When in 2009, Nanaban opened I was jumping up and down with joy: a place which served ramen of the same quality of those in Japan, and only a short drive from my house! Fast forward to 2019, I no longer live in Belgium but in the meantime I've lived a few years in Asia, traveled to Japan several times and gourmet ramen are much more common. However, returning to Nanaban still makes my heart sing. Over the years the quality hasn't changed, they still serve perfectly cooked ramen with a great broth. Their tonkotsu ramen are one of the dishes which always manage make me happy, regardless of what happens. Seriously, their ramen are much better than many places which come highly recommended. If you need more proof: count the number of Japanese patrons while you are there! If you want to take a trip to Japan buy you cannot afford the airfare, go to Nanaban in Zaventem!

The restaurant has only a few tables and few spots at the bar, however, even though they are always full it never happened that we wouldn't find a spot. The staff is very friendly and always tries to accommodate everyone. There's also one communal table and a small terrace. During the week they are offering lunch menus for 13€ which includes a starter and a main. The starter in this case is half the size of a normal starter but the menu is still a good value for the money. As they tend to get very busy during the lunch times I'd recommend making a reservation if you're more than 2 people. I might say I tried most of their menu and after trying it I decided to stick to my favorites - the starters. There are a few great mains like the grilled salmon (Shake Teppanyaki) which is very juicy, marinated just the right amount and seared very shortly, or the seared beef steak (Suteki Teppanyaki). Both dishes come with rice and a salad on the side. However, the other mains I found a bit dull. This is also the reason I'm giving them a 4 star and not a 5. But the reason I keep coming back are the starters, their Sushi's and Maki's. My all time favorites are: - Gyoza which are stuffed with chicken and Japanese vegetables. The down side is that they provide only the so sauce (sweet or salty) but not the gyoza sauce. - Chikin Nagetto which are pieces of the chicken tighs breaded in sweet and a bit sour mix. The meat is not dry at all, on the contrary very juicy. - The salmon salad (Shake no Sarada) is the version of the grilled salmon but smaller then a main and with more salad (no rice). - Nikko California roll which have the salmon and fresh cheese on the inside and very thin layer of avocado and salmon on the outside layer topped with fish eggs. They have authentic sushi where the chef has to prepare and age fish to draw out peak flavor and I can honestly say that the chef here knows his ingredients.
