The dining room was filled with people eating quickly so they could head down the street to the opera. We sat on the two chairs on the sidewalk in front of the window. We slowly drank a glass each of Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva whole we watched the well dressed Veronese head to the opera. Great people watching and great wine -- the best we drank in Italy. If we had had another night in Verona we would have returned for dinner. BTW L'Orologio means "the clock." The restaurant is located by the clock in the city walls, hence the name. Did I mention how wonderful the Amarone is? Deep, rich, complex red wine from Veneto.

He then told Enzo to take care of his "new" friends. We decided that an offer like that can't be missed so we went there for lunch the nest day. My friend decided to give Enzo our go-ahead to bring out whatever he thought would put a smile on our faces. As you can see from the photo I posted, Enzo was table-side a lot, asking about preferences and potential allergies. We were treated to course after course of great, locally-sourced dishes, every one would be a signature dish for eateries over here in the USA. For example, he sprinkled Parmesan cheese on our risotto (etherial!) and added "aged thirty six months" - and it was rich, creamy and memorable. This small place deserves your attention and a high rating from anyone who understands what it takes to run a memorable restaurant that delivers quality, fair-priced food. In Maranello, the debate is always - Cavallino or Montana - the two most famous restaurants in town. Each has their fans - especially given their Ferrari-centered reputation (Ferrari big-wigs have a private dining room in Cavallino, F1 drivers have memorabilia all over the walls in Montana). This hidden gem has been one of the "bassa" most famous spots since the 60s, according to the very friendly staff. The wine list is one of the top three I've seen in the area, especially because of its alternative choices, mainly from Piemonte and Friuli. When I travel to Northern Italy, I have no doubt. He and his sous chefs Jacob and Michael are true professionals. Lucca was able to adapt to our kitchen without missing a beat. For the cooking class, he taught us how to prepare: fresh pesto, handmade pasta (tagliatelle), branzzino, calamari, bruschetta, mussels and clams, and a beautiful chocolate cake. For the private dinner, he prepared: smoked tuna, octopus salad, seared fish and tiramisu. We also ate at their restaurant which was homely and very local. The menu is not in English, a good sign! Both were delicious, simple, homestyle italian cooking with very fresh ingredients. It was the perfect first lunch on our vacation. The atmosphere is so relaxing. The menu is very limited and English isn't really spoken, but we were able to order lunch and wine. The atmosphere is terrific! Opera was playing in the background (probably Verdi?). For the main dishes we had pasta stuffed with ricotta cheese and lemon, with a Parmesan cheese sauce, and lamb shank with mashed potatoes. The pasta was spot on with a light lemony flavor, the lamb was tensor and succulent. Not to be forgotten was the red wine. We chose a bottle of Barbaresco that was smooth with great legs. They brought cured meat with cheese on the house while I was waiting for the food. The dishes came out not so long after. Octopus was cooked right about of time, it was very tender. I enjoyed the pasta very much. All the dishes tasted so well that I want to order some more but I was full. This is my go to restaurant if I come to Varenna again. Highly recommended
