We called a number of companies to source quotes for the removal of a very large tree on our property. Otto Tree Service came out quickly after the initial contact, and the owner Aaron was very helpful answering questions while we spoke and he took notes to provide an estimate. At the time he did not provide an exact price, but everything else he communicated had us interested in working with them. He also mentioned it would be about two weeks to get out and do the job once we approved an estimate. Their initial estimate was priced reasonably alongside a couple other good options, but Aaron's attitude about the project and the effort he made to confirm all the details moved them up to our first choice.
Unfortunately, things went poorly after that. His Office Manager sent over the estimate later that night, which we approved a few hours later. The next morning, she called us back to say "I messed up and shouldn't have sent that, we actually need to charge you $1,000 more to do that job. My bad!" She had some reasonable excuses (they would need to subcontract portions of it, it would probably span two days, it was large and there were safety concerns)... but all of that was on the table between the visit and the sending of the estimate. It felt like the upcharge was added on after we eagerly approved the project that night, but it was blamed on "sending the wrong version of the proposal." It is worth noting the Office Manager is the Owner's spouse, so the "communication breakdown" was a bit of a stretch. It also felt like she was adding on the extra thousand - a call directly from the Owner who came out for the estimate, explaining his concerns, would have changed our reaction quite a bit. They also had 5 hours to look over which version of the half-page estimate they were sending...
I was pretty put off and told her I would have to consider what comes next. I feel like a lot of people would have just bailed on them based on the "misestimate" and rightfully so, but I've had to go ask clients for more money for various reasons, so I get it.
She called back an hour later and hesitantly told me they would agree to do it for the initial quoted price, but in all subsequent conversations she kept framing the conversation around stuff like "well, it might take longer than expected... we might need some larger equipment..." We thanked them for reconsidering the modified price tag, and reluctantly agreed to move forward. She said she'll be in touch to get us on the books in the next week or so.
Then, she called a week later and said she would call Aaron to get us on the books for the following week.
Then, two more weeks passed before she called back to tell me that they were now looking at dates approximately 2 months out from the initial estimate (no longer in her control because they had to subcontract a crane operator, and he was booked months in advance). Again, I said fine, whatever, lets just keep this moving.
Then, she called back a week later and moved the date back another two weeks. There was now 3 months between the estimate with "two weeks" and an actual date on the calendar. And that new date was in the middle of December, which presumably was going to run into weather and staffing issues because obviously.
Between the "oopsies, give us an extra thousand dollars" and the "two weeks" turning into three months to possibly get to our job, I cannot say I would recommend them. However, in their defense, they didn't actually get to do any work on our property, and the owner did seem very competent while discussing the project initially.
As a sidebar - after the first two weeks lapsed with no proposed date, we ended up getting another estimate from a company that also said "two weeks pending your approval." Lower price point, all the work Otto had agreed to do and then some, only moved the date once (by a week due to rain), and the project is now completed over a month ahead of the first possible date Otto gave me. I felt bad having to call and cancel with Otto, but they had nearly two months to get out here and tackle the project, and the admin blunders left me feeling like I was going to be waiting another two months at a minimum and was still unsure what I would be charged.
I would also note that I phoned 17 vendors, and only 6 of them were even willing to come out and quote due to a busy summer storm season leading to a backlog. To that end, I wasn't necessarily surprised it was going to take a while to get to, but the issue ended up being communication and honesty once we were on our third delay. read more
