I'm from NYC so naturally I took it for granted that good inexpensive sushi is almost around every corner like dry cleaners. When I moved to Zurich two and a half months ago, I came face to face with the cold harsh reality that good sushi is not only hard to come by, but also very pricey.
I read some reviews about Yooji's and decided to give it a try (after holding out for nearly two months of no sushi). Since people say that the inside conveyor belt sushi is less than desirable, my husband and I opted to sit outside on a nice evening. The wait was a bit long, which was expected on a Friday evening. There was only one waiter servicing all the tables outside and the table next to us has 10+ ppl. I was slightly irritated that we sat at our table for 15 mins before the waiter came by only to realize that we never got menus. So another 20 mins elapsed after we decided on our orders and filled out the order forms when the waiter came back to collect it. But like I said, he was the only one covering the outdoor seating section so we didn't mind so much.
Eventually our orders came all together, the appetizer and the entrees. Wish we got our edamame first but we were pretty hungry by then so the more the merrier. I ordered 3 pieces of spicy shrimp and three pieces of rainbow inside out roll, a salmon chirashi, and a piece of kingfish nigiri. The fish were fresh and up to par, the salmon chirashi was especially delish. The spicy shrimp roll was a bit on the drier side but I juiced it up with the yummy and super potent wasabi. I was satisfied with my entire order. Ok, I went in with not so high expectation so as not to be disappointed. My husband was also happy with his chicken teriyaki bento (he's Swiss, not too adventurous on the food front).
I don't usually give 4*s easily but the waiter recommended a nice sake for me after asking what my preference is, which brings up my rating from 3.5* to a 4* :)
The bill for the whole meal was well under a hundred CHF with apps and drinks which was quite acceptable (considering where we are). I'll definitely be hitting up Yooji's again next time I need to come up for some (sushi) air. read more
