Chorizo and egg breakfast burrito, no cheese. $3.50 Let's eat!

This is a 3.8 star review rounded down to 3.0. Oscar's has been on the north side of town for years, and have opened a new location on the south side. The food is always good, and they have great lunch specials. We stop here quite often when we're on the south side of town. Mike and I recently stopped in for breakfast tacos. Chorizo and egg is my taco of choice and it was delicious! The hot sauce is really good too. The breakfast tacos are also larger than La Popular, so that's a plus. So why the rounding down? They are now charging for chips and salsa. That's a big NO NO in the land of Mexican food. But with inflation the way it is, I do understand the reasoning. But it does mean we'll be going to restaurants where chips and salsa are free. Hopefully this will change, and we'll be back!

Finally gave Oscar's a try and it's a solid 2.5 in my honest opinion due to the food itself. The waitress was very sweet and the service was in good timing, but I found the food to be below average and unappetizing. The queso was basically the same as concession stand nacho cheese and combined with the salsa & chips it resembled the "Nacho Lunchables" I used to have at lunch as a kid. The cheese enchiladas are topped with the queso and the cheese inside was still shredded not fully melted. The tacos were alright. Beans had an off taste to them. I just honestly say this is not a place I'd recommend for food. Don't let the seemingly full parking lot of cars deceive you and convince you to finally give it a try. I hate leaving a negative review, but the food was edible just not good.

Fajitas dinners for 2 people. $50 that included delivery and tip.

We were so disappointed with these meals. We had order beef and chicken Fajitas. To started with the order was wrong. Very small portions rice and beans were fair favor . Beef fajitas had no flavor. No cheese for the fajita at all. Added Queso for $4. No favor no pepper very small just nasty. I am so disappointed had heard that they were really good from friends but this meal was nothing but gross. Won't Order again from them. Paid $25 a piece for the fajita. The bag of chips queso was so small omg. I know we need to be reasonable but 2 tortillas for our fajitas.

As a Google guide, the restaurant had a clean atmosphere but food needed improvement. Chips and salsa were cold and stale. They didn't even heat up the taco shells before placing unseasoned beef inside with some lettuce and a slice of roma tomato. The enchiladas they provided were cheese, covered with what looked like a cheese slice heated up to melt it. They charge $3 for a fountain drink, and no other adult beverages are on the menu, nor do they have anything on draft. After $17+ for the meal i still have my waitress a $5 tip. I don't need more $23 bad experiences.

Ever since Mary's Mexican closed down due to Covid, I have been trying out other small Mexican restaurants around Abilene to find one that could replace Mary's. If you are follower of my restaurant reviews or a subscriber to my YouTube channel (Jungle Explorer), you know that one of my complaints about Abilene is the lack of good true authentic Mexican cuisine, or any other foreign cuisines for that matter. The Abilene culture is just not one that is very accepting to new things or spicy food in general, so it is hard for an authentic cuisine restaurant to stay in business here. This was my first visit to Oscar's and it was a pleasant visit. I was greeted by the friendly staff at the door and seated right away. I open the menu and found your standard Texmex dishes that are common to all Texmex restaurants. You know, Tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc. I looked to see if they had a Molcajete dish, but they did not. I then looked for Caldo de Res, and that was also not on the menu. You know my rule, if you they don't serve Caldo de Res, they are not authentic Mexican. So, Oscar's is a Texmex restaurant, and that is how I am reviewing them, not for what they are not, but for what they are. As a Texmex restaurant, I would have to say that Oscar's is as good as any other in Abilene, better then some. Texmex is simple food and is hard to mess up, but there are some that find a way. Oscar's is not one of them. I had the Fajita combo plate and it was delicious. My wife had the Green Chili enchiladas and they were equally as good. My son had the tamale plate and loved it. The one thing that I really liked about Oscar's was how they brought the chips and salsa out. Most Texmex restaurants bring out a big basket of chips and a little bowl of salsa, which is gone after a few chips. At Oscar's they bring out a generous bottle of salsa and two bowls with the basket of chips. Oscar's is the first Texmex restaurant that I did not run out of salsa before the chips were gone. In fact, there was enough salsa to finish off an additional basket of chips. Oscar's gets a gold star for this feature only. The staff was very attentive and came by frequently to make sure we were happy with our food. They staff here seems to really care about their customers and want them to be happy. If I get a hankering for Texmex, I will certainly be back to Oscar's again.

Super busy on Sunday after church. Breakfast burritos weren't the best but ok. Good hot sauce.

We usually drive up Saturday so lunch in Coleman, TX. Once we're settled in at our usual hotel we start looking for evening snacks and drinks. We dined at TaMollys once but didn't like the lack of a full bar. That restaurant has since closed. The Buffalo Wild Wings at the mall was horrible. We also went to Outback Steakhouse because it's within walking distance. Good drinks but we're not here to eat sub par steak followed by the # 3 ranked Texas Monthly steakhouse in Texas. Checked everything within reasonable walking distance. This is where Garry's local knowledge helped dial in Casa Herrera. Our group waited a few minutes before being seated. Served by veteran server (20+ years at the restaurant) it was a very pleasant experience. Here's how the food went. My entree consisted of a giant pitcher of Patron Margarita which I hoarded. As for the rest of the cuisine the photos are posted here. OK, I did share a bit with my GF and nearby friends. I've also been asked to do the steak run twice a year. We're coming back!
