Either the previous review was written by the owner or is horribly out of date. The chips were nice but the fish was very poor quality with a layer of thick gooey uncooked batter between the fish and main batter. Also quite small. If it was as cheap as the review said then that wouldn't be so bad but it wasn't. They charged me a whole pound for gravy. No more needs to be said.

The aroma of fish and chips in the air is addictive and I sad to satisfy my needs. Big Fry is housed in a small shop, but the fryers are deep and big. I chose the classic Fish and Chips. I could tell I was eating good quality fish by the texture and taste of the cod. The chips were golden brown and had a buttery taste to them. The batter wasn't too thick and it didn't fill me up. The portion sizes were excellent, I could have shared mine. I love a good fish and chip shop and this one has a nice traditional feel to it. The menu is extensive and all of it is deep fried. They also sell accompaniments such as mushy peas, pickled onions and curry sauce. I had all three with my dinner; the curry sauce was especially good.

Whenever I pop into this fish and chip bar I order a classic cheese burger with salad and barbeque sauce which they make fresh for you within minutes which is a great and positive reassurance that your meal is going to piping hot as well just been made. For any fish and chip bar this is a superb aspect and quality, because really, who wants stale chips and a crusty made burger for their dinner, even if it is a cheap meal from the corner store...

Do they really need their rest as much as England needs access to its favourite dish seven days a week? I think not. Luckily, the Whitehouse Common Fish Bar agrees with me, opening for four precious hours on a Sunday evening between 5.00pm and 9.00pm. Their accessibility is matched by some pretty decent chips. Last Sunday, we both had cod and chips just arriving in time to take advantage of the Sunday opening. The chips were well-cooked and nicely seasoned with salt. I have to be in the mood for vinegar. The fish batter was golden and crispy, harbouring white tender cod at its absolute best. Yes, there's more to the menu than the classics but some days, and especially Sundays, you just want things to be the way they should be....

If people are willing to spend their time online talking about fish & chips then they must be a cut above the rest. Which, to be fair, they are. Admittedly, I've only given them 3 stars, but, if I'm being honest, I'm not a huge fan of fish & chips - I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Well, partly its about the fact that they have a wider selection of options than your average chippy - including gluten free (which everyone seems to get excited about). My fish & chips were great - not too greasy and with an actual flavour, which all too often I find lacking in fast food.
