The best sushi in Zurich so far! Delicious, fresh fish and very friendly service. If you're pressed for time though, you might not find the experience as enjoyable as they take their time to prepare and serve the food. read more

The lunch special (bowl of miso, 3 nigiri, some futomaki, and some simple roll slices) was less impressive --- clearly the tail end of the day's prepped rolls, with the rice a little soft for my taste. The fish on the nigiri was still great, and the futomaki were fun (sprouts?), but the plain maki were pretty plain, and the white miso was more crunchy (onion perhaps?) and less flavorful than most of the versions I've tried. Barfüsser claims to be one of the oldest gay-friendly bars in the world ("oldest continually operated", perhaps?). I stopped by during the after-lunch lull for a little sushi --- fine time to try the fish, but it was fairly quiet and didn't get much of a feel for the denizens.

I had the most amazing duck salad I've ever had in my life, with a lemon lime vinaigrette fresh finish, a beautifully prepared perfectly cooked sea bass, accompanied with the perfect sides. I was so full but could not leave out the beautiful desert. Hato is on my top 5 list with Joel Robuchon, French Laundry, morimoto's and Alain Ducasse's worldwide places. Greatness all around...5 stars!!

I looked at the menu before going and was super excited but to be honest, the host was not very friendly at all. She gave my friend and I a look and apparently we were not up to her standards or maybe she is a snooty person? Our waiter had the same attitude at first, he did not give any explanation on the menu, except that he volunteered info that we could opt for a glass of wine instead of a bottle if we wanted to save some money (not kidding!). However, when the food arrived we were in heaven! All the dishes were AH-MAH-ZING. I honestly don't know what was the best: the Hamachi with yuzu & truffle was super delicious, the dressing complemented the fish instead of overpowering it. I was super hesitant about the eggplant nigiri sushi but my friend wanted it and it surprised me pleasantly. In addition, the sashimi was by far the best one I had in Switzerland. I also want to point out that the matcha chiffon cake was a big hit, even for people like me who are typically not big on desserts. I must also admit that our waiter seemed to mellow up once we ordered food and drinks, he was very happy to give us recommendations of Japanese whiskey to finish our meal and the manager gave us free shots to end the evening - so I guess the initial awkwardness disappeared. However, I still think that restaurants should be welcoming to everyone, regardless of how much they spend, hence, I am not giving it a full 5 star review. So this is a super high 4 star review, overall I had a great night at Hato, maybe 5 star is in their future because I will definitely revisit.

Ideal for a relaxed lunch or dinner, though best with a reservation due to its size. Pros: * Fresh, generously portioned sushi -- reviewers rave about "huge fish portions" and delicious, high-quality taste . * Top-notch ramen-- Tonkotsu and Tantanmen are consistently praised, with one reviewer noting the "delicious Tonkotsu & Tantamen Ramen, authentic flavors, carefully prepared fish, and friendly staff" . * Homemade gyoza and sauces--a highlight for many, "Hand made Gyoza. Even the sauce they serve is hand made" . * Warm, attentive service in a small, inviting space . * Great value for the quality, mid-range pricing around CHF30-40 per person . Cons: * Limited seating, as it's a cozy, compact restaurant--better reserve ahead. * Slightly on the pricier side for ramen or gyoza (~CHF10 for 4 pieces), though fans say it's worth it .

We ordered the sashimi mix, the hamachi carpaccio with ponzu, some marinated tofu and sake. We were told that they were out of hamachi so we choose the salmon carpaccio instead. The food was simply disappointing: the salmon carpaccio with shichimi sauce was not sliced thin at all. It looked like salmon sashimi with what looked like a bland black bean sauce. The sauce has not at all the spicy shichimi sauce I was expecting. The sashimi mix was even worse, it was simply sad. It consisted out of 6 slices of tuna and salmon sashimi of very low quality. I swear, I've had better sashimi at the supermarket. In addition, the waitress was rude, she was constantly chatting about on her phone in Mandarin and when we asked for a suggestion of another dish she just shrugged. I asked if they had Yakatori but she seemed to have no clue so we decided to go somewhere else to continue eating. Yes, we went to a second restaurant that evening, unfortunately that was after feeling hugely disappointed by Maki Haus and dropping 90 CHF. Not going again.

So, I booked a table at Yooji's but I ended up getting a spot in front of the conveyor belt. There's a Yooji's close to the hotel I was staying at but for some reason this particular location was highly recommended. Service was great. I grabbed plates and plates of sushi from the conveyor belt. Different pricing depending on the plate color. Each plate has a few pieces of sushi (2-4). The table in front of you will tell you the pricing as well as description of each plate when you place the plate on the circle on your right. The quality of fish was alright. Conveyor belt sushi is not meant to be top-quality sushi. I didn't like 2 things I tried: chicken teriyaki nigiri (chicken was dry and the texture was weird), and salmon sushi wrapped in rice paper with cilantro (it was like a Vietnamese sushi. Do you want pho sushi? I didn't finish it). The current conversion rate is 1USD = 1CHF. So with my 6.5 plates of food and a jasmine tea, it was 85+ CHF for 1 person. That's like the price of an omakase tasting menu but it's conveyor belt sushi! It's not a bad place, it's just not worth it. Skip!

In Switzerland, it's especially popular with lunch time shoppers, but I love it for the pleasant ambience, friendly staff and deliciously varied menu all of which are best experienced in evening. Sushi and Switzerland aren't normally two things that go hand in hand. For starters, the sea is a long way away. On top of that, prices of imported food are kept high to encourage eating local goods. With that context, and the 15 or so Japanese restaurants I've eaten at in Zurich - Sushi Shop is absolutely fantastic. My partner and I will be eating here for weeks yet.
