Ok, folks, now I haven't been yet to every single dog park in Westchester County (a place where I grew up and just returned to and am stunned at how dog-unfriendly it can be) -- but I'm here to tell you that the Ossining Dog Park is WONDERFUL! I'm hoping to move back to Westchester for a job, and now with my dog in tow, and a big dog park fan, went in search of some good ones. I was getting discouraged until I found a website that lists all of Westchester's dog parks -- http://www.animal-link.org/parks.shtml -- and the one in Ossining looked interesting, so finally decided to try it out. I have been to dog parks in LA, SF, Vegas, and all over Central Florida and this is definitely in the Top 3. It is on the grounds of a very rustic park -- the dog park is way up the hill, set aside, secluded, amongst forest. It is very quiet, woodsy, peaceful, and whomever designed it really did so with dogs in mind (you'd be surprised at how many dog parks are just slapped together with no forethought whatsoever). It has those great wood chips on the ground, a doggie drinking fountain, plenty of poop bag stations, chairs, doggie "playground" items, a big boulder to climb on, and, very important to me, a sloping landscape, which is great for the dogs exercise-wise. And, not the least: not only are the dogs all great, all the people I met are wonderful, which is not always the case at these places. I heard this place is very popular -- one regular travels all the way from Eastchester! -- even in the winter. Thank you City Of Ossining and others for having the good judgment to have a great dog park. They "get it." A lot of cities, all they think of is the hassle of the dog park -- but GOOD dog parks bring people from all around, and many times that means bringing consumer dollars to the community. read more

This is a great dog park. It is very well maintained and it has a lot of poop bags. It has an open fenced in area, the location is very peaceful and fresh. It has a very safe fire pit. The parking is always full and there is a clean port-a-potty. I like how it has two gates so if a dog walks out there's another door, but I wish that some owners would close the gate before they open the other. It has many chairs and benches. My concerns are the tables should be higher. Last time I went there I saw a dog licking someone's coffee on the table. Then it took an empty plastic cup and rolled it around in the dirt and started to get all his doggie friends involved with the "roll toy". I also think the ground should be paved. I saw some dogs digging and damaging the grounds. The dogs will get dirty and some puppies are still learning not to eat dirt. My dog likes to go in the back of the shed and take out a plastic water bottle. I saw all kinds of cigarettes and plastic on the ground that could really hurt a dog. Some aggressive dogs come and have snarled at my dog and snapped at them, such as Tinker. There should be a sign to remind for no littering in the dog run and to make sure your dog is playing nicely with others. The small dog run should be more open. Usually the small dogs are in the big dog run because there isn't much action there. I get that the small dogs are quite little and that they need a smaller space and all, but it still needs room to play and tackle. I haven't really been seeing any owners not being responsible like they have in the other reviews, so it is good and bad. Overall, this dog run is spectacular and I highly recommend it, though there are small issues that can easily be fixed. read more

A one of a kind dog park in Westchester, as far as I know. It is located on top of a hill in Cedar Lane Park. There is a large fenced in area, with a separate section available for small dogs. The ground is covered with wood chips from local landscapers. There are lights that stay on until 8pm, and water lines are in the works. There is also a very clean (I am told) port-a-potty. Most of the regulars are pretty cool, responsible dog owners. I know far more of the dogs names than those of the humans that go with them. The recently elected part president is a great guy named John Girolamo, with beautiful Great Dane named Harley. We visit several times a week with our guy, Rocky. He's the one in my photo. read more

People don't take responsibilities for their dogs. They are more interested in socializing with other people that when their dog gets aggressive they don't notice it and then blame the dog that was being attacked. People that go there aren't always the most friendly in the world. I have seen an unacceptable number of unfixed dogs there. When you bring an unfixed male into a dog park with females, chances are there are going to be problems. People smoke cigarettes and flick the butts into the wood chips. I know there are a whole lot of dogs in this world that will eat anything. Can't imagine that's good for a dog. Its not that hard to walk 50 feet and flick your butt into the parking lot where dogs aren't. We have chosen to not bring our dog there anymore. Maybe the 4 times we went there we encountered something out of the ordinary, but from our experiences we will never bring our dog there or recommend the park to anyone. read more

Dog park is wonderful and pretty well maintained. I've been several times and will continue to return, but seek out the quieter times when there aren't as many people. Although everybody seems well intentioned, there is a distinct "Not my dog's fault" about any problems. I am extremely surprised at the breed discrimination. Regardless of which dog is aggressive, certain owners deny any responsibility and blame dogs who "look aggressive." I take the opposite tack, and understand that my dog isn't everybody's best friend. . .she gets along well with most dogs and people, but I remove her should she become overwhelmed. All I ask is that people follow the rules of the park and keep dogs leashed while outside the fenced area, keep the gates between areas closed, and the ratio of humans to dogs at a controllable rate. We have encountered several problems with specific people bringing more dogs than they can control and having dogs off leash outside the fenced area. Also, people should honor requests when asked specifically not to feed/pet other people's dogs. When we see certain dogs/people, we try to leave before they enter the park. These people continuously disregard protections designed to help dogs stay safe. That being said, there are some wonderful people and wonderful dogs who have helped my dog become more comfortable and happy over the past years. read more

Sadly I've made my last visit to this dog park. I moved here a couple of months ago, and at first I was very happy to find such a nicely setup dog park not far from my home. However, after twenty or so visits, I've witnessed so much aggressive dog behavior, and owners who can't be bothered to get up from their chairs to do anything about it, that I have to conclude that despite its beautiful setting this is not a safe place for dogs. Beth F. in her review hit the nail on the head. People come here to hang out, not to exercise or properly monitor their dogs. It seems their dog would have to be killed before they could be bothered to get up from their chairs. I was even approached by an individual who bellowed at me that "they" don't want tennis balls there, because this starts fights between dogs. Playing fetch is one of the best ways to get dogs exercise, and dogs that are properly trained and monitored don't fight over tennis balls. Clearly this odd and unfortunate individual (he had the bearing of a kind of comical, antiquated school yard bully) is a reflection of the ethos of this park: park your indolent self in a chair and ignore your dogs as much as possible. The result of this attitude is that this is a very unsafe place for dogs, and I encourage anyone who cares about the safety of their pets to avoid this place until something serious changes. read more

Two stars only because the small dog section is very small. When I went there the gate between the small & large sections was open, and about 4-5 big dogs (but only 1 owner) came running over which freaked out my tiny dog. Will continue to go to the dog park in White Plains instead. read more

The last two times I have been there my shy, submissive and reserved 10 month old was bullied by a particular dog. The owner is slow to react and take the appropriate action. Since I am very new there and he is a long standing attendee who others say is very responsive ( which I strongly disagree with), I am forced to stop going to this park. I recently adopted a 5 month old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix with tons of energy to burn. We've come to the park several times, it's well equipped with lots of shade options, water bowls and a water fountain for those hot summer days and always stocked with bags to clean up after your pet. Everyone here has been very friendly, however, my puppy is scared to DEATH to come here now because of a run in with a ball aggressive dog who almost managed to get his neck in a death grip. If you know your dog to be toy aggressive, please be MINDFUL when bringing him to a dog park (where there will be lots of balls and other dogs). There is a separate smaller area in the park where you can isolate your dog and his ball. As an owner of a dog who has shown aggression (my jerk Shiba mix, not my sweet innocent Catahoula puppy) I make sure to always take precautions...keeping him leashed at all times, keeping him in the smaller play area when other dogs are at the park, feeding him separate from other dogs, etc. It is important to know your dog and his quirks and be able to control them and if you can't...then a dog park is not for you, in fact, a dog is not for you. Everyone here has been very nice and talkative (I've had a few run ins with aggressive dogs, their owners were very apologetic and left promptly with their dogs) and well intentioned, just be aware and please educate yourself on dog behavior before going to a dog park, it will carry you far in the long run and possibly save the life of your best friend...or someone else's. read more

First the good - this is a great facility. Large fenced in spaces for both small and large dogs, ground covered with wood chips, plenty of poper bags and disposal cans, water fountain, chairs, picnic benches, trees inside the area for shade, a small firepit, animal toys and small play stations all around. There were about 20 dogs there, none were agressive and everyone played nice. Now the bad - when we went last week for the first time, there were two groups of obvious "regulars". One a group of five older men sitting in a circle talking about their weekend, jobs, etc. Another younger group talking and laughing at one of the picnic tables. The problem - no one was watching their dog. In the 45 min. we were there, two of their dogs pooped and they didn't notice and left it there for someone else to clean up (along with a couple of other poops that were already there). As a first timer, I did not feel comfortable calling them on it but we watch our dog constantly and even brought our own bag. But that's the kind of irresponsible behavior that gets people annoyed and dog parks shut down. read more

My husband and I brought our 10 month old, 60 pound, hyper, female pup, Layney, to this park yesterday and were very happy with the experience. The park itself had the usual dog park amenities (fence, separate sections for small and large dogs, waste stations with bags, water bowls and fountain) and is kept clean. This was Layney's first time to a dog park so we were all a little nervous. When we first went to bring her in, she was scared of all the dogs surrounding the door and started to act a little aggressive. Thankfully, the people already there were very nice and recommended that we bring her to the small dog side for her to get used to everything. After that, we let her in the original side and she had the best time of her life. She's very excitable and "in your face" but the other dogs were very nice to her and they all ran and played around the entire area together. The people that go there often were so pleasant and accepting as well. We will definitely be coming back! read more
