing us where to sit, ensuring that the boat would be balanced. a note regarding the boat: at most, i would guess that the boat can seat about 12 - 14 adults comfortably. we were a party of 6 adults and two kids, so this is a pretty intimate tour. i've been on a bunch of different boats, but this was the smallest. if you are not used to being close to the water, this is a great introduction. you can expect to go at a pretty low speed as you are exiting the harbor, but you'll be going at around 25 mph when you are out, and heading toward the seals. the seals! there were so many! we did see several just bobbing in the water, as well as swimming, but we also saw huge crowds of them just hanging out on some sand bars. we could hear their braying and howling (a sign of contentment, according to Captain Rob), especially as we got close and the motor was turned off. the tour was a nice balance of history about the area, and the beautiful houses lining the shores, as well as information about the seals. you do get up close and personal, as they're often curious about the boat, so we had seals who were just feet away from us. Captain Rob- i can't say enough good things. he was incredibly nice, and developed a great rapport with not only the adults, but the two little kids (who, credit to their parents, were incredibly well-behaved). he just had such a gentle manner about him, and i felt very safe in his care. if you've never been on a seal watch, or you've never been out with Blue Claw, i highly, highly recommend. my husband and i will definitely be back, we enjoyed ourselves so much. this is a great way to spend around two hours out on the water, and appreciating a little slice of the beautiful Cape.

Captain Darren is cool, personable, and informative. He and his pilot plane know how to get you up close and personal with white sharks. We lost count at 8! His pre-trip communication was great. Five days beforehand he warned us that the weather was looking questionable for our scheduled trip on a Sunday. Then when it was certain our trip could not happen as planned, he moved things around to fit us in on Saturday. The last shark we saw was hunting in shallow water, circling and putting on a great show. Our time should have been up but Captain Darren kept us moving alongside it for an extra half hour (without being asked!) despite being the end of what had to be a very long, breakless day for him. Then he sent us photos from our trip just a few hours later! Captain Darren is truly committed to giving his guests the best experience possible and he succeeds at it. We went on a rainy day to see some whales. What was interesting is that the whales tend to be in…read moreone spot, so all of the ships were circling around an area just past the tip of Ptown. The ride out was fine and I took some ginger pills beforehand. I stayed on the outer deck, but it was COLD! Definitely worth wearing extra layers and maybe even a winter jacket when venturing out, even in dead of summer. The ride back, I had to choose between cold and nausea, and I chose to sit in the enclosed area in the middle which made me feel so sick but being cold again for the hour or so ride home was not my cup of tea. The in-between: We saw so many whale families. Many of them breached. A few were saying "hi" smacking the water with their fins. Another totally jumped and spun in the air before crashing back into the water with a huge wave. On the way back to port we found one feeding using the bubbles method! I was in the middle area and too sick to get up but I saw someone recording the whole thing and got to see it from their phone! Overall it was awesome. The one thing that's a little bit disappointing is that they tend to go out twice a day. I learned later that that's because they're on a strict schedule with regards to high and low tides at their docking stations. We lingered out a little bit extra for that final breached whale, and rushed back to port to avoid getting stuck at sea. The price is a little steep but it covers the cost of staff, fuel, and other boat needed things. At the end of the tour the guide (describes what you're going to see and what's going on around the vessel in the water) asks for tips and you can drop a few bucks into a bucket as you disembark the ship. Happy whale watching!
