As soon as my tour guide told us the oldest restaurant in the world was in Madrid and we walked by…read moreit on the tour, I was determined to eat here.
It's absolutely crazy to me that they're still using the original firewood oven since the restaurant opened in 1725. That's almost 300 years!
My friend and I didn't have a reservation, so we got here around 12:45, 15 minutes before they opened for lunch, and tried to walk in. We were the second group in the walk in line, so we made it in. They reserve one indoor dining area plus the outdoor seats for walk in, so 6-7 groups got seated. It was a pretty easy process.
The decor inside matched its long history, and everything looked old school fancy.
I started with a glass of sangria for 3.75€.
For food, I had their specialty, the cuchinillo i.e. roast suckling pig, for 32€, and my friend had the roast chicken with veggies for 20€. I appreciated that their oven area is open, so you can peak your head in and watch them roast the pig. It's absolutely crazy how many roast pigs they have on the shelves... they must go through a ton of them everyday!
While I thought the dish was a bit on the pricy side, it absolutely lived up to its reputation. The skin was super crispy and the meat tender and flavorful. I really enjoyed this dish. The portion looked small, so I wasn't sure if it'd be enough to fill me up, but I was stuffed by the end of the meal and wasn't too hungry even by dinnertime.
My friend thought the roast chicken was just okay.
The table near us also got the roast baby lamb and said it was amazing as well, so hopefully I'll have the chance to come back and try that as well...
