No shade to older people, but we were with our 18 and 20 year old kids and the vibe was kinda vanilla. We were pretty hungry so decided to give it a go. Firstly, we are from Ontario and are not fluent in French. We will make the effort to do our best but usually the servers will just speak English, which we appreciate! Our server this day was just not the friendliest. She seemed annoyed with us from the get go. Whether it was our subpar attempt at speaking French or not, who knows. Definitely couldn't have been a reflection of our attitudes as we always go out of our way to be super respectful of people in the service industry as we have all worked in it in some capacity. The place was not very busy so it's not like she was slammed with orders. She took our order and then disappeared for 45 minutes lol. People were being served all around us but it seemed as though we had been forgotten. Our order was not complicated (2 Greek salads, and two chicken skewer plates). When our meal finally arrived, I was honestly shocked. The "village Greek salad" or however they called it was just tasteless. Huge pieces of pepper, huge pieces of tomato, some cucumber, minuscule feta and a few olives tossed in for good measure and the most pathetic gathering of lettuce underneath it all. Barely any oil, zero vinegar. It was just laughable. Server was nowhere to be seen so I couldn't ask for some extra oil and vinegar. Not once did she come by to see how we were doing or ask if we needed anything. Just couldn't be bothered, I guess. The chicken skewer platters were tasty enough but definitely nothing to write home about. We won't be returning on future visits to Montreal. The outside patio is cute but that was the only positive about our experience. Even trying to pay was a huge hassle as the server had seemingly disappeared and we waited for almost ten minutes until she showed her face. When she printed the bill, made an "are you stupid?" face as she was standing a bit further away from me and basically called me over like I was a dog. We still tipped her (15% instead of our usual of 22%) (my kids are extremely unhappy that I tipped at all) but we will never recommend this place to friends or family coming in from out of town. We visit Montreal quite a lot and frequent a lot of places but this is one that you can absolutely skip.

More Montreal (1 of 2)…read more I told a good friend of mine they needed to visit Montreal. They did and are still thanking me. This person hails from the United States, but has lived in different countries. In turn, I was told to go eat at Maison Grecque. On a humid summer day, I did just that. Maison Grecque sits on Avenue Duluth, where it feels like a blend zone between Centre-Ville and where the Plateau feels too earthy crunchy. Avenue Duluth has been known to house various Greek options and this is certainly one of the better ones. They run a table d'hote with lunch pricing all the way until 4 p.m. I barely I made it in there and the server told me that he had to place the order very quickly so their computer would hold the price. I ordered a combination platter with two skewers of chicken souvlaki, potatoes, salad, and rice. It was preceded by a bowl of avgolemono soup. It was a generously sized platter and more Greek restaurants should imitate its proportions. With it came a dessert and, while I don't remember if I had a choice, it was a small piece of baklava. I had a cup of drip house coffee with which to wash it all down. It was a very good meal; that is, if you like casual and robust Greek cuisine. Of the many area restaurants which end with the word "Grecque," this is the most worthy of that label. If I was in the mood for Greek food, I would definitely go back. Most of the time I am. A few rare times I'm not. There was a weird mix up with the order being so close to the end of the table d'hote period. The server caught it and did a quick slight of hand to fix it. The guy sitting across the arched low wall from me noticed it and laughed. Without going into much detail, it wasn't something you see every day. The server was humorous. Unlike other places in the world I visit, I really appreciate being perceived as a local here ... at least initially. I was happy with the table d'hote's pricing. The restaurant has a cozy interior that is sort of rustic. Take note that, for when the weather is cooperating, they also have a large exterior garden seating area. Since I was told to eat here, and it turned out to be a positive experience, I thought I would pass this on to readers of reviews. Maison Grecque on Avenue Duluth is one of the better casual Greek restaurants at which I've eaten in the Montreal area.

We definitely got our money's worth and had a great time. We love that we were able to support a local family own restaurant that has been around for 45 years. We hope to see that they will be around for many more years to come.

Bernard street was closed when we went so the tables are able to be well spaced out. My only issue was if it were the rain the tables were not covered. Thankfully the clouds cleared up for us and we were able to enjoy our dinner outside. I love a restaurant that specializes in one thing. Some people were upset there was no pizza on the menu but there were enough options to please everyone (seafood lovers, meat lovers, vegetarians). They offer some cocktails and wine but the list was not very long. I ordered the sausage and rapini pasta and was very pleased and stuffed. Dessert looked great and I would have loved to taste the tiramisu but was way too full.

Let me tell you a little story about a little restaurant that could. It's a little restaurant…read morecalled Le Saint-Jacques. This little restaurant has been operating for about for years. My girlfriend spotted this little restaurant hidden from any main Street. One of those little restaurants that you drive by and blink and you missed it. And that's ok because this little restaurant is filled with regulars only, where the owner calls you by name, pats you on the shoulder and treats you like family. This little restaurant has nothing hip or trendy, you don't get served by strippers or hipsters with oily beards and man buns, they don't play loud music and you don't have to scream your conversation. No it's a quaint family owned restaurant, with a charming homey décor that seats 30, maybe 35 guests, tops where you get served by the owners, the chef is the owner's daughter, assisted by her husband. This little restaurant has a menu that lets face it doesn't reinvent the wheel, straight up Italian and French cuisine (trust me it works) but as with all meals, it's all in the execution and boy does this little restaurant execute well. The menu is simple and short. This is good. It leaves more room for quality. The opening was a simple soup, a potage, a cream of carrots and ginger. Perfect balance between the sweet of the carrot and the spiciness and bitterness of the ginger. If this was a preview of things to come, we were in for a great meal. I could have eaten a bucket full of that soup. This was followed by this giant veal meatball served in this perfect tomato sauce that I licked up from the bowl with bread once I was done... the meatball was perfect melt in your mouth goodness, no weird spices or weird add-ins. All that topped with slivers of Parmigiano Regiano (hope I spelled that right). Seriously delicious. My girlfriend had fried shrimp wrapped in angel hair pasta served with a balsamic and maple syrup reduction. Looked awesome but I'm allergic to shellfish so I can't taste, but it was an eye crossing mind blowing experience for her. The owner then asks us if we want to get the main right away or wait. We took a break. But the owner brought us a complementary plate of bruschetta which were just perfect and non acidic and not too salty (common mistake) Then comes the main. I had duck confit served with roasted vegetables and this crazy ass potato mash that's so simple and yet so perfect. The roasted vegetables was equally delicious. I was expecting the duck to be super fatty because it was confit, but it was well balanced and the accompanying sauce was... it was.... I dunno what it was made of and I should have asked but it had this fruity taste that just married perfectly with the duck, I want to dare say it was cranberry but I'm not sure. All I know is that I was thrown for a curve. Perfectly prepared, fall off the bone, perfectly seasoned and very flavorful stuff. My girlfriend had the pistachio crusted rack of lamb and there's no describing how good that was. The chef really has a knack for cooking meats perfectly. And the accompanying sauce was disturbingly tasty. The meal was concluded with the classic tiramisu, often drenched in alcohol, but not here. Equilibrium was achieved. It was sided with fresh blueberries and caramel. POW! My girlfriend had a 3 chocolate layer cake that was very chocolaty but not over powered with sweetness. The owner even introduced us to regulars sitting next to us and we became momentary family. He gave us nicknames: Francesco and Angela. Our new family was friendly and even shared with us some of the shoestring fries which were freaking awesome. By the bucket please. Outstanding service. Mind blowing food. Subdued and welcoming atmosphere. So this obviously gets a 5 outta 5. We'll be going back and we'll bring more people.
