Dr. Kim was extremely rude and unprofessional. I've asked if she can elevate my head so I can breathe easier while work is being done. Her respond was I cannot work on your mouth, other dentist or medical professionals always accommodated me. Then less than a minute, after applying the numbing gel the injection was done, which was extremely painful. Dr. Kim stated that " if you are going to be like this, I guess you do not want me to inject the lower side of your mouth"! Once she started the work, I almost chocked, because my head was flat, started to cough, and I was extremely uncomfortable. Dr. Kim walked out without saying a word or say Are you ok? All of sudden her dental hygienist walked to the room to complete her work. Is this how patient should be treated? Even though the dental hygienist is extremely professional and nice, I will not be going back to Dr. Kim practice. read more

My very first visit upon moving to Alexandria was very pleasant and professional. We discovered them since they had great reviews, were local to our neighborhood, and took the Metlife Federal Dental Plan. After a friendly interaction with Madeliene to make an appointment, I was again given a friendly greeting by her at the reception desk and asked to complete a small amount of obligatory paperwork. I was almost immediately ushered into my clinical room for an easy and pain free teeth cleaning by expert hygienist Jin. Once complete, Dr. Stella Kim came and inspected my teeth and all was well. I had been coming to this practice for about 6 years before it transitioned to Dr. Kim. I was very impressed with the hygienist here - while in the past under the previous ownership, my cleanings were more pleasant, it was because they weren't actually cleaning very thoroughly. So I appreciated the attention to detail she had in scraping out what must have been years worth of plaque- definitely not the most comfortable experience (how could it possibly be when you're a trifling person in general who never flosses) but not at all painful and she was extremely considerate throughout. and the dental health Ed she gave me regarding flossing/brushing was very informative and useful. Definitely the most knowledgeable person to clean my teeth who I have ever met. Dr. Kim I can tell is analytical and wants to understand underlying causes of issues. For the person who complained about upcharging, the dental industry is competitive especially in old town. I don't feel i was swindled on anything. The recommendations made were quite reasonable and a business is a business. You get what you pay for. The front desk staff was also super cordial. read more

Dr Kim was great, but the rest of the experience here was upsetting. The dental hygienist told me the doctor was going to want to take out all my wisdom teeth because they had "lots of dark spots"... but when I asked Dr Kim about it she just looked surprised and said there's no need to take them out. Awesome! So why did your hygienist tell me the opposite? Then, when I told them I was going to have my cavity filled at another dentist because Oronoco doesn't offer nitrous oxide, the receptionist tried to tell me I should suck it up and do it without nitrous oxide because needles aren't a big deal. Cool cool, I'll just get over my irrational phobia of needles real quick, great suggestion! Why didn't I think of that. And finally, getting them to send me my xrays -- my own medical records -- was a hassle and a half. I went here nearly a year ago and I'm still mad about it. Had a procedure for my gum cavities and this was almost a month ago - my gums are still sour , tender, inflamed and swollen and it's so painful to try to eat on my right side where the treatment was done. read more

I had a tooth extraction due to a chipped tooth. Dr. Kim was very gentle and I felt almost no pain during the procedure even though I was very anxious from past experiences but she was not like any dentist I've been to. She even took some X rays and warned me about future problems. Very gentle and very nice. Would've definitely recommend if you are looking for a pain free dental experience. read more

Just had to sit through a long session (3 hours) to prep two molars for crowns (one lower and the opposing upper). While it isn't something I'd like on my calendar every week Dr. Kim and her staff made it a positive experience. I had been shown pictures of the teeth in question on my last cleaning visit, so saw the condition they were in and why she was recommending the crowns be done Now. I was having an issue with my sinuses which wasn't bothering me while standing up but once laying back in the chair I had moments where I became very uncomfortable and found it hard to breath. It was arranged by Dr. Kim before we started that if, at any time, I needed a break all I had to do was raise my hand. She was so kind, attentive and patient with the multiple times I needed a few seconds breather while she worked on the lower molar. The upper one went much more quickly - no breaks required. I have a small mouth and have had some very uncomfortable experiences in the past but Dr. Kim was great. She is careful, professional and has a very gentle touch. I'm excited to go back in two weeks to get my permanent crowns. I'm sure they'll fit perfectly and look great. As someone who spent nine years working in several different dental practices I truly appreciate Dr. Kim and her staff. read more

Dr. Kim and her team are awesome! I have had some traumatic dental experiences in the past and have always been very nervous/anxious/fearful of anything dental related. Dr. Kim and her team listened to all my concerns and took my fear seriously (prior dentists did not). Dr. Kim always takes every measure to make sure I am as relaxed as can be. I have been with her for almost a year now and I won't be leaving anytime soon. Dr. Kim looks at the big picture and the root cause(s) of any issues you may have. She takes the time to sit with her patients to provide her game plan and the reasons why. She also does not offer unnecessary treatment. I had a cavity that she could have reccommended to be filled immediately but instead she recommended we monitor it because it was small enough to be left alone for the time being. Dr. Kim makes time for her patients and is easily reachable. Also, the billing system actually makes sense and I have always been provided clear answers. PS. She brings in delicious homemade treats for her patients - if everything else in my review wasn't enough to help you make your decision. read more

My family have been Doctor Hanna's patient for a long time. Since he retired we continued to go to Dr. Stella Kim. We were a little worry since my son is disable and difficult to adjust to new doctor. Very fortunate Dr. Kim has been wonderful and the transition was smooth. My problem is with their billing system, trying to understand why I am always charged more that the insurance statement. I have called them and the explanation was vague, even suggest that it was balance owed from Dr. Hanna two years ago. I am not too happy, lets hope this will resolve soon. I have to look closely to my charges from now on. read more

I was previously a patient of Dr. Peter Hanna, and was sorry that he retired. But since taking over the practice from Dr. Hanna, Dr. Kim has updated the office and waiting room areas nicely, along with adding a more robust website. I have also been impressed with the professionalism (and friendliness) of all staff members. Most recently, I have seen Dr. Kim for a crown replacement and had a very positive experience with her and her staff. read more

My experience with Dr. Kim occurred shortly after she took over Dr. Hanna Jr.'s practice. Prior to going back to the chair for a long-scheduled cleaning and exam, one of the front desk ladies came out to ask me about my dental insurance information. Shortly after I got into the chair, the dental technician noted my records, saw that I also was receiving dental care from a periodontist, and then told me that I could come to her instead because she soon would be certified to measure the pockets between my teeth and the gum line. On the way out, I was informed that that my dental insurance benefit was exhausted and that I would have to pay out-of-pocket for Dr. Kim to fill the small cavity that she noticed during my exam. I appreciated the information and was relieved that the out-of-pocked cost was relatively affordable. Ultimately, I returned to have Dr. Kim fill the cavity, which was performed efficiently. All in all a good experience; nevertheless, it is difficult to shake the impression that the prime objective in the office is to drum up business. read more
