YUM. Will return!! I always over eat at sushi places so I had two rolls, chicken teriyaki, and the fried rice (I took most of it home, please don't judge! ) but it was all phenomenal. I don't know how I had never been here but it's my new favorite spot in Columbia for sushi. It's also more reasonably priced unlike some other sushi spots in town. Osaka is a shining star of Columbia, MO. I was born and raised here, but moved to Chicago about 10 years ago. I haven't found a place yet that can compete with Osaka! The sushi is great, Jenny and her husband are so lovely, and they always remember your name. It could have been a year since I was last in, and she remembers I moved to Chicago and asks me all about it. They'll make pretty much anything you ask (sushi rolls that aren't on the menu, etc.), and their entrees are all delicious. Recently (OK probably like 5 years ago) they added a Japanese Steakhouse side. Dinner and a show! I love it. I have to go at least once every time I'm back home for a visit. I don't know how they manage, but the fish is always fresh. I have to say, as good as it is, I'm clearly biased because they are such lovely people. BUT, and on this I am not exaggerating at all, their ginger salad dressing is by far the best I have ever had in my life. I want to DRINK it. I want to bottle it and sell it and retire to Tahiti on my billions. It's the nectar of the gods. read more

When I lived in Columbia this was truly my favorite restaurant in town. You can dine on a selection of sushi, soba/udon, etc. or you can have a hibachi experience (they cook it right in front of you.) The staff at Osaka are wonderful, especially Jenny, the owner. She's always so pleasant and remembers me when I visit from San Francisco. Furthermore, The decor and atmosphere is very relaxing. You can rest assured that you will have a wonderful experience here. Once the best sushi, tempura and noodles in town, then the owners left. The new owners are struggling with service and staff because of covid. The food is still very good, but service is shaky. Owners and wait staff do not speak English as a first language so be patient. The ginger salad dressing is outstanding--many people purchase a foam cup of dressing to take home. The reviews of take out meals are overly negative--face it, any food in a foam box is poor and Japanese food does not travel well. read more

This is good sushi...for Columbia, MO. The decor and ambience are both great, they seem authentic. This place also has a banquet room you can rent for free, so I have attended some awesome celebrations in said room. I believe they have karaoke in there as well. One problem is the place smells a little fishy, which is, believe or not, a bad sign for a sushi place. THe nigiri roll was enormous, not bite-sized like it's supposed to be. This restaurant is tucked away in Nifong. I came in late (around 9) to get some sushi. The waiting staff were all extremely friendly and helpful when it came to descriptions about menu items. The food was brought out pretty quickly, although this was probably because it was late and there weren't many people there. We ordered a total of around 50 or so pieces and it was prepared and brought out to us in about 15 or so minutes, which we appreciated. The rolls are pretty good. They weren't as fresh as I would have liked, but again, this may have been because we came in late. Everything tasted very good overall. They also give you warm towels to clean your hands before you eat, which is a really nice little gesture. Overall, I'd recommend this to people looking for pretty good sushi at a reasonable price. read more

St. Louis has a much better selection. The texture was off, it was too salty, and it was also far too hot temperature wise-- sushi, even with tempura, shouldn't be hot. Warm, maybe. But not hot hot. On the other hand, I think the quality of the fish is fine. But for $15-$20/special roll, I wanted the taste and texture to be there, too. read more

This place popped my sushi cherry. I was very scared trying sushi, as I worked in a seafood restaurant many years. Being from Brazito, Missouri, you don't see sushi places often. However, I was a brave man and went on a Monday night only to find they are closed Mondays... it was fate. But we returned and sat. Our server was eager to help the young, "happy" college students find the food that was right for them. I've had ginger before, but never wasabi, so I stuck a nice clump on the end of the chopstick and put it on my tongue. I'm surprised I still eat the stuff after that. Everything was always fresh, the service was always great and they found me a Saki I still drink today: unfiltered. Very cheap in Japantown. I will always owe a lot to this place, as it opened my eyes for food. read more

I guess I'm a coastal snob, but while the decor, staff and service at Osaka were all good, I found the sushi to be somewhat lacking. Maybe it was the fact that the nigiri sushi's rice was not packed hard enough and crumbled when I picked it up. Maybe the issue was that the magoro on top had ragged edges... Nope, the main issue to me was the ICE CRYSTALS in the fish. Now, I know that the fish had to be frozen to get to Columbia, but couldn't they have thawed it out before serving? The rest of the menu was fine, but I was so put off by the sushi that I barely noticed the rest. My friends who took me here were disappointed as well. read more

If you come to eat here know that the food tastes very good but if you are looking for the entertainment that typically comes with part of a Japanese Steakhouse you will sadly be disappointed. Our chef was very nice don't get me wrong but none of the typical entertainment that we are used to from other establishments occurred. The sushi rice doesn't taste like anything, the pictures of their rolls online are misleading. I ordered a (!!!!!!)$16 rainbow roll that was pictured online with avocado and cucumber; the things a rainbow roll is supposed to have. Had the in-laws in town visiting and we brought them here for dinner on their last night for hibachi. Service was very good and the food was really good. Our chef was friendly and put on a good show for us. Made a couple mistakes when trying to toss food and utensils but nothing that ruined the evening for us. Pricing was very reasonable and so were the portions. I think we've gotten more food at other places but prices were also a bit higher. We all got combo plates with a mix of filets, seafood, and steak, and even with the sake and beers we drank, the bill was about $25 per person and well worth it. Kind of a weird location so I don't think you'd come across this place unless you were looking for it, but it's definitely worth checking out. read more

I really like this place for sushi. It's really simple inside, nothing fancy, but the staff is super helpful and nice. The appetizers are really good, and the sushi is surprisingly good for this part of the country. Again, simple, not too done-up, but perfectly good that way. The caterpillar roll was awesome. Service was wonderful but not to impressed with my sushi. I chose the Barbie roll (a new addition to the menu) & the shrimp tempura. The Barbie roll had spicy tuna in it, which I was not impressed with. The shrimp tempura tasted more like beer battered fried shrimp. Again, this left me not impressed. My girlfriend and I went tonight and got 3 sushi rolls along with soup and side salads for each of us...the dressing was so good on the side salads that my girlfriend LITERALLY licked her plate clean! I was a little reserved when I came here since it is in a strip mall. My reservations were instantly nullified though. My server was amazing right off the bat. All the staff was great actually. The food was delicious. We had baby octopus to start off with, which we had never had. It was pretty good. Then the sushi came out. We were more than satisfied! We cleared our plate in no time! The small details were what was really cool. The hot towels and the spicy bean salad were great, just adding that little bit of authenticity. We will definitely be returning soon. read more

Tried Osaka for the first, and unfortunately last time. My husband and I had a good amount of food ordered, and delivered, what we received was disappointing. I spent upwards of $70 on 2 meal's, 2 appetizers, and a large order of pork ramen. I would think this would be more than enough food for 2 people! Not even close. Portions seem very small for the price, this wouldn't even have been an issue had the food been at least average. I rarely leave negative reviews, but we love Japanese food, and this was my worst experience ever. This didn't resemble anything close, aside from the shu mai, I wasn't happy with anything. My husband ordered the teriyaki chicken and it was the smallest chicken breast I have ever seen. If you decide to try it I would suggest eating at the actual establishment, that way you can see what you are getting before you pay! read more
