Garlic rolls and beer
Leah S.

After being super duper spoiled in Northern California with a veritable plethora of Papuserias to get incredible papusas, tacos, tamales, and platanos from, I found Connecticut to be void of my off taken for granted pleasure. I was venting this frustration to a friend, who told me that there was a pizza place in New London that also made tamales and papusas. Excited for what might be, we arrived on a rainy and overcast weekday, hungry and hopeful. Osminos is located just west of the Lawrence Memorial clinics, and just north of New London's two back to back roundabouts (which I think are ridiculous and cumbersome, but I'm told really help clear traffic in the area during commute hours). Parking is behind the diner, which is awkwardly in the middle of some scruffy looking housing areas. Interior is what you'd expect of a pizzeria hybrid El Salvadorian diner; a mishmash of the obligatory kitschy pizzeria stuff and Salvadorian touristy stuff. Menu is pretty detailed, with many various items to choose from. While we were there, we were the only people ordering from the El Salvadorian section, which maybe should have been our tip-off. I did the Tamal and Papusa combo, with a chicken tamal and three papusas: one bean and cheese, one veggie and cheese, and one pork. Darling man ordered the Chicarones with Yucca, and a latino beer which we both thought tasted like it was past its expiration date. While the food was being made, they brought us garlic bread rolls, which sadly were the best things we ate the entire time. Even so, the were overly salty and dry, despite the copious olive oil and garlic. My papusa plate came with curtido, which is a slightly fermented cabbage slaw, which I wished could make up its mind if it was sour, salty, or spicy, but ended up being not much of any. The papusas were over-cooked and bland, and the tamal had gristle and fat through it which turned me off. Husband's plate was massive and overwhelming, with the biggest hunks of fried pork I've ever seen, with equally giant yucca pieces, all covered with the indecisive slaw, and unimpressively bland salsa. The staff were pleasant and service was quick, but this place really does a disservice to the delight and deliciousness that El Salvador has to offer in regards to everything culinary. Prices are good, but with the El Salvadorian foods sstruggling to even be mediorcre, I'd hesitate to return even to try their grinders and pizza.

DO NOT ORDER PIZZA worst pizza I've ever had it was literally liquid on top of crust, the pasta was great but I wasted my money on the pizza, 20$ for this horseshit

Lots to pick from

I have been looking for any tasty places that are from the Hispanic culture. Coming from New York that is all I like too eat. This place has a very cozy feel (as if your in your grandmother house) Waitress was very attentive. Cooks were very nice and welcoming to people that want to get to know their culture eats. Which I found very thoughtful... I am a vegetarian and the cheese pupusas were a GO TO! And their morning beards are amazing!! It's like a little restaurant that locals know... I'm glad I stop by and I was completely stuffed w just 3 pupusas, food coma lol.

Seafood soup, carne asada & pupusaa! This food is INSANELY GOOD. Very authentic & made to order. Viva El Salvador! I HIGHLY recommend. Don't let the "pizza" in the name make you think it's only pizza. This is great Latin food

Pepperoni pizza is amazing. The buffalo soup is pretty great too. Reasonably priced. Would recommend for late night snack.

So this place looks divey inside and out but the food is delicious. I've been craving papusas and…read moredecided to try them. I got the chicken, pork and cheese, plain cheese and the loroco. They're served with a cabbage slaw, tomato sauce and some spicy pickled jalapeños and carrots. The slaw gives it a nice crunch and the tomato sauce is nice and sweet to counter the saltiness of the cheese. My favorite is probably the loroco, which reminds me of broccoli and cheese but different. The corn dough outside is nicely charred but soft on the inside. It's not dry at all, even with the chicken filling. I paid 6 bucks for all of that. I probably will definitely order take out again. It was very fast and the girl spoke fluent English. The prices on the steak plates seem reasonable so I may try that the next time. The decor is sort of sad but the food is bomb.

What a Deal Another…read moregem on Chalkstone Ave. Rincon is a typical Latino market that has a small kitchen in the back. It's someone's mom or grandmother cooking for you in the back. These are usually the best places. The place looks ruined down, but don't let it detract you. This place is good. The order was a typical carne asarda platter with a salad rice refried beans. I have to tell you it was delicious and for 9 bucks it could feed two, but I found myself eating the entire plate. Top it off with a nice passion fruit fresh juice and this was a great meal. If your in the mood for a home cooked meal for a great price give this joint a try. Thanks

There was no music, a sign for hot food but no hot food displayed, or smelled of hot food. I still wanted to give them a chance because of the previous reviews, and how hungry we were, so I still placed an order for birria nachos, yellow rice & pink beans, pernil, and tostones. Very happy I did because the food did not disappoint and made up for the lack of ambiance. The birria nachos are a must if you come here ! The pernil could've had a bit more salt but I wasn't mad at it at all. The nachos made up for everything, the flavor was blessing, added with the sauce ? The spicy dressing was favored the best on top of everything, even the tostones ! Over all I'd come back again, but for take out (lol). As for the service we had no complaints, it was fast! Thank you to the staff for how quick everything came out, and hot ! No one was rude, just a calm and quick service.
