As a gluten-free and vegan gal, I have found a place where OMG, you have choice! unsure why this restaurant has opened its eyes to the world of allergies and intolerances, but for the first time in 3 years, I got to eat a yummy vegan, gluten-free mediterranean (greek) style pizza. Am still salivating. Oh and second time I went: arancini! yep, vegan and GF!!! When you enter the resto, you will be welcome by the rich smells of Italian cuisine. The staff is dynamic. And the decor gives you something between a diner and nice Italian restaurant. So played back atmosphere, yet professional. Beautiful glassed area at the back. Ottavio is a pasta / pizza place. During the week, between 11am and 2pm I think, you can have the make your own pasta option. You get a card where you select the pasta, sauce, ingredients you want inside like vegetable, meat and such and your order is sent. You also have access to the full menu. I tried the pizza for the first time. I normally take the make your own pasta menu but it wasn't available since it was the week end. I took the Americana pizza which is pizza with meatballs, bacon and another pepperoni. Was very salty due to the meat selection. Crust is thin and soft (can't hold in your hand), meatball wasn't made for pizza so taste was off (its pasta meatball and seems like sausage meatball) and the sauce, while very easy to see, didn't had a big taste. I won't take it again. In the end, a pizza and a pasta serving costed nearly 80$. Nothing else, no drink, no appetizer, just both plate. The price really raised a lot since pandemic and I feel this is way too much for the quality, specially for pasta. I might revisit when it's make your own pasta during the week of the price is better. read more

Came here for lunch during the week and it wasn't too busy. We ordered the tortellini pasta with rosee sauce mixed with mushrooms and meatballs. Portion was big enough to split with 2 people. Also got the Sicilian pizza and it was full of flavor and delicious. To top it off, we got the beignets topped with cinnamon & sugar with a bowl of pastry cream and it was okay, nothing really special. I would definitely go back for the pizza and pasta. read more

We were so hungry, we decided to go to Ottavio for the first time. When we sat down, 3 different waiter came and ask the same questions if we were allergic, however the third said are you ready to order... I mean they saw us entering just now. We wanted Pasta... my bf took rose tortillini and I decided to take the classic pasta penne with sauce rose but wanted mushroom in it... i tired to check where was the extra $ for adding mushroom I couldn't see it but I said whatever its only mushrooms The waitress came, we gave our order and I asked if its possible to add the mushroom she said yes, and then she asked both of us if we wanted the pasta gratin ... in my head itll be a bit of roasted cheese little kick... and she didnt even say its extra or anything, so i was like uhm I don't know?... why not? Both plates came... covered in cheese at a point you dont even see the pasta at all .... Unfortunately i was shocked and mad i forgot to take a photo! The pasta was literally a soup... i couldn't eat it.. tried 5 bites i wasn't able to continue, it was literally liquid... literally a fkn soup... We asked for the bill, the waitress saw our plates still full barely touched and said ok... we paid 70$ for 2 pasta..... Came in to Ottavio to try the all you can eat mussels last week and was super stocked to see what was going on over here. When we came in we were happy to see that there wasn't a big line up or anything, we were greeted by a friendly hostess who reminded us of the special going on. When we sat down we were surprised by how many option there actually where to chose from in terms of broth/preparation for the mussels. We were also informed that each special comes with an order of fries or salad to chose from as well. I decided to try the Dijon flavour and my friend went with the Guinness. Both our side of fries and salad came in first but I knew I wanted to save my fries for dipping. Once we got our actual orders they were delicious and perfectly coated, at this point we were also told that upon our next order if we did want try a different flavour there would be a fee of 2$ to do so, this was kind of disappointing as there were many options to choose from but my flavour was so good that I was okay sticking to it for a second time. Our second order of mussels unfortunately weren't as good as the first as the had way less liquid broth and the broth we did get was much watered down. We did let our waitress know of the issue and she told us this was due to this order properly have wetter mussels then the previous. Would like to go back and try some more flavour but this place is defo worth checking out ! read more

One of those restaurants in Montreal where it's classy enough to take your date, and also casual enough for a good value meal while hanging out with friends and coworkers. Very classy decors, yet warm and comfortable. Spacious space with open kitchen and the soft glow of the warm lights on orange cushioned walls and white tabletops. We did the pick your own pasta option, you get a piece of paper and do a la carte selection for choice of sauce, meats, and veggies. Something fun to do while waiting for foodz - the tabletop is comprised of white paper and with the pencils, you can go wild with imagination. I certainly had a grand time doodling away on the paper. The time past by fast and the food came in a generous portion plate. The angel hair pasta is fine and al dente, with the arrabbiata sauce, slightly spicy and savory, was perfect. The shrimp was cooked to tenderness and did not retain any of its 'fishy' taste. Overall, it was wonderful. Though the food is not extraordinary - still delicious, the value, atmosphere and the option to customize the pasta dish was excellent. read more

This is in regard to the Ottavio in Ville St-Laurent, which is the same restaurant in another location in Montreal. I don't give too many 5's, but this place is just great and deserving of 5 stars. One of my favorite attributes of this restaurant is that you can bring your own wine. My other favorite is that they have great food. When we moved here, we found it difficult to go out for dinner, because my wife has a gluten allergy and we don't speak french. A friend of ours happened upon Ottavio, due to their gluten free menu options, and invited us along. Since then, we have become regulars here. Again, they have great food, from Italian favorites like pizza and pasta to traditional Quebecois fare like mussels and fries. My wife and I usually start our meal by splitting either a caesar salad (gluten free) or the eggplant tower (gluten free). The appetizers are large and good for two. For the main course, I typically get a pizza. There are multiple options for toppings, perhaps 12 pizza alternatives. They are cut into 4 quarter slices and easily reduced to 8 slices. My wife either gets the mussels and fries or a gluten free pizza. For pasta, they have lasagna, spaghetti, and a series of pastas with tomato, rose, alfredo or pesto sauce. Accompanying the dinner is complementary bread which is not gluten free. It is important to note that among their gluten free options, they have pizza, pasta and mussels available. If you opt for gluten free, they provide you alternative silverware, and they even have gluten free soap in the restroom. They have two seatings, early and late. The early seating is around 6 and the late seating is around 8, although you can go in between seatings without a reservation. read more

Extremely bad experience today at Ottavio!!! Horrible service, rude rude greeter,food completely changed from old menu and salty and kicked us out of the restaurant because of other reservation, we waited 1hr and 1/2 for our food and had 20min to salow it down, and we had a LOVELY waitress reminding us we needed to go. Surely never going back, sad because once was one of our favorite restaurants. Luckily there are plenty more out there! Much much better! I was pretty excited since it was our first time trying out this restaurant i have heard so much about, and even more excited to find out you can Bring your Wine !!! Well, the night started with an appetizers of Fried Calamari : which were half cooked to my Opinion - the worst i've eaten in a while Then , as a meal i tried their seafood spaghettini . I love seafood . What a disappointment ..... one word DULL !!!!!! No taste at all and the sauce seemed to be straight out of a can, not even warm . Others had the Italian Sausage pasta and All meat Pizza and were better pleased . The night ended up at McDonalds with a delicious Big Mac since i had return my meal and wanted nothing else from the menu . It was the first time in my life I've done such thing !!! Excellent BYOB a few blocks from the Montmorency Metro Travellers to Montreal rightly gravitate to the island and rarely stray far afield. As such they pay a heavy premium for downtown convenience. For those in the know (and possession of an OPUS card) Laval is a 25 min ride on the excellent Metro and is the centre of a burgeoning restaurant culture, as exemplified by Ottavio This chic space (tucked into a mini mall) packed with locals wouldn't look out of place in any major downtown. Appetizers are outstanding, the duck trio salad exceptional value and the moules & frites fresh & tasty. Add terrific pizzas and pastas, the ability to bring a great bottle (or 2) of your own wine and Ottavios (at about $25 CAN) really can't be beat. read more

Went to ottavios on Easter Sunday. We were a group of 20. The service was good. Everyone got their meal at the same time. I had the taco as an entree that I wouldn't recommend. I had the diable mussel. They were good. The reason why they lost 2 stars is because we were celebrating a birthday and brought a custom cake. They said they were not able to serve our cake because they had a gluten free section to their menu. I'd understand if all the menu was gluten free, but this wasn't the case. read more

This is a review of the restaurant in St Laurent. My wife and I had been here once before and had a decent meal so a few months later we returned. It was about 9:30 pm when we arrived and we haden't eaten all day. We arrived to a warm reception from the hostess not knowing the misery that lied ahead. We ordered a brushetta pizza appetizer which when it arrived was very good. The trouble started when we asked for another 2 rolls while we waited for the food. Our annoynig waitress actually argued with us, asking us if we knew that the pizza was bread and asked us if we were sure we wanted another roll. We were hungry so we said yes please bring it. She then proceeded to ignore us and never brought what was asked for. Although I appreciate that she may have been trying to be helpful, I do not need nutritional advice and lousy service from a waitress at 9:30 at night. Our pasta main course was good except that a meatball that I paid extra for was burnt so badly it couldn't even be cut let alone chewed. Chances are this meatball was old and or microwaved. I asked for a club soda or Perrier and was told that they don't serve it but I could have a large bottle of their house carbonated water. We ordered it and were disappointed to find it completely flat. After our meal my wife explained the meatball situation to the waitress, who went to see the manager. When she returned with a revised bill minus the meatball she interrogated my wife asking why we had waited until the end of the meal to mention it. M wife replied "Because he ate the meatball last" but the true reason was that we did not want to interact with this person following the lousy and annoying service the meal started with. read more

The service staff was efficient and firendly with us. We actually had no reservation and we were accomodated on a friday night- when it usually gets really packed (I highly recommend that you make reservations in advance), as I witnessed with my own two eyes how fast it fills-up. I went to the location in St.Laurent and I thought I should clarify this, because I am not familiar with the other locations, yet. It was actually my first time. So for a BYOW, Ottavio does it right, but you get what you pay for- borderline microwave food. Ottavio, unlike the other BYOWs, made a decision to to be the low price leader- which is obviously appreciated, because they pack the house. In St. Laurent I found the clientele to be really enjoyable with a nice mix of every type and size of group: Families, families with a well behaved kids, friends, couples- everything. And everyone seemed to be having a great time. So the ambiance was very pleasant overall. The decor is fun and lively on a big scale and it serves as a refreshing background to enjoy a casual BYOW meal, but the orange seats need serious spot treatment and brushing- look twice before you sit down. Pizzas are 2/5(can sauce-high salt, commercial doe, average quality cheese), appetizers like the spicy shrimp are fun. You get a boat load of mini-shrimps in a smokey tomato tapenade sauce, surrounded by a puff pastry bowl. The biegnets for dessert are tastey 3/5, but it could definitely use more than one dipping sauce. Like a hazelnut chocolate, instead of just creme fraiche. Yes, most of the food is mass produced and distributed amongst the multiple locations. I will resist the comparison to l'Academie- bec they only have BYOW in common. But if I had to choose a byow tomorrow- it would be l'academie. Back to Ottavio, they really have a solid system and a flexible menu to accomdate everyone's tastes. Mussels are available in about 8 different styles. Just keep in mind that Laval is the original, followed by St.Laurent and finally their latest addition in St. Leonard. If possible, go for the newer locations like St.Laurent and St.Leonard to get the latest interpretation of their concept. P.S. the coffee is boiling hot- so hot, that the coffee grounds became burnt and ruined the whole coffee, which took me 8 mins to find out, since it was so damn scolding. Oh well. read more

We came to Ottavio after a hellish afternoon being snowed in the motel on our engagement trip. What a difference this place made! I should say that I have Celiac, so we picked this place because of the gluten-free options. For starters, I've never seen gluten-free cutlery before. What a great change of pace! They even had a gluten-free bread available for me before our food came out. I'm used to watching my fiancé eat the complimentary bread that I'm allergic to in front of me while making related puns. I got a gluten-free bolognese which was delicious! A good balance of sauce and herbs, and not too dense like a lot of gluten-free noodles can be. My partner got the spicy sauce with chicken pasta, which he reported as being "moy caliente". I had to remind him everyone speaks French here, not Spanish. Even the packing up of leftovers was different, as the hostess brought over a container for me to ensure no cross-contamination issues. Our assigned waiter Denis did not serve us as he treated the other customers. He did not even say any greetings (no hi hello), he walked to our table, picked up our filled up "Make your own pasta" sheets, and just asked "Is this your sheet?" to my partner, we said yes and he left. The whole stay, he only came to our table on 2 occasions: to give us bread and to give us our bill. I could see how he treated his other customers differently, often going to check if their food was okay, filling up their glasses with water, asking if they needed some olive oil or more bread. He did not do any of this with us. PLUS, while we were waiting to get my food to-go, another waitress saw us anxiously waiting and came herself to pack up the food and bring us our desert because he LEFT for a SMOKE BREAK in the middle of serving his customers! The food is good, the staff are friendly. Their policies are ridiculous though charging extra because someone have allergies and because that slows down the kitchen is just bad judgement. It makes people with allergies not feel welcome. The worst part is they charge 1 dollar! "I do not give a s *** t, f **** ing pay the bill!" That is what the restaurant manager Ottavio Laval replied when I tried to explain my reasoning as to a confusion on prices in the menu (GLUTEN FREE). Here are a few more details: I have a comment on the insulting service I received at this restaurant. I am usually never comment on web forums, but the manager's behavior crosses the line. In every restaurant I've done, I've never had a problem with getting a correct invoice when there is confusion about the menu or because the service I received. There has been confusion on the price of dessert. The menu they gave me dessert indicated that a gluten-free desert was available. However, on my bill, the price was not good. They wanted to charge me more than the price indicated. Because of this confusion, I requested an invoice correction. Naturally, the waitress brought the manager. But that manager, rather than addressing the confusion and problem in order to correct and prevent this problem from happening again. He told me that this is not his problem. He did not even try to understand the situation and he cared less for the error. The conversation ended with the abrupt words from the manager: "I do not give a s*** t, pay the f **** ing the bill!". It is unacceptable to be treated like this. I found that quite ordinary and very disrespectful. I sincerely believe that this manager does not understand customer service and I'll never set foot in this restaurant chain, and all people who usually accompany me. read more

The food may be good for the price but the service is inexcusable. I organized my daughter's baptism, a party of 47 people at Ottavio Laval, on Nov 4, 2012. I was surprised by a few charges on the bill and decided to go see the manager. Some of the charges i was enquiring about included: i was charged for 47 adult meals (however, we were 44 adults and 3 children aged 4, 5, and 7 and the manager insisted that only adult meals came out of his kitchen), i was charged $2.50 for a glass of milk that a pregnant woman asked for instead of coffee (meanwhile soft drinks and coffee were included) i considered this extremely petty, among other charges. He immediately got defensive and did not address me in a professional manner. I told him that i did not appreciate his attitude and that i may not consider returning to the restaurant. To this he responded, "Well if you're not coming back then why should i continue to talk to you." And through the bill back at me. I was left speechless!!! This is how customers are treated (especially one who brought in such a large party and spending approx $1500)!?! I was utterly disgusted, reduced my payment by what i thought i should not be responsible for ($100) and stormed out. The next day i realized that i forgot to ask for my deposit credited back to me (a $100 deposit is required to make a reservation at Ottavio restaurants). When i called the manager the next day he said it would not be returned since i reduced my payment. This is ridiculous because the deposit is a completely separate affair and the Ottavio policy states that it will not be refunded only in situations where the number of people reserved for and that actually show up differ by more than 25%, which was not the case with my party. They are keeping my deposit hostage!!! I can't believe the unbelievable poor customer service i have experienced with the managers at Ottavio Laval. I, along with my 46 family members and friends, will DEFINITELY NEVER RETURN and i recommend that you don't either!!! read more
